The commentator said something about being late. Initially thought it might have been some documentation submitted late, but that wouldnt normally be within the time of the game and penaltied in-game. Another parent at the game suggested they thought it was related to the girls normal pre-game huddle chant. Ridiculous if they ruled that doing that delayed the game start or pregame routines or something. Not sure on NCAA penalty, but here under FIBA it would be only 1 shot.

I had the good fortune of joining a fraternity brother (yes, UP once had fraternities and sororities) and the entire women's team and coaches for a pasta party on Friday night and then again for the Pepperdine game on New Year's Eve.

The administrative technical, that I have never seen called before, was because the UP staff did not have the starting lineup turned into the official scorer by the 10-minutes before tipoff deadline.

Perhaps one of the reasons the technical was assessed was because the WCC's Supervisor of Officials was in attendance.  I talked to her about many things but forgot to ask about 1 shot vs. 2, thinking at the time it seemed strange that PU was given 2 shots.

Pepperdine has added 2 grad-transfers this year, a point guard and a post, and both have really elevated the Waves team.  After PU had scored 24 points in the first quarter, the Pilots were reeling a bit, but eventually chipped away and made runs after being down 12 points at one time.

Counting the two Upsilon brothers and family members, I think Pilot fans may have outnumbered PU fans on a very rainy New Year's Eve in Malibu and throughout California.

Next: Come out to the Chiles Center and see the UP women take on Santa Clara on Thursday at 6pm, and USF on Saturday at 5pm.

Here is from the ncaa basketball rules book for any administrative fouls, including not having the roster listed. Administrative fouls are one shot total for all the administrative fouls at the start of the game.

From page 97 of the 2022-2023 men’s rules book ( page 100 of the pdf)

(Art. 1) One administrative technical foul only for all requirements regardless of the number of infractions. Penalized before the start of the game.
(Art. 2.a) One administrative technical foul only for all requirements regardless of the number of infractions that occur and regardless of when they occur. However, these penalties must be recognized and penalized before the end of the first period.
When there are administrative technical fouls by both teams for violating Rule 10-2.2.a, the fouls shall offset with no free throws awarded to either team.
(Art. 2.b) One administrative technical foul only for all requirements regardless of the number of infractions that occur and regardless of when they occur.

Seems pretty clear. One shot.
Our WCC officials once again showed the level of training they have.

Alex is the WCC Player of the Week!

https://portlandpilots.com/news/2023/1/2/womens-basketball-fowler-named-wcc-player-of-the-week.aspx

Alex will graduate in May, but has one year of eligibility left if she wants to use it.   She has told me and others that it is "50/50" with regards to her returning next season.  She has said more than once that she would like to play in Europe, especially on the team in Spain that UP grads Kate Andersen and Sara Zaragoza play on.

On the other hand, if she were stay at UP, she could get her MBA which will be a benefit to her the rest of her working life...something not readily available in her native Australia.

Come out and support the women this week as they take on Santa Clara at 6pm on Thursday and USF at 5pm on Saturday.  And if you get the chance, tell Alex how much you hope she will return next year to perhaps help make the Pilots the best UP Women' Basketball team ever.

GameDay @ 6m vs. Santa Clara

2022 - 2023 Schedule/Season - Page 4 Undefe10

The Pilots may be undefeated in WCC play, but SCU will be a formidable foe.  The Broncos are 10-3 on the season and, if you will recall, beat the Pilots by 10 in California last time they met after UP prevailed in OT four weeks earlier.

In WCC play this season, SCU sandwiched a blow-out win over LMU between 1-point losses to PU and USF, and will be looking to get back on track by beating UP before heading to Spokane for their Saturday game.

No MJ and no Lucy, but it's possible McKelle will return.

The team that often can't shoot straight found a way to do it tonight.

SCU's "in your face" double-teaming of Alex kept her scoreless from the inside in the first half, so instead she stepped back and buried 4 3-point shots, all in the first half.

Finally, Alex began muscling underneath making some baskets and drawing enough fouls to go 7-7 from the line, while scoring 26 points on the night.

Emme scored a career-high 20 by matching Alex with 4 3-pointers and also going 7-7 from the line.

Not wanting to be left out, Liana was 2-2 from 3-point distance while dishing a career-high 6 assists.

All of Maisie's points came off 3 3-pointers, and as a team the Pilots tied a team record by hitting 15 from behind the arc on 29 attempts.

