"Bobby is a rising star in our industry," Legans said. "He is an extremely hard worker, elite recruiter and a great offensive tactician. More importantly, he gets the most out of our players. They respect him and he knows how to balance accountability and encouragement."

Sitting across from the bench as I do, it is obvious Bobby has the in-game ear and attention of the players as he explains a better way to do something or reinforces what the players are doing well.

He deserves his new title, and hopefully a salary bump that comes with it...

But who is the guy in the picture that accompanied the article Razz Question

It must be a great job of photo-shopping to put Bobby in a coat and tie without his trademark haircut... Laughing

Cal basketball stinks. Cal bball coach is entering year 4 of 5 having not performed to this point. We all know Coach can coach and seems inevitable he jumps to a Power conference soon. Collision course.
Cal fired their head coach, Mark Fox, today.

I have talked about the Cal job with Shantay in the past, and as I recall, his speculation was the frontrunners for the Cal job were the coaches at UCSB and UCD...I think. scratch

I always thought Legs to Cal was a great and natural fit as he played there and they were always trending towards this reality of needing to hire a coach this offseason. As the Pilots struggled maybe more than expected this year (Side Note: wild how successful Legs' first year was to create the expectations we had for, literally, the Portland Pilots this year), maybe that helps with retaining Legs/keeping Cal's interest down.

Further, though, the more I think about it, the more I think why in the heck would somebody want to go coach Cal? Pac12/Power 5, yes. Anything else? Not really. No facilities, no support, no hope in my eyes.

P.S. Then again, this was essentially what people told Legans about Portland..

Shantay - and family both on the Court and at home
You are doing a marvelous job at UP. Please stay. Double please!
Season tickets holder for several years and got a few more to also “vying.” I am not a scholar of the game. Never will be.
But the team excitement and the fans. OMG! What a 180 degree difference.
We didn’t win as many as we - and you - wanted but we were competitive —- and will be better next year!
The school needs to “market “ the program and the butts need to fill all the seats.
But you are doing it - Thank You- and Please Stay!

Exactly!! And this is basically what Shantay told me recently after Cal was attempting to contact him.

The latest rumor is Cal is expected to sign Kennesaw St. coach Amir Abdur-Rahim or LMU's Stan Johnson.  Abdur-Rahim's record with the Owls is 45-74, so  scratch .

I am a BIG fan of Coach Johnson and would like to see him remain at LMU where his record is 43-39, but sometimes the money is just too difficult to pass up.

From John Canzano:

John Canzano wrote:Mark Madsen was named WAC Coach of the Year after another 20-win season.
A few more things…

• CAL HIRE: Mark Madsen has emerged as the leading candidate for the vacant Cal men’s basketball job. He’s currently coaching Utah Valley who is playing in Tuesday’s semifinals of the NIT.

Cal’s athletic department is a mess and support of the basketball program reflects that. Athletic director Jim Knowlton and university leadership haven’t adequately supported the revenue-generating sports. It should come as no surprise that those programs haven’t flourished.

Former Bears coach Ben Braun did a nice job of working around Cal’s administration to foster 1-on-1 relationships with some key university gift givers (See: the Levi Strauss empire and the Goldman family). That’s partly why I like Madsen for the Cal job. He knows how to win and would connect with those same high-value donors. Madsen could pull Call out of its death spiral.

I watched Madsen last night in Utah Valley's NIT game and was impressed with the play of his guys at both ends of the floor.

And he can recruit...and not just from the Rocky Mountain area.

Madsen played at Stanford 1996-2000, and Eric Reveno was an assistant at Stanford beginning in 1997.

Reveno was born and raised in the Bay Area, and it would not surprise me if he would like to live there again.

Just speculating...

UT-Arlington's KT Turner is hiring Portland assistant Jeremy Pope as an assistant coach, source tells @SInow.

Pope has also spent time at AZ Compass Prep, Orangeville Prep and Washington.

That's a recent tweet of his. Hopefully this is a promotion move up from 3rd assistant for him. Coach Turner is a new head coach at UTA, most recently an assistant at Kentucky.

I am told Coach Pope's move from UP was in the cards for a while, but the mid-March hiring of Turner at UT-A and his knowledge of Pope sealed the deal.

Coach Legans apparently has someone in mind for the 3rd assistant spot, but with the new NCAA rules allowing an increase of two coaches in men's and women's basketball, including the DOBO position, it is difficult to predict what course UP will follow, especially when it comes to financial considerations.

These additional coaches may engage in coaching activities but may not recruit off campus. The rule change simply codified a waiver in those sports that allowed noncoaching staff members to engage in skill instruction under specific circumstances.

So, does he bring in a brash up-and-comer, or a seasoned veteran, or both?

Most of us will remember the short tenure of Herb Brown when Rev was the coach.

Among his other dislikes, Herb disliked off campus recruiting, so perhaps a veteran who likes to stay home, like Herb did, would be a good fit for the new non-recruiting coach position(s).

I doubt any veteran would want the DOBO position just because there is a lot of NCAA compliance detail the DOBO must oversee, and he or she generally supervises the student-manager(s).

Surely by now an extension has been negotiated and signed, right?

There it is.

Portland is finalizing a new contract that will run through the 2027-28 season with coach Shantay Legans, source told @Stadium.

Legans has won 33 games the last two season and 12 in WCC play.

Program had won total of 37 games in previous four years and just seven in league.
