2023 WCC Tournament
In the opening game of the tournament, #8 SCU lead #9 PU 59-54 with 2-1/2 minutes to go. They had basically led the whole game. Then PU outscored them 9-1 to win 63-60.

In game two, #7 SMC met #10 LMU. LMU won both regular season games. But SMC blew them out in the second quarter, played the third even, then ran away in the fourth for a 74-43 win. Gaels were led by Sr. Taycee Wedin from Milwaukie, who scored 25 points.

After pulling one out against SCU, PU faced BYU. The Cougars did not give them the chance of a late game steal. Gustin had 23 pts and 18 rbs, and Falatea had 23 pts to power BYU to the 74-59 win.

After an inept third and half the fourth quarters, SMC's late game rally fell short and UOP advanced with a 82-77 win.

USF-BYU game is not over yet, but the announcers are highlighting several questionable officiating calls. Bot a good look for women's basketball.
Also, Guston is imitating Rodman. 1-13 shooting with 27 rebounds.

We know who the Pilots will play on Monday: the Pacific Tigers.
In a game filled with turnovers (41 total), #6 UOP beat #3 USD 71-57. The Toreros struggled to hit shots, going 17-55 (31%). UOP shot 54% from 2P range (only 2-12 on 3Ps). They also dominated rebounds, 40-23.

Re: 2023 WCC Tournament
USD had beaten UOP twice during regular season play but tonight the Tigers led the entire way despite blowing at least five easy “bunnies.”
USD was the taller of the two teams but U0P was much scrappier and fought harder for every ball.
It was interesting that “flopping” was called twice and no one questioned it. I was told in no uncertain terms twice during the season by referees that there is no flopping call in the women’s game.

In the two previous games against UOP, the Pilots won by 14 in Stockton and by 11 at Chiles. UOP shot poorly in each game (39% in the first and 29% in the 2nd) and was a combined 5-21 from 3P in the games.
In the first game Alex had 20 points, and Maisie and Emme had 20 and 18, each hitting 4 3P shots. In the second game five players had 8 to 12 points. and despite only shooting 39% and 3-12 on 3P, they did enough for the win.

Its not listed in the NCAAs WBB season rule changes, only for the men as recomended by the mens rules committee. Might be one for the coaches / Scott to be aware of to ensure it is clarified pre-game so they dont get the same refs and it gets called against us when up 1 with in last play of the game no doubt /

Re: 2023 WCC Tournament
Yet another story at Oregonlive discussing Monday's game and suggesting Pacific will be a formidable opponent though we have beaten then twice. The excerpt alludes to Fowler's not winning POY.
This is the best chance UP has had since 2020. The 21 wins is the program’s most since the 1996-97 season. The Pilots swept the WCC season series from seven of their nine foes. They have forward Alex Fowler, only the second player in school history to score 2,000 career points.
Portland positioned itself for a run. By finishing second, the Pilots avoided all the preliminary tournament games that Pacific and BYU, which plays Gonzaga in Monday’s other semifinal, had to play. They’re fresh and ready to attempt to win two games.
In Fowler, the Pilots have a marquee talent. The 6-foot-2 Aussie — one of 10 players from Australia or New Zealand on UP’s roster — was the WCC’s co-scoring leader at 17.6 points a game this season. Fowler is as experienced as any in the conference, with 118 starts, 3,551 minutes, 2,070 points and 858 rebounds during her career.
That Fowler wasn’t the WCC player of the year rankled the Pilots.
“I don’t think anybody in this league over her time has impacted like she has,” Meek said. “She has the right to be disappointed, and I’m sure she is. I would imagine she’s motivated by that, but more than that, the great thing about Alex is she’s always more motivated about the team winning and trying to get back and win this tournament.”
Portland’s chances took a blow five weeks ago when Andrews was lost with a knee injury. Her loss is no small matter, as Andrews is a first-team all-WCC guard and a superior playmaker. But this is the second go-round for Portland having to play without Andrews. She missed most of last season and the first eight games of this season recovering from her first ACL tear.
“It allowed us some other kids to get experience,” Meek said. “Now we have a little more confidence coming into this situation.”

Let's hope tomorrow goes well.

