Nothing new to report except that UP will be at Kent St. again for the 2024-25 season after UP dropped their Chiles Center matchup against the Golden Flashes this season to play in Hawaii.

UP was slated to play in an MTE in Palm Springs at Thanksgiving, but that too was canceled so the Pilots could play in the Honolulu MTE at Christmas. I think Pepperdine will now play the Palm Springs games.

UP is looking for an opponent during the Thanksgiving break.

I am told there will be the usual two non D1 games...

So the Pilots gave Kent State a 2-for-1, then cancelled the 1? Or am I reading that incorrectly?

All I have been told is UP will be at Kent St. in November or December, 2024.

A good portion of the schedule including game times is in the pilot navigator emailed out today. I don't feel like transcribing it while on my phone though...

The Navigator still says Kent St. at Chiles on 12/22, so . . .

I think with the Honolulu MTE the team can play 31 games, but in separate conversations I heard, "scheduling is very difficult" and "we are going to give the guys time to rest and recuperate between games this season."

But if I were to guess, I would say the staff is looking for one more D1 game.

I did notice the Cal Fullerton game dropped off the "advance schedule," but I don't know if there were other games as well.

Oh, as in the past, those preseason scrimmages are "SECRET."

So, also like in the past, we won't be allowed to attend, and we'll have to go to the wastebasket to find the box score... Rolling Eyes

The matchup against Hawai'i will be a tough one...and not just because the Sheriff Center will be filled with Rainbow Warrior fans, but because UH returns 3 of its 5 starters, all seniors. Hawai'i won this tournament last year.

Last season UH was 21-11, including a nice 13-5 record at home to finish 131 in the NET (UP was 168).

The game will be at 6pm Hawai'i time/8pm PST and will be televised on ESPN2.

If you marked your calendars with the sneaked schedule posted on August 7, in addition to the game against the Wolf Pack in Reno, the Willamette game was moved from November 22 to Saturday November 25 at 5pm, and the Wyoming game on December 1 has been moved up an hour to 6pm.

Hmmm. So the late addition might turn out to be the only Q1 game of the non-conference schedule. Numbers are Barttorvik's projected ranks for next year...

I finally had a chance to look at Barttorivik's projections (Portland is #156), and it will be interesting to see how close those projections are as the season progresses...because with only a gut feeling, not statistics, I think there will be some very different results.

At the Diamond Head Classic, UP will play either UMass (#193) or Georgia Tech (#87) on the second night, and could end up playing Nevada a second time depending upon how the brackets play out.

The men open the WCC schedule at home on January 6 against Pacific.

Only one 2-game (Thur-Sat) home stand, and two away 2-game trips. The other weeks are one home and one away, except opening week with only one game (UOP) and one other week.
That other week is GU at Chiles the penultimate week of the regular season, with a stand-alone game on a Thursday, and four days to prep and a week to recover.
The GU game at McCarthy will be on Wednesday 02/07, as GU travels to play Kentucky the following Saturday.
Final three games of the regular season are all at home (GU, SCU, LMU).

In a charity exhibition game between two upcoming UP opponents to aid the victims of the Lahaina fires, St. Mary's downed Hawaii 92-58 in front of 4900 fans in Honolulu last night.

Super-sophomore Aiden Mahaney went off for 25 points in 28 minutes, including 4-7 beyond the arc, for SMC.

Does anything jump off the page here? Not really. But it’s Portland, it’s a mid-major program that was a dumpster fire just three years ago and is now working its way back into respectability.

A couple of years ago, Portland would have had no problem getting road games against good power conference teams (and they did), but now? After the college basketball world watched the Pilots hang right with UNC and Michigan State and work over Villanova in the PK85? Would you want to bring that risk into your gym?

The Diamond Head Classic is decent, though the start against Hawaii is rough. Nevada on the road is a quality opponent. And I like that the Pilots maintain their Rose City rivalries with Portland State, Willamette and Lewis & Clark (though I’d like it more if the latter two were D1).

Overall, there’s not a lot of meat on this bone, but like I said, would you want the Pilots coming into your gym if you were playing for an at-large?

UP's Monday opponent, Long Beach St., played a home (exhibition) game...a rare occurrence for the team led by Don Monson who gets all the "buy game" money from away games.

Before Big West Conference play begins on December 28, Long Beach's only home games are against Sacramento St; Life Pacific; and Cal St. Dominquez Hills.

From the article, it would seem #120 Long Beach has some high-flying transfers and a strong inside game.
