Re: 2016 Season
Quality loss? (borrowing from SEC speak down here)
Also, I guess the path to the tournament got slightly easier with the Harvard men's team being suspended. That kind of behavior is just flat out disappointing.

Although it's pretty much matched by one of our Presidential candidates. Seriously.

Re: 2016 Season
A win tonight means the Pilots win the WCC Championship and head to the NCAA Tournament with the automatic bid...
Game time is 7 o'clock at Merlo.
If you have a ticket from last night's basketball game you can gain free admission to the game.
Some will probably be watching the game in the comfort of the Pilot House on CSN, 737 in HD.

Re: 2016 Season
Pacific *must* win its game against Gonzaga tonight for them to have a chance at winning the title.
Interesting that the Pacific/GU game begins at 6PM, so the Pilots will know the result sometime during the second half, which is actually quite an advantage for us.

Re: 2016 Season
Also interesting is that St. Mary's would know the result of the Pacific/GU game. If Pacific wins, St. Mary's is eliminated--and will perhaps be less motivated. If Pacific does not win, St. Mary's knows that they can win the automatic bid by beating UP.
So would the Pilots prefer needing a win against a perhaps unmotivated St. Mary's team in the second half, or needing a tie against a very motivated St. Mary's team?

Re: 2016 Season
I personally know of no athlete who would give less than a 100% effort regardless of the "big picture" outcome...there's just too much personal and team pride to give less than a full effort.eProf wrote:Also interesting is that St. Mary's would know the result of the Pacific/GU game. It's the fans who tend to overanalyze the situation and be "up" or "down" for a match or game...

The real motivation is that the Pilots control their destiny.
Just win, baby.

Re: 2016 Season
Congrats to the men on a hard-fought victory.
If the banners at Merlo are correct, the Pilots won last won the WCC in 2002. That would have been Clive's final season. So Bill Irwin coached the team for 13 seasons without winning a title, but the team won the title in the year before and the year after his tenure. Correct?

Re: 2016 Season
I believe the Pilots Will host a first round game on Thursday. The most likely opponent is CSUN.

This would be fantastic. Any particular reason you think we'll host?

Re: 2016 Season
Well, largely a guess, but the men still have a 48 team tournament and the bottom 32 teams play in.
CSUN is the closest opponent in the West that wouldn't be a top 16 team.

Re: 2016 Season
Pacific is out. They are in our conference.
I figure UCLA, SDSU, UNLV, and New Mexico will be in a pool.
Like I said, it's my guess because they are closest.
Anybody going to the HOF room for the selection show?

...where the fans emulate the "Mexico" part of their heritage.
I wonder what they throw this time. It seems UP is the designated team to play in front of those fans. Let's see if we can disappoint them yet again.

Re: 2016 Season
Not many who can miss work or class to watch the Pilots live on Thursday, but after a win in Albuquerque, I've been told the Pilots will next go up I-5 to Seattle to play UW.
