Re: Pilots vs CAL Northridge
Preparing for PKs in the NCAA Tournament. Give experience to those who will be taking them. I actually had this thought when they said Keelin was taking it.
To listen to their "homer" announcers, nothing was wrong with the kick. The keeper made a great save.

Re: Pilots vs CAL Northridge
At 2-1 you go with the best PK taker on the field. With a 2 goal lead maybe you give someone experience. IMHO.

I'll wait 'till we get a report from someone who has a clue. we aren't even sure she was on the pitch then. they credited her with Capelle's first goal

Just looking at the box on the CSUN site

did anybody get that McKluskie and Kelly were in the game from that broadcast?

I heard that Kelly came in late in the game, but didn't hear McKluskie's name

Re: Pilots vs CAL Northridge
I thought Garrett showed a lot of confidence by having McCluskie and then Kelly in at crunch time. We know we'll have some injuries and we need those backups as the year unfolds.
I thought the color guy paid quite a few compliments on Jessica for a D play and Keelin. They also commented that the whole CS-N bench was on their feet yelling. They made the comment Portland's bench was calm like they had been here before. You can't expect much more from the home team announcers then we got.
I heard that Kelly replaced #8 is what they said.

Yes, I heard the broadcaster mention both of them as being on the field. McKluskie may be been mentioned by number, but I remember thinking to myself "Oh, Kassi's out there".Geezaldinho wrote:

Re: Pilots vs CAL Northridge
the box says that Kassi came in for Cloee at the half, and Kelly came in for Kassi after their score. (76:34)

Reflecting on just the feeling of the game, since I didn't see it... it's good to get these experiences at the beginning of the season, rather than being almost entirely unprepared for them at the end.

Box score on Pilots site gives first goal to Taylor Brooke.
Write up and box score on Pilots site say that Taylor scored the first goal and Micaela the second.

Re: Pilots vs CAL Northridge
So now, going to the Pilots' website game article and box score, I find that Taylor Brooke scored the first goal and Micaela Capelle scored the second.
Kendall and Cloee rested during the second half. It sounds like Garrett is holding true to what he said about Friday and Sunday games. It's also a great way to keep the non-starters (per the Pilots' PA system) sharp: It's going to be up to you in some of these games!

Ha ha ha.
Those guys were clueless. they should stick to Hockey - even the Men's soccer coach.
Great job by Taylor and Micaela

Re: Pilots vs CAL Northridge
Even though they got the players all wrong (Dani is credited in the description as the scorer of the first goal, even though she wasn't in the game) , it looks like the two scores were from 7 and 6 yards out off crosses.
It looks like they might be on the right path to what Garrett wants them to do.
The preliminary posting on Portlandpilots had Micaela with both scores. Somebody down there must have seen it and had it changed.

Re: Pilots vs CAL Northridge
I watched the first game this morning (finally), and I thought Capelle was very effective, as was Brooke. I think we need their speed on the field. I am thinking Capelle might pair up very well with either/or Danielle and Hallie.
Danielle didn't look right to me - ill, or an injury.

Re: Pilots vs CAL Northridge
I took a look at the substitutions for the CS Northridge game:
25' Brooke for Cruz; Capelle for Foxhoven
31' Brooke goal (I note that the game box score still shows Capelle scoring the goal), Bridges for Johnson
44' Capelle goal
45' McCluskie for Colohan
58' CS Northridge goal
67' Foxhoven for Capelle; Cruz for Brooke; Johnson for Bridges
76' Kelly for McCluskie

Re: Pilots vs CAL Northridge
The Capelle->foxhoven sub is weird. Thats in a 0-0 game. Was Dani ever subbed out last season in a tie game?
To me, this means one of two things, either Garret really likes Capelle, or something is up with Dani, and with what I saw on friday, I'm leaning towards the second.
And I would be surprised to see both Dani and Capelle on the forward pairing at the same time. Last season, we suffered in front of overly-physical defenses, due to Dani's small size. Is Capelle any bigger?
edit: Capelle is smaller - 5-4 to Dani's 5-6.

Re: Pilots vs CAL Northridge
You know, one other pundit and I were watching the first practice, and we both said to each other- "boy, wouldn't it be great to stick her into games and have her just try and outrace everyone up the middle"
Do you suppose Garrett heard us?

Re: Pilots vs CAL Northridge
Speed at forward is brutal. Dani is quick but I wouldn't call her exceptionally fast. Without Michelle this year, we could use another player with speed.
I pretty well trust Garret to sort things out in terms of how to win. I'm more worried about Dani's health. I guess we won't know until we know.

Re: Pilots vs CAL Northridge
Capelle and Brooke are a pair of mighty mites -- 5-4 and 5-3 per the roster. Size isn't everything, as these two proved in this game. It will be fun to watch them be sparkplugs for the offense.

Here's an article on the game from the CSUN perspective, and a celebration of their first night under the lights from their newspaper, the Sundial.
http://sundial.csun.edu/2010/08/matadors-get-lost-under-the-lights/
It wasn't too long ago we had our first night Game at Merlo. Final preseason trivia question - who'd we play and who scored the first goal under the lights?

Yup.
She got the first goal on a PK after a takedown in the box.
The final tally was 2 goals from Christine and 2 from Lindsey Huie.

Good to see other schools beginning to spend some coverage on non-revenue generating sports.
From the article, it says the PK was awarded due to a handball in the box. For the referees in the forum, shouldn't a card have been issued? Wouldn't a PK be awarded after a clear goal scoring opportunity was stopped, and therefore call for at least a caution? I seem to recall inadvertant handball calls in the penalty area at Merlo resulting in indirect free kicks in the box (not on the spot). But this is going off of memory and it's been a few years.