We are often critical of the Pilots for their high frequency of turning the ball over, but tonight they had only 13...SCU had 9.  The Pilots weakness tonight was keeping SCU from taking second and third chance shots after grabbing 15 offensive rebounds.

Oh, did I mention the Pilots won a very competitive and fun game, 81-71.

The game was indeed enjoyable. Santa Clara's freshman, Tess Heal, is a young phenom, who is likely to be all WCC in her freshman year, and a star in the conference if she remains. She displayed an array of pivots and moves in the paint that resulted in floaters for baskets. 19 points in the first half alone.

Lucy Cochrane might well have blocked many of Heal's attempts or disuaded them. Can anyone report when and if Cochrane is scheduled to return? Lets hope soon. Will she possibly be back against the Zags?

Santa Clara at times dominated on the offensive glass, as mentioned by DD. I am not sure how you tighten up on the boards other than by blocking out--but the Pilots will need to tighten up on the boards against USF.

Shearer and Kaitu'u contributed mightily and were important to the victory. Shearer is proving her 3 point acumen, in addition to her always stellar defense This was the best Kaitu'u played in quite some time.

Losing Fowler and/or Andrews will be a something of a culture shock to this program. Fowler was the antidote to Santa Clara's freshman Heal last night, and was herself dominant in the second half. She remains a pleasure to watch. And, Andrews at the helm makes this team clearly more effective.

Regardless of the stats, IMO the most effective SCU players last night were all Aussies.  #34 freshman Tess Heal, #5 sophomore Olivia Pollard, and #23 sophomore Lara Edmanson...all are from Melbourne and Pollard is in her first year at SCU after transferring from UW.  If Coach Carr can keep those three together, they are going to be formidable next season...and they might even knock off some higher seeds in Las Vegas.

Attending last night's game was UP signee, Lainey Spear.  It is hoped that Alex will play one more year at UP and Lainey will then be able to pick up where Alex left off. A tall order for sure, but that is Coach Meek's hope.

We can all hope that Coach Meek isn't being pollyannaish, but it is a very rare recruit to this program who puts up the numbers Alex Fowler has put up and continues to put up. Fowler will leave this program as the D1 all time leading scorer, particularly if she returns. Right now she is 3rd, I think, leaving two previous recruits in 4 decades that remain ahead of her, but none when she leaves.

To be sure, like money ball, maybe they can replicate her in the aggregate. The program is being run well . . .good things may happen.

Curious whether we actually attempted to recruit Heal, if anyone is aware.

GameDay...remember, it's a 5 o'clock tip!

2022 - 2023 Schedule/Season - Page 4 Scree119

As many of the "old-timers" will remember, the USF/Portland rivalry was once the hottest rivalry in the WCC when Jim Sollars was the coach.  Unfortunately for the Pilots, USF always gained the upper hand during WCC Tournament play while both teams made it to the NCAA Tournament.

USF comes into tonight's game 2-2 in WCC play after wins over SCU and PU and losses to LMU and GU. They are a good team at 12-4 overall and gave #20 GU all they could handle on Thursday night.

USF has been a gathering spot for international players over the years, and this year's team features 11 internationals, all of whom are good, and the team's best scorer is usually #21 Ionna Krimili from Greece, averaging over 17 ppg.

A word aptly used earlier this week applies equally to the Pilot efforts tonight . . . "wow." Quite the game to watch. Emme Shearer emerging as a player; Haylee running the team impressively, as noted 14 assists; Melika Samia coming in with a few minutes to play and splashing two threes.  This result despite Fowler being in foul trouble throughout.

Kaitu'u continued her positive play as well. McKelle hit some threes . . . the team was 9 for 24 from behind the arc, 37.5%.

We gave up some offensive boards but we won the rebounding battle 44 to 34.

A 31 point margin. Wow.

Next Saturday against the Zags, an important date as always but particularly so this year.

BTW, Lucy Cochrane was not wearing a walking boot tonight.

USF is a good team, the Pilots are just playing at higher level now.

Perhaps the keys are two: 1. Haylee is back and doing what point guards do best...finding the open shooter, and 2., Emme's game has blossomed as she gains more experience and confidence, and that is taking the pressure off Alex who is always double-teamed.

And those last 3 minutes, when Malika and Emma came on the court, were as exciting as it gets seeing the future of this team in good hands.

Next up: #20 Gonzaga in the Chiles Center at 5pm on Saturday January 14.

