Re: 2019 Season
In full agreement regarding Selma Licina. Lots of hustle, tenacious, good with the ball at her feet. I also look forward to seeing her play more.

Re: 2019 Season
In this year's preseason poll the coaches are picking BYU and SCU to fight it out for the championship:
Team (First Place Votes), Points
T1. BYU (5), 77
T1. Santa Clara (5), 77
3. Pepperdine, 65
4. Portland, 47
5. Gonzaga, 44
6. San Francisco, 43
7. San Diego, 40
8. Loyola Marymount, 30
9. Saint Mary's, 18
From what we've seen, there's no way the coaches could leave Taryn Ries off the All-WCC preseason team, and they didn't!
This all-star team would probably be fun to watch...but only one defender and no goal keeper.
Name, Institution, Yr., Pos.
Joelle Anderson, Pepperdine, Jr., M/F
Mikayla Colohan, Brigham Young, Jr., M
Elise Flake, Brigham Young, Sr., F
Kelcie Hedge, Santa Clara, R-Jr., F
India Jencks, Gonzaga, R-Sr., M
Alex Loera, Santa Clara, Jr., M
Miciah Madison, San Francisco, Sr., F
Milan Moses, San Diego, R-Sr., M
Isabel Nelson, Pepperdine, So., D
Taryn Ries, Portland, Jr., F
Kelsey Turnbow, Santa Clara, Jr., F

And we play both at home. If this team comes together as the season goes on, that could be an advantage in challenging the favorites.

Opener at UW
I see that tomorrow's match at UW will be televised on the PAC-12 network. I don't subscribe to any of the several services that carry the PAC-12 network. Is anyone aware of a local public venue that would carry the UP-UW match tomorrow? Thanks.

Re: 2019 Season
Not sure you'll be able to find the game in the Portland area...it depends whether a local public venue subscribes to a provider that will carry the game on the Pac-12 Washington Network.UPWomenSoccerRookie wrote:I see that tomorrow's match at UW will be televised on the PAC-12 network. You can check the UW website for ways to watch the game: https://pac-12.com/womens-soccer/event/2019/08/23/portland-washington
I'm a Comcast subscriber, and in the Portland area and SW Washington Comcast provides Pac-12 Oregon, but the game is on Pac-12 Washington.
At 7pm Pac-12 Oregon is inexplicably showing the Iowa State @ UCLA game live, and at 9:30 the Long Beach St @ Arizona game in a repeat, and then finally at midnight and 4am you can watch the UP at UW game tape delayed.
If you can't find the women's game, the men are playing at Merlo at 7...

Re: 2019 Season
The question was about watching the game on TV at a "local public venue," but UPWomenSoccerRookie could watch the game on his or her phone at the local pub, I guess.ejjqb wrote:Like I said, it will livestream on pac-12.com according to the website.
If you do, tell us how it works out. As I recall, Pac-12.com was a subscription service when I lived in the Portland area, and it was difficult to get UP games when they were playing outside Oregon.
At the "local' in Puerto Rico tonight the drinkers laughed pretty long and hard at Trump's apparent wish to trade PR for Greenland...but 100% of those polled seemed to be in favor of it. "Caribbean Vikings" the locals were calling themselves. Funniest of all was when, after a few drinks, everyone was trying to pronounce the new words they would have to learn while using a Spanish to Danish dictionary.
(As you can imagine, Trump is not favored here after he's voiced, on multiple occasions, his opposition to fund hurricane recovery efforts in PR and considered diverting hurricane relief funds to build a border wall.)

WCC pre-season stars
Mikayla Colohan of BYU on the pre-season WCC all-star list is the cousin of former UP & BYU star Cloee Colohan.

