UW had to forfeit a game to UCLA because of COVID when the two sides could not ( or would not) agree on a date to reschedule.

Tough upcoming schedule for the Pilots with 5 games in 10 days after 10 days off for finals.

Cal Poly was edged by USD, 52-51 in San Diego yesterday and will play at PSU Saturday before coming to The Bluff on Monday.

Oregon lost to ASU in OT yesterday, 69-67, and coming up has UP sandwiched between Stanford and Baylor.

Much improved San Jose St. has won three straight and will now play the WCC four games in a row: PU, UOP, UP, and SCU.

Montana St. has won three out of four since beating the Pilots in San Antonio and will now face North Dakota St. and D1 St. Thomas before hosting UP on 12/19.

UC Davis is 4-3 after beating UOP at home last week and next faces OSU and UOP again, this time in Stockton, before hosting UP on 12/22.

It is not ideal that the Pilots will again have 10 days off before beginning the WCC schedule with BYU on January 1, but at least the only bowl game the Pilots' 7pm tip will be up against is the Sugar Bowl with Baylor playing Ole Miss.

(Perhaps it was by choice, but #12 BYU was relegated to the Independence Bowl in Shreveport on December 17 against UAB).

Now 10-0, USF was down to Fresno St. 31-24 at the half but led by Jamaree Bouyea, they roared (actually, I'm not sure what a Don does) back to outscore the Bulldogs in the next half, 47-32.  Next up for USF is Grand Canyon on Saturday and ASU on Sunday.

Utah St. has now lost back-to-back games to the WCC after being defeated by SMC last week and dropping an 11-point game to BYU in Provo tonight.  BYU dropped from 12th to 24th in the polls after its loss to Utah Valley, but has now beaten Missouri St. and Utah St.

Without Shantay Legans and half its roster that transferred, EWU almost upset Colorado in Boulder tonight.  Fun game to watch as the 17-point underdog Eagles led by as many as 4 late in the game but their redshirt freshman, who scored 23 on the night, finally missed a couple of 3s and that was that.

I also watched Deng Dut's Wyoming team (8-0 at the beginning of the night) get steamrollered by Arizona. It was 53-22 at the half before they backed off in the 2nd half.  Dut did not play, and I believe it was the first game he has missed after averaging 9 minutes and 1 point per game in the first eight games.

It is doubtful this game will be rescheduled, and you have to wonder if GU missing out on playing a Quad-4 team will affect the Zags seeding in the Tournament.  #WCC$$$

Tuned in the Louisiana vs. Louisiana Tech game today to see Theo Akwuba, but of course just like Deng Dut at Wyoming the other day, Theo did not play, now missing his second game in a row after starting and scoring in double figures in his previous contests.

Theo was sitting at the end of the bench, so I am guessing he is injured, and Dut played 2 minutes in his next game without scoring.

Also watched the end of the Dixie St. win over Denver in a stinker of game just to see Mikey Henn. Henn has been a bright light on the Pioneers 3-9 team, averaging 11 points while playing almost 30 minutes per game.

The #16 BYU women's team got an early welcome to the Big-12 last night, losing to Oklahoma in OT, and today the #24 BYU men's team got a taste of Big East competition, losing to Creigton in "neutral" Ogden scratch in a game that was never close.

Tonight, Cal got by SCU in Berkeley, Pacific lost to the surging Spartans of San Jose St. on the road (SJSU has won four of their last five), and LMU lost at home to New Mexico St.

Pepperdine had no problem with Alabama St., nor did USD with Cal Lutheran or SMC with UCSB.

Cal Poly, UP's opponent on Monday, beat PSU in the Viking Pavilion today, 61-58, in a slow-paced game, and of course the leader in points, rebounds, and assists for the Mustangs was the guy Shantay did not bring from EWU, grad-student Jacob Davison.

Fun game of the day was watching the fans rushing the court after Notre Dame's win at home over #10 Kentuckey.

Defense wins games, and that was proven tonight when Gand Canyon handed USF (10-1) their first loss of the season, 49-48 in Phoenix. (USF plays at ASU tomorrow/Sunday).

LMU led late but fell to Nevada in Reno, 68-63.

Pepperdine dropped SEMO 83-77 in Malibu (UP beat SEMO 74-68 in San Antonio during the Thanksgiving Tournament).

#25 Texas Tech got within 2-points of #5 Gonzaga late, but the Zags prevailed, 69-55, in Phoenix.

BYU had no problem with Weber St. in Ogden, 89-71, and San Deigo beat Northern Arizona in Phoenix, 69-59.

UP's next opponent, UC-Davis, started fast, outscoring Pacific 41-21 in the first half, and held on to win 77-67 in Stockton.

San Francisco came back from their 1-point loss the night before to beat Arizona State on the road, 66-65. ASU was coming off wins over Oregon, Grand Canyon, and Creighton and had 5 days to prepare for USF.

Santa Clara had no problem at home against Montana, 79-64.

Although the San Diego women lost by 16 points to Texas, the game was close until the end, but that is not the story...

Yesterday the USD women lost to ASU at home in an afternoon game, and then after 8pm USD Coach Cindy Fisher received a call asking if her team would like to fly to Las Vegas to play the Longhorns in another afternoon game.  On quick notice, and after consulting with the team captains, Cindy gathered the team this morning and flew to the game with just enough time to conduct a shoot-around before playing the #4 team in the nation on ESPN.  Texas' original opponent, UCLA, dropped out due to COVID.

San Jose St. was 4-25 (16%) from behind the arc at home against Santa Clara. Rolling Eyes  SCU won, 79-57. Perhaps it was UP's defense that allowed the Spartans to go 17-33 (51.5%) in their 90-78 defeat of the Pilots.

