Mexico over Brazil for gold... Empty Mexico over Brazil for gold...

Congrats to my wife´s paisanos in Mexico for their Olympic gold in men´s soccer over Brazil. What does this really mean for the US vs. Mexico National Team rivalry?

I´m not sure it means much of anything except for a lot of US jealousy. I think that the home team is going to continue to win the US vs. Mexico rivalry. Mexico showed that they have some rising stars to go along with Giovani dos Santos and Chicharito (who sat out the Olympics, I believe). The US also has a lot of reasons for optimism under Klinnsman, like beating the Italian team before they made the Euro Cup Final. If the players learn to be better finishers at the international level like some have become for their club teams (especially Dempsey and Hercules Gomez), there is a lot of reason for optimism. But, I think it could easily be argued that Mexico is better than us right now too...a more technical team with better finishers. I really don´t think we took the Olympics seriously though... Your thoughts?

How do you think the USA could have demonstrated they took the Olympics more seriously?...I mean other than qualifying.

It looks to me like we got out coached and outplayed.

The fact that Mexico won gold and Honduras reached the knockout stage leads me to believe maybe the CONCACAF qualifying was no slouch. Even with promising players like Agudelo and Shea (Who are both having VERY down years), there are still a lot of kinks to be worked out in the youth system, no small task, but one of the keys if Klinnsman is ever going to be successful. As for not taking it seriously? Not much they can do, they fielded their strongest teams possible, and they just got flat out beat in qualifying.

The biggest thing I learned from the men's tournament was that Gio dos Santos still plays in the Premiership. Laughing

Well, for one there was the roster:

http://www.ussoccer.com/teams/youth/us-under23-men/roster/2012-olympic-qualifying.aspx

These guys are simply not our best players, and many won´t be on the MNT for the next World Cup at all. Granted, maybe it needs to be close to U-23, but, I really think we could have done better. I think that there are some better U-23 players on the MNT roster that Klinnsman has assembled than these guys...but, maybe I´m wrong there...

Maybe someone could explain to me why there´s so little overlap between Klinnsman´s current team and these guys. The WNT that went to the Olympics and the team training for the next World Cup are pretty identical. Granted, there´s no WPS so they may have a little bit more free time... But, still, it really doesn´t make sense. These were not our best guys in my opinion...

Here are the players we´ll take to the friendly against Mexico on August 15th:

http://www.ussoccer.com/News/Mens-National-Team/2012/08/Klinsmann-Names-Roster-for-Aug-15-Friendly-Against-Mexico.aspx

Win or lose...it´s just a better team.

Uhhh those are our best U-23 players... And the Olympic tournament is U-23 (with 3 overage exceptions per team.), we couldn't have been any better than that...

The WNT looks identical for the World Cup and the Olympics because both are the full Senior team - no age limit.

The Mens Olympic team is strictly u23 for qualifiers. When the get to the Olympics, they can add 3 overage players.

I think that the men´s squad should go with no age limit as well for the Olympic competition...so that we can send talented players like Wondolowski. All the same, I still don´t like the roster at all. It seems like everytime I see Freddy Adu representing us, he disappoints.

FIFA would have to get clubs to agree to release their players for yet another international tournament and we both know how that will go over.

Not to mention a tournament the same 4 year cycle as the Euro Cup. Unless the IOC is willing to insure the contracts of all the players playing, flat out not happening...

I think he is saying no age limit for the US but maintain the age limit for everyone else. That way we have a chance to win/qualify.
