Yea, because UConn is ineligible for the post-season due to the team's academic problems, Smith sould play for the Rebels this (coming) season, but UNLV will have to submit a waiver to the NCAA on his behalf to make it a reality -- it should be a no-brainer.mattywizz wrote:Roscoe Smith is now headed from UConn to UNLV. Smith started for UConn during their title run I believe. The Rebs are gonna be pretty tough this year.

December 4, to be exact.oldtimer wrote:That is going to make for a great game in the Chiles Center early December.
The Rebels have a strong core back for this (coming) season -- they'll be led by Mike Moser, Anthony Marshall and Justin Hawkins, and now UConn transfer Roscoe Smith and transfers Bryce Jones (USC) and Khem Birch (Pittsburgh). And as if that were not enough they bring in a strong freshman class led by Anthony Bennett and Katin Reinhardt.
That seems like a team that could make a deep run in the NCAA tournament and be a nice December draw in the Chiles Center.

The Strong get Stronger
From various sources:
Gerard Coleman will transfer from Providence of the Big East to Gonzaga. The 6-foot-4 shooting guard averaged more than 13 points as a sophomore, but became disenchanted as the season wore on. Following the season, he requested a transfer from the school. Coleman visited Gonzaga and Xavier, before deciding to land in Spokane. Coleman will be eligible beginning with the 2013-14 season.

Another SG Transfers to Gonzaga
Gonzaga just picked up 6-7, 195-pound SG Drew Barham, transferring in from Memphis University. Barham just completed his redshirt year at Memphis, will graduate early from Memphis in August, will be immediately eligible to play, and has TWO years remaining.

No doubt about it......the 2014 transfers list, about 625 student- athletes changing schools, is a new record. Grad transfers and waivers to play instantly are a part of the increased numbers, but a lot of players changed schools just looking for a better situation.....apparently.

Yep. Octeus to UCLA when he would have been starting PG for CSU. Even though CSU should be loaded this year. Frustrating.

Octeus is also the projected starter at UCLA as he's the only true PG on the Bruins' roster this year.pilotram wrote:Yep. Octeus to UCLA when he would have been starting PG for CSU. Even though CSU should be loaded this year. Frustrating.
Funny, he's actually replacing Matt Carlino in that role in each player's graduate year. Of course Carlino left UCLA for BYU and is now playing his final year at Marquette.

West Coast Convo has a WCC transfer list. If it's accurate, UP and USD are the only schools in the conference that didn't have a player transfer out of the program this year.

Re: NCAA D-1 Men's Basketball Transfer List (so far)
Schools like GU, BYU, and SMC are probably not concerned about the players that transferred-out as they were going to see little or no playing time anyway.....well, except for Carlino, of course.
All three schools have transfers coming in who will be instant starters or big contributors off the bench.
Just looking at GU, the addition of Nunez (Louisville), Wiltjer (Kentucky), McClellan (Tulsa & Vandy), and Wesley (USC) over the last two years make the Bulldogs a possible Top-10 team this coming season.
I believe UP considered a few transfers, but as the team is top-heavy with seniors, it made no sense to add another like Desmond Simmons, who transferred from UW to SMC. The free addition of JUCO walk-on Max Livingston was probably as good as it could get for the Pilots as the team really needed to bring in some underclassmen on scholarships....Tyson, Todd, Taylor, and Hartwich.

Re: NCAA D-1 Men's Basketball Transfer List (so far)
Supposedly, graduate transfers such as Simmons are only able to avoid sitting out a year if they are transferring to take advantage of a graduate course of study not available at their previous school.
I wonder what graduate program Simmons found at SMC (graduate enrollment 2,000) that was not available at UW (13,700).
Could UP's modest graduate offerings (540 enrollment) hamper the basketball team's ability to attract graduate transfers?

At the graduate level schools, especially smaller ones, can taylor a degree to a student's needs.
And I'll bet UW doesn't have anything in Lasalian or Christian Brothers studies.
As far as UP goes, I'm pretty sure they can find two courses that would interest a graduate trying to extend a college basketball career. Ask VDM.

It's usually a good idea to make sure you're admitted to a school before you transfer in. Just a minor issue.

Re: NCAA D-1 Men's Basketball Transfer List (so far)
Add Mark Tollefsen of USF to the transfer list. That's a major blow for the Dons. He would have been their best player next year.
Another intriguing transfer... 7'0" center Gilles Dierickx, leaving UW as a graduate transfer. He had previously transferred from Florida International.

Yeah, it's pretty easy to be intrigued by a 7-0/230 center considering UP's apparent needs, but the big guy from Belgium just hasn't been impressive in his college career.....so far.NoPoNeighbor wrote:Another intriguing transfer... 7'0" center Gilles Dierickx, leaving UW as a graduate transfer. Without seeing Dierickx, it's pretty difficult to evaluate him, but his 1ppg average and shooting percentage of less than 30% doesn't indicate he's a front line performer considering he only has 1 year to go in his college career.
Admittedly, Philipp's numbers are probably not a lot better, but he has time to develop and grow.....plus everybody really likes Philipp....

Why not? Well, because Smith has become accustomed to playing in the NCAA tournament for Harvard. Why would you leave a program with an excellent shot of making the NCAA tournament every year, for one that has almost zero chance of making it?DoubleDipper wrote:Another update....this one from ESPN.

Although it's apparently online, maybe this will be added incentive for grad student to transfer to UP for one more year of basketball....

Of interest to WCC fans, the top three transfer prospects are all considering heading to Gonzaga.
Also, USF's Tollefsen is rated #11 and LMU's Payne at #14.
Yes, Dorian is on the list.
