Re: 2022 Non-Conference Games
Do you suppose the "vote" to expand the schedule to 18 games will need only a thumbs-down from GU to be defeated? You know, kind of a super-supermajority...kind of like when the minority rules in Congress.Dean Murdoch wrote:Dean Murdoch wrote:Has the WCC decided on 16 or 18 game schedule yet?
And right on cue...@RoccoMiller8 wrote:According to multiple sources, WCC Presidents and leadership will hold a vote in the coming days on if the conference will move from 16 to 18-games.
The league has most recently been playing a 16-game league schedule, leaving room for as many as 15 non-conference contests.
I agree, by far most measures considered by the U.S. Congress as part of the legislative process require only a simple majority vote for passage. However, some actions, like impeaching presidents or amending the Constitution, are considered so important that they require a supermajority vote...usually 67%.
Not sure if going back to the traditional 18 game schedule will be as important as impeachment...and what about next season? Will there be just 9 teams in the WCC? If so, that make for very complicated scheduling.

Looks like North Dakota St. will play in the Chiles Center on Monday, December 5, two days after the Pilots play North Dakota at home.Dean Murdoch wrote:Awaiting dates for Seattle (home), NDSU (home), and Portland State (away).
Still waiting to learn whether it will be a 16 or 18 game WCC schedule this season...

Re: 2022 Non-Conference Games
Whether the WCC plays 16 or 18 conference games, preseason scheduling just got a little tougher for UP because PSU has reneged on their handshake deal to play UP twice this season and pulled out of their commitment to play in the Viking Pavilion.Dean Murdoch wrote:Awaiting dates for Seattle (home),NDSU(home), and Portland State (away).
UP and PSU are still scheduled to face off** in the Chiles Center on Veterans Day, November 11.
(** I think it is faceoff in hockey, but I'll leave it to Deaner to set me straight on that).

I think you're right. But the most common way I use to identify an American watching a hockey game is when they claim a certain play was "offsides" - as a blowhard know-it-all, it's generally hard to resist correcting them and telling them it's just offside.

Brits have always been smug about Americans using the terms Soccer( a term which they invented) and offsides. But their own FA representatives in FIBA made the same gaff.
About 4-5 years ago, FIBA, who is the governing body that makes the laws for fútbol, used the term “Offsides” in one of its circulars on rule changes. They made the distinction between being offsides and being in an offside position.
So it’s open season on what the correct term is.
They also committed the sin of referring to the touchline as the sideline.
Must be the influence of US billionaires owning Premier league teams.

I assume you meant the International Football Association Board (IFAB) and not the International Basketball Federation (FIBA from the French name)? Would be quite fun to see FIBA make the rules though.

With games against Gonzaga on 11/7 and Washington on 11/11, it certainly seems as if North Florida would be in need of a PNW dance partner on 11/9.

I was told today that U. of North Florida is indeed UP's opening game opponent for the 2022-23 preseason on Wednesday, November 9.
(The Pilots will also likely play an exhibition against a non-D1 opponent on Monday, November 7.)

North Florida of the ASUN conference was 8-20 last year, with a net of 275. The Ospreys should be a good test and a winnable game.

I think the Pilots played North Florida at some point early in the Porter era. Can't recall how it went and to be honest I'm a little terrified to look up the result!

I couldn't find a game against UNF, just a couple against Florida A&M.

Re: 2022 Non-Conference Games
The three road games in five days that we know North Florida has scheduled this coming season seems a lot, but last season they started the season by playing on the road at Texas Tech, Texas A&M, Grand Canyon, Arizona St., and UCLA in the first nine days.
Yes, they lost all five games…but came closest to winning at ASU while losing by 10 to the team that had beaten UP by 16 points six days earlier.
Oh, and nine days after losing to UCLA, they lost at Kentucky.
So, if schools like those six and UW and GU want to play them, Pilot fans should not have a complaint about scheduling UNF.

It appears that UP will host Seattle U. on November 17.Dean Murdoch wrote:Awaiting dates for Seattle (home),NDSU(home), andPortland State (away).
However, I believe that is also the day the first round of the men's soccer playoffs begin. So, fingers crossed the UP men's soccer team can host a game the following day or the two games can be deconflicted on Thursday the 17th.
Still no word on the WCC schedule being 16 or 18 games...

Re: 2022 Non-Conference Games
I was asked this morning why the players are on campus a couple of weeks before summer school instead of enjoying their time at home.
I guess the short answer is because the guys want to get after it! They are back two weeks before the beginning of Summer Session II because the NCAA allows 8 weeks of summer conditioning and on-court work with coaches, and summer school is only 6 weeks in length.
Unless the rules have changed (again), they are allowed 8 hours total supervised work per week, including 4 hours per week on the court. However, you know the team will put in more work individually without organized coaching.
The first day of the regular school year begins on August 29, and this year the first “official” practice (and “midnight-madness” at some schools) begins on September 26 with the first “official” games being played on November 7. During the six-week period between practice and games, 30 days of on-court practice is allowed by the NCAA, so some schools, like UP, usually begin practice a few days later to get more court time closer to game day.
I don’t expect there will be a “midnight-madness” for UP fans, but there will likely be a student-centric practice/swag giveaway at some point.

I am told the Pilots will cross the country to northeast Ohio to play Kent St. of the Mid-American Conference on November 14, and Kent will come to the Chiles Center sometime in 2023.up7587 wrote:So, a couple more D-2 games at Chiles, I guess. And GU brings in extra patsies.
Kent St. was 23-11 overall and 16-4 in conference play last season before losing to the team that beat UP, Southern Utah, in the postseason.