Re: 2019 Season
Pilots tie the Huskies at UW, 0-0. That's a good start against a team I had favored to win; and playing a double OT game probably provided good experience for a team with a whole bunch of new players. I haven't had a chance to look and see who played.
Re: 2019 Season
Frenchie started an experienced lineup except for three freshman at very important positions...GK, F, and D, and the six subs were three seniors, a freshman, and two transfers...one a senior and one a junior.UPSoccerFanatic wrote:Pilots tie the Huskies at UW, 0-0. IMO the defense was stellar, including the play of freshman GK Jenny Whalen (she played professionally in Sweden for a couple of years), but the offense did not look cohesive at the forward positions even with Taryn Ries' usual fine play while being closely marked.
UP's passing and control of the ball was generally good against a very physical UW side, so I'm not sure why UP seemingly wanted to go over the top even though UW was already in retreat and ready to stop the long ball.
Second double-overtime in a row for UW, the first one resulting in a 1-0 win over Gonzaga (picked to finish 5th in the WCC to UP's 4th).

. The fifa world only distingushes whether you are an amateur by if you received benefits beyond schooling, lodging and expenses or not, the same as any NCAA or youth national team player. The difference is fifa doesn’t care who else is on the team. It’s only your contract that counts.
If she accepted pay beyond that, she is NCAA ineligible.

Yeah, the rules are pretty clear for college soccer, same as for "professional" basketball players from Australia and Europe who play NCAA ball like Haylee Andrews does for UP WBB.Geezaldinho wrote:DD wrote:freshman GK Jenny Whalen (she played professionally in Sweden for a couple of years)

Regarding Whalen, I lazily quoted Frenchie, who said, "she played professionally for a couple of years," instead of writing, "she played on a professional team for a couple of years."
Jenny will be 21 years-old this coming January...

Re: 2019 Season
Just watched the stream of New Mexico match. 1-0 to the Pilots, but a bit of a snatch and grab affair. UNM dominated the first half, with the Pilots (Ries) scoring on their first shot, and maybe on their first touch in the UNM penalty area. Goal was very well-taken off a nice cross.
UNM had a lot of possession and the ball was in the Pilot end most of the first half. The Pilots seemed late to every ball and often didn't close down quickly. An opponent with more technical ability would have taken advantage, but UNM was not that opponent.
The second half was a little more even and the Pilots did very well to kill off the game late.
A good result surely, but I didn't see much to give me hope that Sunday's match with UNC will be anything but a bloodbath.

Re: 2019 Season
I agree, it was not a pretty game. But, New Mexico has been on a gradual rise under its coach, who has been there since 2015. I had this game statistically pegged as a tie, with a silght edge to the Pilots. So, in the end, good to get the win.
Re: 2019 Season
Nice win over Denver today against a team that is pretty good and beat Texas 3-0 last week. Nice goals from Kim Hazlett and freshmanMC Rowe off a good through ball from Taryn Reís. Reís also got the first assist.
The only Denver Goal was an own goal headed backwards. Some of the freshmen are looking like they will make significant contributions.

Up brings back a tie from Eugene.
UP scores were from Hazlett and Emily Collier.
UP had some dangerous chances in the second OT.

While scrolling through the channel menu for fantasy football viewing, I noticed the Pac-12 channel was broadcasting the UP-Cal game. The Pilots beat Bears 2-0, who were undefeated with 8 wins coming into the game.

Re: 2019 Season
Yup. I watched it. The Pilots were both good and lucky. They did well to hold possession for much of the match. They were under a lot of pressure during the last 2/3 of the first half, but didn't concede. The second half they really played well, with a nice goal from Jamie Rita, heading in a lovely cross from Ries all by herself at the far post. Then with Cal pressing forward, Rachel Khaw got in alone on the keeper, hit the post, and then reacted first to the rebound to finish into the open net.
Excellent weekend in the Bay Area!

Re: 2019 Season
Huge weekend on the road. After the OT win against San Jose State The Pilots played really well in the win against the undefeated and 21st ranked Cal Bears.
And they did it as the second game of the weekend. The larger roster is paying dividends.

Re: 2019 Season
Just an FYI, the Pilots are #28 in this week's RPI rankings. I think that will change and they'll descend a fair amount, but it's pretty darned good.
Re: 2019 Season
Curious to learn what others thought of last night's game against Gonzaga.
I was able to see some of it online, and it seemed the Pilots were just kept shot-gunning away at the goal, but only one or two came close.
GU beat USD 6-0 the other night, and USD came back to beat SMC 5-0 last night, so I guess UP's defense was good, but the foul in the box that gave GU the PK seemed stupid.
