Some other conference members also did not finish preseason strong.
PU lost at San Jose St (4-10) by 15, 83-68.
UOP lost at UC Irvine (8-7) 69-56.
Morgan St (6-8 ) beat LMU 71-71.
USF lost to Harvard 84-81 OT.
BYU, SCU, AMC and GU all won.  None played a team with a winning record.  GU hosted Detroit Mercy, which is 2-12.  I wondered why they were playing a hospital, but I looked it up and it is a Jesuit school, so I guess they were throwing a brother a bone.
USD played a D-III school.

WTF?
I watched them trounce/embarrass Seattle U on TV after losing to UP, and now the Rattlers are on a two game winning streak with the potential for a very good record in league play (MEAC).

Crazy night:
GU hosted PU, and hung on to win 75-70. Wonder what the GU Board is saying?
SCU ran out to a big halftime lead, and beat USD 80-63.
BYU beat LMU 63-38. 101 total points? What was the O/U?
Still waiting for SMC and UOP to finish.

After 4 overtimes in Stockton, UOP beat SMC 107-99. Randy Bennett looks angry. How will Damon celebrate?

Like us against USF, they also broke a long losing streak at home against SMC. Last win? December 11, 1997.

(They did beat SMC in 2012 but that was at a neutral site tournament)

Best possible outcome tonight for the Pilots. BYU had to play OT in Moraga and lost, with the game ending at 11:20pm MT. Childs is out injured. I’m not saying I expect the Pilots to win, but all the factors out of our control are lining up in our favor.

USD led 1-0, then trailed 23-5 after 7 minutes. I think Coach Few had a message for his team after least week's games.

USF go their first conf. win, beating SCU 80-61 at home.

SCU made all the plays on both ends of the court in the last two minutes in Moraga while handing SMC their 2nd WCC loss of the season, 67-66...sorry Randy!

Down 14 at the half, UOP fought back but sill lost to USF 79-75 in Stockton.

GU beat LMU by 25 in LA.

Unfortunately for BYU, Yoeli will miss their game in Spokane on Saturday too.

BYU gets SMC at home on February 1 and GU at home February 22...he should be back by then.

In other WCC games on 01/23,
BYU went to UOP and won 74-60. Childs played and scored 26.
PU upset SCU in Santa Clara in an overtime barn burner, 90-86.
SMC beat USF in a grinder, 58-48.

Childs scored 19, Hawes 20, Barcello 14, and Toolson 17, but BYU still lost at USF, 83-82, on the strength of Khalil Shabazz coming off the bench and scoring 32 points and Jamaree Boyea dropping 23.

USF was down by 14 when I started watching at about the 15 minute mark, but then went on a 21-0 run. BYU hit a 3-pointer at the buzzer to bring them within 1.

I love the result, but it could be a disaster for BYU and the WCC in March.

Remind me how the Pilots beat the Dons...

SCU won at USD, 65-52
SMC won at LMU, 73-62
UOP lost at GU, 92-59

It's a shame that we have to turn to our TVs to watch fun, competitive WCC men's basketball, but last night there were two great games we can only dream about seeing in the Chiles Center as USF nearly upset GU (without Killian Tillie) in War Memorial Gym before losing by 4 (USF led at the half by eight), and BYU downed SMC in Provo, 81-79.

The Gaels might have prevailed, but Malik Fitts was "homered" with three ticky-tacky fouls in quick succession and fouled-out with over 5 minutes to go after scoring 29 points.  TJ Hawes was a wizard with the ball while scoring 23 for the Cougars.

Not televised in the Portland area was PU's OT win over LMU, and UOP kept USD's win column at 1 (their win over the Pilots) as they beat the Toreros in Stockton.

On 2/6,
GU kept rolling, 85-67 over LMU
PU had a big game against SCU 91-77
UOP went to USF and shocked them 60-48; USF scored 13 in the first half
SMC ground out a win at USD 66-60.

PU has looked like the odd man out in the battle to stay out of the bottom four; their overall record is worse than SCU, USF and UOP's are. But they are now 6-4 in conference and a game ahead of USF and SCU. And only a game behind BYU and SMC.

This was an excellent game to watch, as the Toreros led by as much as 7 points during the last 10 minutes of the game before succumbing to some wild and crazy shots by SMC.

Two things:
1. As much as I dislike Coach Bennett's personality and demeanor on the sidelines, I admire the way he takes the time to teach and encourage, even if he does scorch a player from time-to-time.

(One of my criticisms of Coach Porter is the time he spends during a game criticizing the officiating instead of teaching/developing his student-athletes).

2. USD may be tied for last place with UP with a 1-9 record, but they were very, very good last night and may be finding their stride, finally.  UP plays at USD Saturday...the tie will be broken.  Rolling Eyes

I'm sure it will...enough with the Pollyanna outlook...fire Porter and dedicate the school to hiring a competent coach. Porter was never a good coaching the Pro's...ponder this!

Some guy named Clive Charles coached soccer in my high school league prior to... Well you know. I don't think college coaching experience is needed, but I do think a listing record at any level should be a disqualifier. The evidence Terry was not a good coach was available prior to his hiring. He was let go from multiple head coaching jobs after short stays. Major red flag.

I personally was quite disappointed we got Terry instead of Damon at the time and only get sorrierevery year...

Last Thursday, USF went to SCU and won, BYU handily beat LMU, and PU made a shot at the buzzer to beat USD.
Saturday, GU won at PU 89-77, LMU went to SCU and upset them 65-59, SMC beat UOP 71-63 with a strong first half, and BYU held on when USD missed a last second 72-71.

SCU falls the 7th, and SMC moves a 1/2 game ahead of UOP for 3rd/4th, with PU one game behind UOP. No drama for 1st or last place.