Observant "old timers" and fans, including those averse to crowing, would have to admit that a major factor in recent games is the proficiency and frequency with which the team has shot the three ball, adding to our scoring and opening the middle. Emme Shearer is locked in now, Fowler's threes have been pretty good and the rest of the Pilots shooting threes have done well. Last year, even arguably earlier this year, we had no one who reliably shot the three. I recall last year we were 0 and 17 from three against PSU. Recently, BYU, SCU and USF all were affected/hurt by our threes.

Gonzaga will be tough on the boards on Saturday.

Andrews tore her ACL last February 3 and had knee surgery that required nine months of intense rehabilitation.

How was that experience?

“It was fun,” she said.

Rehab for major knee surgery has been described in vivid terms by countless athletes, but who in their right mind has ever termed it fun?

“I call it fun,” Andrews explained, “in the sense that I knew I could put in that work to get myself back to where I am today.”

Now, where she is today . . . that’s fun.

Tomorrow nights game will feature a bigger Zag frontline than ours, and likely one determined to own the boards. With their inside presence, we will need to rely on some shooting of threes, though we have been spotty at times. As Bobby Gross, former Trailblazer, disgruntled following a loss said: "You live by the three, you die by the three." That was in an era when three point shooting was not as dominant. Nonetheless, it will be intersting to see whether Gross' saw will apply either way to the Pilot effort.

Post by Sound Voltex Fri Jan 13, 2023 1:28 pm

It’s not exactly a rivalry, but the Portland Pilots certainly have Gonzaga’s attention.

How could they not? The winner of Saturday’s game at Portland will have sole possession of first place in the West Coast Conference.

“We’re pumped to be back on the court,” point guard Kaylynne Truong said Thursday as the Zags prepared for their only game this week.

At 16-2 overall and 6-0 in the WCC, the Zags are in a strong position to reach the NCAA Tournament should they suffer an upset in the conference tournament. But a loss at Portland (12-5, 6-0) would dent those hopes.

The teams will meet again in Spokane on Feb. 11, but the winner of Saturday’s game will have the inside track for a title that recently has been decided by a single game. Case in point: last year when GU finished one game behind BYU.

Still, coach Lisa Fortier said she didn’t feel the need to “be extra amped up this week.”

“This week we’ve been able to break things down a little more,” Fortier said. “A little more micro attack to their offenses and their defenses.”

But there was no talk about a rivalry. After all, GU has won 27 of the past 28 meetings going back to 2009.

“I think that just the simple fact of our locations in the same region and being travel partners isn’t enough – there has to be some competitiveness to it,” said Portland coach Michael Meek, now in his fourth year.

Long one of the lesser programs in the WCC, Portland got a big boost with its 70-69 upset of the Zags in the semifinals of the conference tournament in Las Vegas. Portland went on to earn an automatic berth in the NCAA Tournament – the one that was canceled by the pandemic.

“I think this team is better than that team,” Fortier said.

The Pilots have built on that success. Last year, they handed regular-season champion BYU its only loss of the regular season and took Gonzaga to the limit in two meetings.

Portland has won seven straight – its longest streak since 2010 – and is coming off a 31-point rout of San Francisco on Saturday.

Forward Alex Fowler averages 17.6 points and 5.6 rebounds while shooting 64.7% from the floor.

Three other Pilots also average in double figures, including Liberty High (Spangle) product Maisie Burnham (11 ppg), Haylee Andrews (10.9), and Emme Shearer (10.4).

“I did watch a couple of their games with coach Craig (Fortier),” Truong said. “They’re going to do what they’re going to do.

“A win would be great, and it would be a big win if we could get it.”

Between the ineffective full court press and the ineffective zone defense, the Zags scored 46 points in the paint (too often barely contested).  Then add 21 points from 3's and that leaves 6 to get to the total.  Don't feel like I can complain about our 23 turnovers as a big contributor when the Zags had 18.

After initially being helped off the floor, Andrews walked through the postgame handshake line. Following the game, she said that, while optimistic, she wouldn’t know an exact prognosis until undergoing further testing.

“I’ll get more information tomorrow after an MRI,” she said.

While we wait to learn the extent of Haylee's injury, it seems fitting to acknowledge what a marvelous game Haylee played against the Zags. Admittedly we lost, but Haylee's play was instrumental in keeping us close until the end. 27 points, 6 rebounds, 4 assists and 2 steals, and 4 for 6 from behind the arc: arguably even her best game.

Way to go Haylee. Hoping you will be back soon.
