Re: 2021-22 Schedule
I miss the full, balanced conference schedule with travel partners. I liked the rhythm and familiarity that came with that system.
Too bad the WCC continues to hold back Gonzaga from reaching its true potential, thereby making this frankenstein schedule an ongoing necessity. Given that the zags failed to win the national championship last year, perhaps going down to the 14-game WCC schedule is in order?

I dunno.
Opening up with a team that was undefeated last year sounds risky.

We are told D3 Trinity is no longer part of the Thanksgiving tournament in San Antonio that includes UP, Incarnate Word, and SE Missouri State.
Apparently the search is now on for one more team, but it might be kind of late to find a D1 participant...fingers crossed.

Re: 2021-22 Schedule
Two Saturday games to open the WCC schedule, including New Years Day, a football day. Then none for 4 weeks, then 2 Saturdays to close the schedule. Yuck.

What's wrong with Saturday games? Hasn't the WCC played Thurs/Sat for years?

Saturday games are great. I was complaining about the distribution of Saturday games, when the most fans, and kids, will be in attendance. New Years Day is an awful day for getting casual fans to attend. Bowl games, parties, etc. One more Saturday game the next week, then a long stretch of no Saturday games until the end of the season. I'd prefer them to be spaced out throughout the season, approximately every other week. Get fans coming more often. If the team is in the cellar by late February, what's the draw for those casual fans?
(I've been told I can find the downside of any situation, but it just struck me that this schedule is not favorable for getting casual fans into Chiles.)

Re: 2021-22 Schedule
Gotcha. Sorry, thought you didn’t like the Saturday games.
If the Pilots have a halfway decent non-conf I’ll bring a crew down to watch the BYU game on New Year’s Day. About time for my quinquennial trip back down to Chiles anyway.

I know, I know. It's still mid-August and there's still an open scholarship.
Schedules have been input into the above page and the first record projections are available. It's not pretty for #293 Portland... 8-20 overall, 2-14 in WCC. They don't have the UIW tournament in yet, and that will almost certainly bump their projected overall record to 10-21.
Good thing the games aren't played on some device in a basement somewhere

Based purely on barttorvik.com and a device in the basemen, UP is better than only 3 of its opponents this coming season...Dean Murdoch wrote:

KenPom had the WCC finishing as the #8 conference behind the Power Six and the AAC this past season (there are 32 conferences). Without UP, the WCC would have been #7!

The Pilots will open the San Antonio tournament against Montana St. on November 26 before facing the Bobcats again in Bozeman on December 19 before taking a few days off at Christmas and facing BYU at home on New Year's Day.

Bart Torvik’s projections now include the UIW tournament. 9-22 overall? I’ll take the over, thank you very much.

Re: 2021-22 Schedule
It seems to me the Pilots have generally played two exhibition games prior to the start of the season, but this year just one.
Does that mean UP will play a "secret scrimmage" against someone?

Re: 2021-22 Schedule
To keep the "secret" games secret they must be closed to the public and the two participating schools are not allowed to publicize them, meaning no fans or media are allowed...and as Deaner is not officially part of either school, he could spill the beans about the game against Seattle U.Dean Murdoch wrote:Can’t be that secret… at home against Seattle on Oct 23!
As most will recall, Coach Legans was the assistant to the current head coach at Seattle U. when they were both at EWU.
NCAA rules allow D1 teams to play up to two exhibition games against non-D1 opponents or one exhibition game and a preseason “secret scrimmage” between D1 teams.

Hmm, I wonder if I were to put on a UP maintenance shirt and trousers and carry around a spool of cable as if I was replacing the sound system in the Chiles Center I could "observe" the scrimmage.
Worth a try?

I think someone managed to get full stats from the scrimmage the Pilots had against either UO or OSU at the Nike campus a few years back. Maybe I’ll have someone rummage through Chiles Center trash cans the next day to find them this year
