With a chance at the NBA Championship on the line for Boston and Miami beginning with the Eastern Conference finals tonight in Beantown, there is obviously a lot of talk about Erik Spoelstra, but another Portland Pilot is also a big factor in this series, Celtics top assistant, Ben Sullivan.

A Lake Oswego High grad, a player at UP, and later an assistant on The Bluff, Sullivan has had successful stints with San Antonio and Atlanta before winning the NBA Championship at Milwaukee in 2021...and now he could add another ring to his resume'.

At age 39, Ben certainly has a chance to be a head coach one day, but the rumor is he is going to get a big raise and head to the Houston Rockets to join former Celtics coach, Ime Udoka, who was recently hired there.

Throw in former SMC Gael and Westview HS grad Garrett Jackson you have a lot of 503 flavor along side departing Stoudamire and Sullivan

No historic comeback for Boston. After losing the first three games, they won three in a row to set up being the first NBA team to win a series after down 3-0. But Coach Spoelstra's Miami team dominated the entire game, and advance to the NBA final against the Denver Nuggets.

With Miami's win, the #8 seed Heat have to face the overall #1 seed Denver Nuggets that demolished the Western Conference behind the play of Nikola Jokic.

The only tie between UP/Erik/Denver I could find (and it's ridiculously slight) is Erik's dad, Jon, was the President and GM at Denver while Erik was the UP-point guard.

Making it even more slight, Jon was only with the Nuggets for 90 days before quitting over a "dispute with management."  (Seems like if you are the president and general manager you are management, but oh well  Rolling Eyes ).

That's great news!!

Pooh, mostly recently playing on Las Vegas, has often told UP President Rob Kelly and Coach Legans, "let me know how I can help the university."  So, it should be a good relationship.

Back in January, Pooh was talking about moving into "coaching and the front office" while helping develop NBA prospects as a member or the NBA G Leage Ignite.

NBA G League Ignite is a first-of-its-kind team dedicated to developing top young prospects in preparation for the NBA Draft. Based in Henderson, Nevada, the roster includes elite players who are eligible for the NBA Draft as well as NBA and NBA G League veterans who serve as mentors to the team’s young talent.

Interesting fact: Forty-seven percent of the players on start-of-season NBA rosters had NBA G League experience when the 2022-23 season tipped off last October.

Porter named Assistant Basketball Coach at Denver...

No, not that Porter...it's BJ Porter, the onetime popular Pilot who played sparingly during his two years on The Bluff, 2007-2009.

Well, good for David, whose niece is on the women's basketball team and whose sister played basketball at UP.

David?  He attended UP for a couple of years, but I believe he finally graduated from PSU.

"Former Portland Pilots, Oregon prep star?"  Not so fast!

It is my understanding that David was a pretty darn good intramural basketball player while at UP, so if that make you a "star," there are probably a lot of folks who could add "star" to their resume'. Razz

But no, David did not play varsity basketball at UP but that shouldn't stop us from taking pride in him "attending" UP after he lands an NBA head coaching position.

Thanks for clearing that up. I saw a similar comment a couple weeks ago, and looked for Adelman's stat info, but was unable to locate it. Now I know why.

Watched some of the Wizards vs. Hawks NBA Summer League game yesterday and saw T-Rob sitting at the end of the Washington bench and Moses in the middle of the Atlanta bench.

Neither played, but I've been told each will eventually get in a game.

Based upon my Comcast TV schedule, here are the next three games for each team:

Wizards (T-Rob):
July 14 @ 3 on ESPN2 vs. Houston Rockets
July 16 @ 6 on NBA Channel vs. Portland Trail Blazers
July 18 @ 4 on ESPN vs. Sacramento Kings

Hawks (Moses):
July 14 @ 5 on ESPN2 vs. San Antonio Spurs
July 17 @ 6:30 on ESPN vs. LA Lakers
July 19 @ 3 on NBA Channel vs. Chicago Bulls

After not playing in the first of five Hawks games, Moses played more than 20 minutes in the next four, and after not playing in any of the Wizards first four games, T-Rob finally saw action in the team's final game yesterday.

The Summer League is full of bouncy, athletic young men trying to find a place with an NBA team, but the majority seemed intent on putting on one-man shows from outside the arc.

The Hawks went 0-5 in Summer League, but Moses looked good and was in rhythm while making good passes and the occasional 3-pointer.

The Wizards were 3-2 this summer, and while T-Rob was a great cheerleader bouncing up off the bench and applauding his teammate's efforts, he did not get many looks in his only game while playing very good fundamental basketball and causing his opponents to take offensive charging fouls, but his teammates seemed more interested in lighting up the scoreboard while attempting 50 3-point shots in their final game.

From what I saw, I think Moses could find a spot with some team in the G League or Europe while T-Rob will be happy to be back home in Australia playing strong for the Sydney Kings.
