2022 Schedule

Adding to his WCC Player of the Week award yesterday, Portland Pilots men's soccer forward CJ Tibbling was named to the TopDrawerSoccer Team of the Week.

Important win over St. Mary's last night. The visitors made sure it was not pretty and the referee miscalibrated what was needed to keep control. Not issuing cards in the first half gave license to an increasing level of physical play that threatened to get out of control in the second. That led to a flurry of yellow that might have been avoided with one or two in the first half.

Unfortunate that Denley ended up with two bookings for relatively innocuous fouls and forced the Pilots into a tough situation over the last 20 minutes. I didn't see the first and the second was obviously misconduct, but simply not something that you do when you are on a yellow.

Good effort by the boys to see the match out and defuse SMC's (at times literally) furious attempts at an equalizer. Given the last 30 minutes, it seems like 2 or 3 gained points relative to what might be expected.

I hate to be a DoulbleDowner, but to me, men's soccer is becoming less enjoyable because of the number of fouls and the resulting lengthening of the game to well over 2 hours.

Last I looked at the scoreboard last evening there were over 40 fouls called, 70% of which were on SMC. Although the referee may have miscalculated by calling fewer fouls in the first half, it certainly made for a more free-flowing and faster game compared to the second half which was way too choppy and chippy.

SMC entered the game with an RPI of #116 (UP was #23), but they are a well-coached team, and it is significant to note that it was the first time the Pilots had beaten the Gaels since 2016 when UP prevailed at home, 1-0.

Next up, a very tough match at USF that, as of this morning, has just one loss before playing at LMU tonight. Just two regular season home games left for UP, LMU on 10/22 and SCU on 11/5...it's a tough road ahead.

Schedule Update:

Oregon State has announced that its game vs. Portland has been moved to Friday Oct. 14 at 7 p.m. The match was initially slated to be played on Saturday Oct. 15.

Admission to the match is free with no ticket required.

I wonder when OSU figured out there is a football game across the the road at Reser starting at 5:00 and there wouldn’t be access or parking at the soccer stadium?

Back to conference, which just became more important.

It was a GREAT fall evening for soccer last night as the Pilots downed the Lions 4-0.  Finally, a chill in the air, a few light sprinkles, and a good turnout of fans despite it being Fall Break for the students.