Re: 2023 WCC Tournament
The team and coaches were very relaxed and having fun at practice today. The WCC, as one would expect, is very rigid with the practice schedules for the eight remaining teams in the Tournament. The Pilots were on the court at 12:10 and the horn went off for them to leave an hour later as the GU women's team ran onto the court.
Besides Haylee, it would appear Emily will be the only player that will have to sit this one out due to injury.
Lots of parents of players in town...many from Australia.

Nothing is easy in March, huh?
A spotty performance like that though, especially in the second half, definitely won't work against the Zags.
Good on the team for letting Haylee be the bracket sticker rep.

Survived!
I thought UOP played a great game. The Pilots' struggles from 3P range (5-21) allowed the Tigers to pack the paint. They forced 6 turnovers on the first 7 possessions of the 2nd half, and dominated rebounds, 38-25. Thought I was watching the men as UOP got 16 offensive rebounds. 63% shooting from 2P (24-38) and 12-13 on free throws was just enough for the women to squeak past them.

I only caught most of the 4th quarter, but the defense looked good and forced several turnovers. I was surprised to see the Pilots down 60-57 when I started watching, but they got quite a few fast break points from turnovers to take the win.

UOP is very good when they are healthy, and they are finally healthy again!up7587 wrote:I thought UOP played a great game.
The Tigers had won 8 out of their last 10 games coming into today's game, and there only losses were to UP and GU. The Pilots didn't overlook them or look ahead to the championship game against GU.
During the postgame hubbub the players became very emotional when talking about winning the next one for the true leader of the team, Haylee, after she was denied the NCAA Tournament in 2020 by COVID.
WCC Hall of Honor inductee, Lorena Legarde, met with and inspired the women before and after today's game. Just walking with Alex and Lorena and listen to them talk about then and now should be a mandatory college course for aspiring WBB players.

The O-live stories continue. Regarding Alex's effort:
The 6-foot-2 Fowler, one of five players to score 2,000 career points in WCC history, used the player of the year snub as motivation. She wasn’t alone.
“Portland got overlooked for a few different awards,” Fowler said. “I think we’ve always been overlooked the last four years (with) how much we achieved.”
Portland coach Michael Meek wouldn’t even go as far as to say Monday’s performance was Andrews’ best game of the season. He’s seen too many like it.
“The amazing thing about Alex is she’s so selfless,” he said. “She doesn’t want to be a scorer. She wants to be a great teammate. Everybody loves playing with her.”
Case in point was Monday. Fowler scored 29 points, but she took only 14 shots. During the fourth quarter, Fowler twice took a shot with the shot clock expiring. The results: a three-pointer and a three-point play.
Perhaps Fowler’s biggest play of the game came on defense. Trailing 75-72, Pacific had the ball with 25 seconds in search of a game-tying three. The Tigers put the ball into the hands of Liz Smith, their point guard and best shooter. Fowler, the forward, took on Smith, backing her off the three-point line, forcing indecision. By the time Pacific was able to work into its offense, most of the time had expired, and the Tigers were only able to launch a desperation heave that missed the mark.
“We talk about all the No. 1 leading scorer and field goal percentage, but she’s phenomenal defender,” Meek said. “Here she is guarding their point guard at the end of the game … it just shows how many things that she does.”
It includes this discussion about the game today, quoting Alex from the post game press conference:
Portland will not lack motivation Tuesday when it plays 16th-ranked Gonzaga. The Pilots lost both regular season games to the Zags, though both were competitive into the second half. Also, four players on Portland’s current roster were part of the 2020 team that lost an NCAA tourney berth because of historic circumstances.
“We have a chip on our shoulder,” Fowler said. “This is a game for many of our seniors, missing out on that tournament. This is something we’ve been working out for, for the last four years. Honestly, we finally have the right team to do it.”

Re: 2023 WCC Tournament
I attended the presser from which that story was written, and it was Mike, Maisie, and Alex representing the Pilots.
To say it was an emotional time would be an understatement because of the underlying bitterness of being overlooked in the WCC awards, but it was also tearful and positive emotion when talking about the team "doing this for Haylee."
Ann Schatz was at the presser and was doing her always diligent note taking and making her post-it-note collection in preparation for calling today's championship game. She's an absolute gem!!
