2021 Offseason
Tyler McCliment-Call is leaving the team to look for more playing time elsewhere. Tyler played some good minutes in her freshman season, averaging close to 10 minutes and 3 points per game while playing strong defense.
As Tyler’s home is Spokane, and Eastern Washington just fired their coach of 20 years and now has 6 players in the portal, EWU could be a good landing spot for her...just saying.
There is no word as to whether her sister, Jacksen, will also be leaving, but she saw virtually zero time on the court this past season.

Re: 2021 Offseason
Most everyone who has met her thinks Jayce Gorzeman is the about the nicest person they’ve ever known, but we will be saying goodbye to her as she is now in the transfer portal.
Jayce graduates in three weeks and has an extra year of eligibility due to the COVID exception, but there is really no room for her on the team when you consider the talent coming in for next season and the budget.
Maybe she can join her younger sister who is on a track scholarship at Nevada...
IMO, she’ll do spectacularly in life wherever she goes!

Re: 2021 Offseason
Big news and a great addition to the Pilots roster for the coming season: 6-0 wing Maisie Burnham is transferring to UP from EWU.
With the firing of the EWU coach after 20 years on the job, eight players have put their names in the portal, and Maisie from Spangle, Washington, is heading to Portland with four years of eligibility remaining after her “free” freshman year.
As a freshman, Burnham was a starter EWU this past season and averaged over 14 points and almost 6 rebounds per game while shooting 80% from the line and 42% from the field.
Oh, and Maisie was the Big Sky Freshman of the Year!

Re: 2021 Offseason
Good to see that our quality recruits are undeterred by the riots here in Portland as some suggested they might. Its a nice city that occasionally enjoys wonderful weather like today. On balance, nice place to obtain an education. Their choices to matriculate here are well made.
More importantly, it appears the competition for starting positions will be intense. I am assuming, absent unexpected departures, the starting lineup will include Andrews, Fowler and Cochrane. Beyond that starting positions and playing time are unclear, at least to me.

Go Pilots. Welcome Maisie.

Not only is it about a 6 hour drive from Canyon to Las Cruces, it is also about a 6 hour drive from Canyon to Denver...where a certain former Pilots MBB player recently grad-transferred...DoubleDipper wrote:Jayce has decided to move closer to home (Las Cruces) and attend graduate school and play basketball at D2 West Texas A&M in the Panhandle city of Canyon.

The coach of the West Texas A&M women's team has just been named the head coach at D1 Northern Colorado of the Big Sky Conference, and she is taking Jayce with her to Greeley...about a 70 minute drive from U. of Denver.

Most probably know that LMU has a terrific new head coach out of USC, Aarika Hughes, but did you know that Mike Meek was her coach at Southridge High School for four years?

Re: 2021 Offseason
Rising sophomore Emme Shearer has been invited to join the New Zealand Tall Ferns selection camp as their 3-week community coaching clinic gets underway this week and the team begins to focus on the FIBA Women's Asia Cup.
If Emme were to be selected for the team for either the Asia Cup this fall or the World Cup qualifiers in February, she would likely have to choose between college ball and playing for her country...but it is a situation the UP Soccer teams have gotten through in the past.

How cool is that! We were thrilled when she broke the record - and now to come back! And she's a great defender! Looking forward to next season.

Re: 2021 Offseason
Maddie seems so diminutive, but she is a shooter!
I guess there will now be a ** next to her upcoming five-year 3-point total, while everyone in the future shoots for her four-year record.
The ** will probably be widely used throughout college athletics as more and more players compete for five years after being provided an extra COVID year.

Re: 2021 Offseason
From a scholarship standpoint, I’d say the program is there. With eight new players arriving this summer to join the nine players expected to return from last season, the 15 allowed scholarships are maxed- out, and there are two walk-ons.Geezaldinho wrote:Let me know when the program is fully funded.

Stephen F. Austin went 24-3 last season and was 14-0 in Southland Conference play.BSleik wrote:Tyler McCliment-Call has found her new home at Stephen F. Austin.
Their 3 losses were to ASU, Houston, and Georgia Tech...by a combined 13 points. They beat St. Mary's and VCU in Tempe by a combined 15 points.
S. F. Austin lost in OT to Georgia Tech in the NCAA Tournament.
I have heard the Ladyjacks will be playing the Pilots in the Chiles Center in December...I do not know if the game is a home-and-home, but if it is, I betcha a dollar none of the Pilots players have ever been to Nacogdoches.

You have to love the fun of small town basketball...The Observer wrote:Collman, a senior guard, is committed to play collegiate basketball at the University of Portland next fall.
“She’s really passionate about playing basketball and has put in the time to become such a good player,” Wright said.
Collman leads the team in scoring and controls the pace of the game at the point guard position for the Tigers.

Pay up.
You should have limited your bet to women’s basketball players.
The baseball team played SFA in Nacodoches.

WANTED: UP WBB is seeking a huge assist through the donation of a rental house at Black Butte Ranch September 24-26 for their team retreat.
This is an important weekend for the team to build the program's foundation for the upcoming season, and is a designated time for the team to establish its goals, standards, leadership roles, builds deeper relationship bonds and create fun lasting memories that helps to carry the team through the ebb and flows throughout the course of a season.
If you can help out with a rental home for that weekend, Sept. 24th-26th at Black Butte Ranch, please reach out to Assistant Coach Sharon Rissmiller at rissmils@up.edu
Here is a fun little video of former UP coach Kelly Graves and the Ducks at Black Butte seven years ago:

Jayce Gorzeman
Hi Everyone,
This is Jayce mom Brandi. Just setting the record straight the reason Jayce left Portland is because she was not asked back by the coaching staff at UP. Therefore, entering the transfer portal was her only option because she wanted to play another year. She was originally signed by West Texas a&m by a coach who's been following her since high school. This coach ultimately became the head coach at University of Northern Colorado and asked Jayce to go with her. Jayce did not leave UP to follow a men's player. If anyone has any questions just ask our family is an open book!!!