Pepperdine played in Eugene tonight and never trailed by more than 3 points until very late when they went cold and lost, 68-59....the Pilots lost 91-76 in Eugene six days ago.

GU taking advantage of the 16 game WCC schedule and testing themselves with tough homes games to prepare for conference. They played No. Arizona on Monday (NET 303) and squeaked by 95-49. They take a step up in challenge next Monday with No. Alabama (NET 240).

Maybe if we said we were No. Portland they'd play us twice. But then I guess they'd have to come here, and not thrill their home fans with those exciting non-conf games. So probably not.

Of all the BS that Gonzaga was selling in it's shake down if the WCC a few years ago, the whole story about the conference membership forcing low caliber competition on them was the biggest joke of all.

Zag's non conference schedule has gotten softer but the number of home games has grown larger.

Someday those tables will turn...someday day...

GU has played several Top-25 teams, but yes, they have also played at least 5 teams that are still transitioning to D1.

Dixie St. 2nd D1 year
Bellarmine 2nd D1 year
Tarleton St. 2nd D1 year
Merrimack 3rd D1 year
North Alabama 4th D1 year

In some ways, it is as if the Pilots are a first year D1 team transitioning from D2...it is going to take a few years.

The virus has hit the WCC again...this time in Stockton.

Pacific has postponed its next 3 games:

1/15 @ St. Mary's
1/17 Pepperdine
1/20 Gonzaga

Rescheduling is going to become a little trickier the deeper into the schedule it gets, and the game against Pepperdine was already a makeup game.

https://medium.com/wills-wcc-blog/considerations-and-priorities-for-the-wccs-postponements-4bb09bc629b

At this point, the league needs to focus on making sure that the most important games get played. That needs to be the top priority. Absolutely no time or energy should be spent trying to figure out when Gonzaga can make up its game at San Diego, or when Saint Mary’s can fit in a make up with Pacific, or when BYU can get that trip to Portland, until the most important games have been dealt with first.

The entire rescheduling effort going forward should be focused on one specific goal: getting four teams into the NCAA Tournament.

Shoving a trip to Stockton on a random Tuesday does not help Saint Mary’s at-large resume. The same can be said about forcing BYU to make up its game at Portland or Gonzaga finding time to head to San Diego.

...

It would be really crappy for BYU to make up its game at Portland, catch a few cases on the trip, and then have to postpone other games. No disrespect to Portland (great rebuild so far!), but almost every other game in league play is more important to BYU’s at-large profile than a tilt with the Pilots. This scenario, should it play out, could be devastating for a team on the bubble.

...

Back to my BYU at Portland example. Let’s say they reschedule the trip to Portland for BYU’s bye on Feb. 17 (Portland plays San Diego that day, but forget that for a moment). Someone rolls an ankle. Could happen to anybody, in any game, right? It’s an unfortunate reality of the sport. But someone rolls an ankle in a game against Portland, that was rescheduled, two days before they play at Saint Mary’s. Conference tournament is two weeks away. Maybe they’re not back. BYU gets bounced in its first game. The Cougars end up in the NIT, but hey they got that trip to Portland.

And that’s where I’ll transition to why the league needs to focus first, and perhaps only, on the games that matter.

...

As of its most recent update (January 12) Bracket Matrix has four WCC teams in the field: Gonzaga’s a 1, BYU’s an 8, San Francisco’s a 9 and Saint Mary’s is an 11. It’s looking more and more likely that the WCC will get those four bids. But also, that the WCC will have at least two, and maybe three teams on the bubble.

Rescheduling Saint Mary’s versus Pacific doesn’t help in any way. As I mentioned above, they could catch covid from it. Someone could get injured. Or, God forbid, they could just flat out lose, which would be the worst case scenario. Of the 10 currently postponed games among the league’s four contenders, five are in the bottom two quadrants. For the three contenders not named Gonzaga, those could easily be bubble-popping losses. For Gonzaga, a loss in one of its three Q3/Q4 postponed games, should they be rescheduled, would almost certainly knock them off the 1 seed line.

There is almost nothing to gain from playing those games. But there’s $1.68 million, or more, to lose.

...

The league has a shot at sending four teams to the NCAA Tournament for the first time ever. That alone is worth pursuing with maximum effort. Especially since one of those four, BYU, is bolting to the Big 12. Without the Cougars, going forward, three teams to the dance will be the new four team goal. Even that might not be possible without the Cougars. Which is why this year, when it is possible, is of the utmost importance for the league and its member institutions.

More important than trying to squeeze in Gonzaga at Pacific or BYU at Portland. More important for Pacific and Portland, too. They’ll get to reap the rewards of a four-bid WCC, should it happen. So, for all involved, maybe it’s best to not let those teams present roadblocks on the path to that goal.

Haha, true, but the writer has a point if the WCC is going to attempt the quadfecta.

I am told that, so far, BYU has shown no interest in rescheduling their game in Portland.

On the other hand, if BYU were to relinquish its home game against the Pilots on January 23, and instead play in Portland, it would be more meaningful for their NET ranking to win on the road vs. winning at home. Twisted Evil

Just saying...

The game to record/watch today should be BYU at USF, as they are two of the four WCC teams that expect to make it to the Tournament in March.

BYU's NET is 30 and USF's is 31...

KenPom favors the Dons by 2, and Las Vegas is counting on USF to win by at least 4.5 points with a 144 o/u.

GU is at SCU, while the Gaels will just have to listen to Randy barking as their game with Pacific is "postponed."

Home teams all held serve.
BYU beat USD 79-71.
SMC beat SCU 76-65.
And LMU beat PU 85-80 in OT. A surprising result considering how LMU and PU performed against Pilots.
