More podcast interviews, kinda skimmed through them and seemed to be usual talking points about transitioning, transfer portal, building a program, etc. Seemed to have talked to Porter and the other players.

Agreed with Canzano's post-interview point, the men's basketball program needs to focus more on finding an identity instead of just "be the next Gonzaga"

Sorry, meant to post this article 3 weeks ago, but it is still a good read:
https://medium.com/wills-wcc-blog/shantay-legans-named-head-coach-at-portland-fd3c00c36f30From my perspective, having watched Legans’ teams fairly closely over the past few seasons, this is a great hire for the Pilots.

Re: The Shantay Legans Era
It’s not just athletes who have been leaving Cheney since the height of the pandemic.
After leading EWU to the NCAA Tournament last month, head men’s basketball coach Shantay Legans accepted the same job at the University of Portland, opening the floodgates.
Legans took three of his better players from EWU – Jack Perry, Mike Meadows and Tyler Robertson – assistant coaches Bobby Suarez, T.J. Lipold, and multiple Eastern recruits with him.
Legans pointed to EWU’s lack of resources and management for the recent departures.
“Not knowing what you’re going to get day in and day out, that’s hard,” Legans said. “This ain’t Forrest Gump. It ain’t like a box of chocolates.”

Re: The Shantay Legans Era
From Brian Bennett's mid-major mailbag on The Athletic:
(Won't let me post a link)
(Won't let me post a link)
"Q:What’s it going to take for Shantay Legans to help Portland crawl out of the WCC basement? Timeline? What is the program’s ceiling? Can they get to the top 3 of WCC?
A:Legans is a bright young coach who did an excellent job at Eastern Washington. But I was kind of surprised to see him take this gig, frankly. I lived in Portland not long ago and have been to a game at the Chiles Center. It’s a beautiful campus in a great city, but this has been an absolute graveyard of a men’s basketball program. The school has high admissions standards and is an afterthought among local sports fans. Legans somehow found players to come to Cheney, Wash., so at least now he has a desirable location to sell. The WCC has a good TV deal, and you can tell recruits they can come and play against Gonzaga. If Legans succeeds here — and success should be considered a winning record and, like, a top-four conference finish in the next five years — it will be quite an accomplishment. At least he can enjoy plenty of Breakside IPAs in the process. (Hey, boss, I need to go do a Legans feature ASAP!)"

It’s funny how we focus on different sentences from an article…
My first though was I bet there is plenty of this stuff floating around in the back room.

This morning's CBB Central podcast with Coach Legans...
https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/cbb-central/id1474433304?i=1000527313246
I've chosen the Apple link because it is easier to jump to Shantay's interview at the 36.30 mark, but you do NOT have to have Apple iTunes to listen.

The men's basketball twitter profile shared this article, but it is paywalled. Anyone have "methods of access" or can post a synopsis?

there is only a small paragraph on Legans and UP
New high-major coaches and other notables
Shantay Legans, Portland Pilots: Given the strength of schedule, it's too early to get too excited about the Pilots, but they've already won seven games this season -- after winning six games all of last season. The best win was probably over Portland State and one of the seven wins came against a non-Division I opponent, but at least there's some promise for a Pilots program with nine losing seasons in its past 10. Portland has improved defensively up to this point in the season.

I agree it is too early to get excited, but it is hard to control enthusiasm for the coaching change. I recall that Porter had some successful pre-season results (6-3 last year, starting 6-1 two years ago including strong showing in a loss at USC), and we all know how those years ended.
