Scott Leykam gives us an update on UP sports and when they might be played...

From a basketball fan perspective, it would seem if fans are allowed to watch the games in-person at all, there will likely be no more than 480 fans allowed for any one game unless the state and county are able to change the rules due to a drop in COVID numbers. Soccer will also be limited to about 480 if there is no change.

(Hmm, do you suppose there will be more Pilots fans than Zag fans at the GU @ UP game for a change?) Razz

About as thorough of a WCC preview as you're going to find. Yeah it says JoJo is returning but the only place I saw his departure announced was on Verbal Commits so I'll give the guy a pass on that one.

Credit to those guys, I left them a tip in the comment section and they had it fixed within a half hour.

Defensively, the influx of more depth and athleticism should hopefully boost the transition defense, which struggled mightily: according to Hoop-Math, opponents took 26.7% of their shots in the first 10 seconds of the shot clock, a top-20 rate in the country. Those high-value opportunities can sink a defense, and the fix is largely effort-based. Very interesting reading, especially about UP, he looks to have marked them harshly,and i dont think he has taken into account the recruits especially Aussie Zach Triplett, reading other college player write ups and trying to compare, he has missed the boat. If you compare Alex Ducas St marys,( really good aussie kid, he is a gun ) Stats,and going into his Sophomore year compared to Zach at the Australian Championships, Zach is going under the radar, big time and brings a real shooter to UP

Zach played 2019 as a under ager vs Alex

i have attached the stats breakdown below, but as you can see, they stack up, Zach also plays for Victoria which are full of studs, so would take a lot less shots than the other states, the WCC is getting a few Aussies now, its not just St Marys, with Kelli Lepaupe, Josh Kunan, and now Zach, going to be great to watch

Well, to be real I don't think there's any other way to mark the Pilots other than harshly. "Bad" is the only way to describe them for four years under Coach Porter, and not only have they been bad they only return 8.3% of their minutes played from last season (which should rank around 350th out of the 357 D1 teams).

Obviously I hope they're all wrong, but the Pilots will be ranked 10th in every single college hoops preview and the preseason coaches poll. It's just the way it's gotta be right now.

Zac's numbers from those two sources say that 75% of his FGAs were 3FGAs. The Pilots had a guy by the name of D'Marques Tyson a few years back that played a similar three-point specialist role. I'm sure the coaching staff would be thrilled if Zac ended up contributing close to what D'Marques did over his four years with the Pilots.

The Emerald Coast Classic was cancelled today, leaving Oregon without an MTE. Oregon State's MTE, the Cayman Islands Classic, was cancelled last week. Washington never had an MTE scheduled in the first place.

I wonder if the Pilots will end up playing one or more of the close P12 teams for the first time in a long time just because of the different circumstances this year.

The cancelation of so many multi-team events (MTEs) is creating havoc for schedulers, but the NCAA has opted NOT to issue blanket waivers so that all schools can play 27 games even if their MTE was canceled.

Instead:

NCAA D-1 Men's and Women's Oversight Committee wrote:In men’s basketball, teams can compete in a maximum of 25 regular-season games if a team does not participate in a multiple-team event; 25 regular-season games and one multiple-team event that includes up to two games; or 24 regular-season games and one multiple-team event that includes up to three games.

In women’s basketball, teams can compete in a maximum of 25 regular-season games if a team does not compete in a multiple-team event or 23 regular-season games and one multiple-team event that includes up to four games.

This could hamper the chances of UP playing one or more of the Pac-12 schools that are looking to help their RPI, but UO Women's Head Coach Kelly Graves says he wants his team to play UP and PSU in Portland. Still no word if it will happen.

The PILOTS CLASSIC is still on for now, apparently? Based upon what I am reading, schools are renegotiating their "buy games" down from the original agreed upon figure anywhere from $15K to $50K.

Schools used to wait around to get the highest guarantee they could, but now it's just not that way.

I'd be surprised if VMI is going to get the entire $85,000 from UP, but more power to them if they do.

I'm hearing the one school that is currently "problematic" for the Pilots Classic is Cal Poly because of state of California imposed travel restrictions.

The WCC has released the schedule for the coming season, but it does not give the time or location of the games.

(I have heard that some games may be played in a bubble with up to four teams competing in each bubble, but at this point that is just speculation.)

I spoke with a Montana State staffer this morning who told me he expected their game at Portland to be played just before Christmas.

And in a sign of the times, he also told me MSU will not be selling season tickets, but will instead sell single-game tickets on a weekly basis...when and if fans are allowed to attend games.

I believe the Pilots men's non-conference schedule is complete (although you'd never know it by the lack of roster and schedule information coming from UP), but if not, playing OSU might be a possibility …

Pandemic has Oregon State scrambling to find men’s basketball non-conference games:

In filling out the non-conference schedule, Oregon State coach Wayne Tinkle said the main issues are compensation and travel.

Some potential opponents are told by their school administrations they can only travel by bus to non-conference games. Other smaller schools and mid-majors are looking for something close to their usual cut for a non-conference game, which during normal times ranges from $75,000 to $125,000, depending on travel. But with the likelihood of no paying fans at non-conference games, compensation has plummeted.

Of the four remaining non-conference games, Northwest schools such as Portland State, Portland, Seattle University and Eastern Washington figure as possibilities for travel reasons.

- theoretically, Griffith and Seymour as jr transfers should be ahead of the freshmen and vying for decent minutes w/the older players; anyone know how these guys are doing in practice?
- gut says that the freshmen won't be ready for real minutes but hope I'm wrong...no downside to playing them...lets go "Triple"et and Curtiss.

It was mentioned in an earlier post that the WCC was considering going the bubble route much like the NBA...but that idea was later dismissed by some due to the expense of keeping 20 teams in Las Vegas for up to six weeks, but now the idea of playing in Las Vegas is apparently back on the table.

A quick check of the State of Oregon website actually shows that Multnomah was just added to Lane, Umatilla, and Malheur counties on the watch list. Benton is no longer on the list.

Not good for UP or PSU, but your point is made!
