2022 Offseason

The OSAA 6A basketball tournament is happening at Chiles this week.  Saw this comment.

Last note - it’s so fresh to see Coach Legans, his entire staff and a number of the players front center for all of the games, they really get it.

Yes, I was mistaken in writing that he was not eligible to transfer, forgetting that he had come from a JUCO to Portland.

It was pretty clear he was not going to get playing time at UP, so he is using his first 4-year school to 4-year school transfer and will be eligible immediately.  

I am told he has already garnered interest from Big West schools that like his moves and altitude...

This is cool, walk-on Wyatt Watson has entered the portal.

And why not?  He graduates on May 1, and he's really a good player who just rarely played except during practice.

He played a few minutes against New Orleans and looked very quick and athletic at 6-9/210.

He's an excellent student and he's got 2 years of eligibility remaining. Hey, why not have someone pay for your graduate school!

Silviera, now Watson. Both big men. We won't look as impressive in the airports now. Good luck to Wyatt.

Well, with Wyatt's graduation and that of Miles Turner, both on May 1.

Not on the roster, but Griffin Waller, Director of Athletic Performance, game to UP the same time Porter did, but I wouldn't call him part of the "Porter regime."

Yaru obviously did not have the patience, and really, who can blame him!

He is a talented young guard who should fit well somewhere on the west coast, I suspect.

I also suspect he will not be the last Pilot to enter the portal this offseason.

Not a surprise the Skylar and Nik are in the portal...but I will be surprised if anyone else enters unless it is to return to their native country, but that wouldn't normally need a portal entry.

So how many open scholarships are there? I count the current roster at 7 scholarship players and two walk-ons.
Two guards, both with physical issues: Austin, Meadows
Six forwards: Robertson, Wood, Sjolund, Nduka (W), Svetozarevic, Lemke (W)
One center: Vucinic

Seems guards and big men top the needs list.

At the end of the season there were 12 scholarship players on the roster, and by my count there are now 4 open scholarships to build the team for the future.

Yes, one or two big men for sure.

The team needs a 6-10/240-250 kind of guy who can take up space, block the occasional shot, and grab rebounds.  

Another mobile forward who can rebound and shoot from distance and mid-range should also be on the menu.

I agree, the team might be a little thin at guard with Meadows' status questionable and Gorosito coming in as freshman.  Although, as previously mentioned, Tyler at the point with his size advantage worked pretty well.

So is this the position list?

I’m with Deaner on this one. It’s a big deal for these players to be D1 scholarship guys. Chika deserves that honor. Give the kid the scholarship. Plus we could get one of those walk on scholarship videos. Those get me every time.

Big news on Twitter today is that Pilots guard Quincy Ferebee has entered the portal.

What year is it again?

The season is not over yet (at least for 4 teams), and there are over 1,000 players already in the portal.

I caught a bit of Kelly Graves on the Canzano radio show today. He has three sophomores who've entered the portal (there are over 900 women in the portal!). He said that now you need to recruit the high school players, then the JC players, then the portal players, and you need to re-recruit the players already on your team.

6'4" G with 2 seasons to play. Had the most min/game for the Eagles last year, almost 34. Has played in 95 games averaging 29 minutes/game in his career; very experienced. Averaged 8.1 ppg.
