Re: It's Bowl Season!
I watched quite few of the bowls this year, and even attended one of them.
I found myself flipping the channels last night though. The game just wasn't that interesting.
I'd post more college football stuff, but I get tired of DTR's negative comments about the Ducks. Maybe someday when the Huskies have a decent team there will be some more back and forth on PN.

Re: It's Bowl Season!
Viewership was down for several reasons. First time on a cable network, i.e. fewer available homes. Monday night a full week after the holidays, people just forgot there was a game, or had to work, or were exhausted from watching Tebow on Sunday. An all SEC rematch, no cross regional interest, 'been there, done that' attitude. I watch a lot of college football, and frankly I find SEC games the least interesting to watch all season, no matter how much "Uncle Verne" Lundquist and Gary Danielson talk them up as the latest Armageddon.DoubleDipper wrote:My guess is you weren’t alone; TV ratings were down for this year’s game. Yesterday’s game on ESPN earned a 14.0 rating, down 8 percent from last year; it’s the second-lowest rating of the 14 BCS title games, beating only a 13.9 for Miami-Nebraska in 2002.DaTruRochin wrote:Hahaha to be perfectly honest I didn't even realize there was a game yesterday I've had so little time to pay attention to college football...
Was there another Republican Debate going on at the same time?
I’m thinking a field goal-filled shutout couldn’t compete with a thrilling finish for television viewers. Do you remember last year? Auburn drove for a winning field goal on the final play to beat Oregon 22-19

Psh, you don't like Super Tecmo Bowl style shootouts?

I was more interested in how many times Brent was going to call that guy Honey Badger. "Honey Badger better care about that one." You can't make this stuff up.

Re: It's Bowl Season!
Back to life! This thread, that is. The bowl season kicks of this Saturday, and the first two games feature Pac-12 teams. In fact, WSU faces CSU in the initial game, the New Mexico Bowl. Can the pirate take down pilotrams' Rams ? In the second game of the bowl season the Fresno State Bulldogs take on the SUC Trojans in the Las Vegas Bowl. Who's left to coach the Trojans?
Oregon St. plays Xmas Eve in Hawaii. UW plays BYU (go WCC) on the 27th. Notre Dame plays in Yankee Stadium on the 28th. The Ducks play the Lame Duck in the Alamo on the 30th. (When is the last time all 4 NW Pac-12 schools went to a bowl the same season?) Sadly, there aren't many interesting games on New Year's Day. Maybe the Rose Bowl; but I think the O/U on points is 10.
Are there any of these or any other bowls you are interested in seeing?

I have to admit I haven't followed very many schools this year, but being a Stanford fan and a West Coast guy, I always look forward to the Rose Bowl.....and this year's matchup between Stanford and Michigan St. could be a good one...Go Cardinal?up7587 wrote:Are there any of these or any other bowls you are interested in seeing?
Other than that, it's the Sugar Bowl -- Alabama vs. Oklahoma, the Orange Bowl -- Ohio St. vs. Clemson, and of course the Speed vs. Brawn game between Florida St. and Auburn....I would love to see the Tigers pull that one out.
I'll probably root for UO against Texas, but it's going to be hard to root against Mack Brown in his last game at Texas. Prediction: Mack's players will be fired up, and be too tough for UO's speedy offense.
(I doubt Coach Brown will want to draw on his Social Security just yet (he's 62). Even though he’s giving up his $5 million a year coaching job.....he will now be receiving $500,000 per year through 2020 as the "special advisor" to the UT president....I doubt we'll see him begging on the Interstate.)

We'll see. That's been the knock on Mack, that he ran too much of a country club atmosphere, and didn't get his players fired up.DoubleDipper wrote:I'll probably root for UO against Texas, but it's going to be hard to root against Mack Brown in his last game at Texas. My two favorite football teams. Has me as excited as when CSU played UP in hoops last year. Sadly, I expect WSU's passing attack to torch CSU's weak secondary. It's a perfect matchup for Halliday. I can only hope that somehow the Rams keep it close and Halliday ends up throwing a pick or two, which seems to happen more often than not.up7587 wrote:In fact, WSU faces CSU in the initial game, the New Mexico Bowl. A bad omen. Almost as bad as flying on Horizon's UO jet.

Re: It's Bowl Season!
I'm rooting for the CSU qb, Garrett Grayson. I watched him at Heritage HS in Vancouver, USA, and I know he was very disappointed on his official visit to WSU that the Cougars were planning to use him as a defensive back.pilotram wrote:My two favorite football teams. I know this game against WSU is a, "Personal thing" for Grayson after being snubbed WSU. He passed for over 10,000 yards in high school, and this year set a CSU single-season record of 3,327....surpassing the previous mark that stood for 30 years...so he's got some talent.
Yea, WSU is currently favored by 5 in tomorrow's matchup in Albuquerque because of Halliday's arm and CSU's suspect secondary.....but I'm looking forward to the junior Grayson playing the game of his life.

Yea, I'd say 18 CSU points in the last 3 minutes was an unbelievable finish...pilotram wrote:Unbelievable finish! WOOOOOO!!!!
I too loved the outcome; glad I watched the game on the DVR before reading your post.

Re: It's Bowl Season!
Oops. I also watched the game on DVR, Except for the last 2 minutes, when CSU scored the touchdown, converted the 2pt conversion to tie it, recovered the kick-off fumble, and kicked the winning field goal. Not too much happened after the recording stopped.

With only 134 bowl games left to record before the real bowl games begin on New Year's Day, remember to add at least 30 minutes to all the published recording times. I added to 30 minutes to Fresno St. vs. USC today, but still missed the last 5 minutes or so.....I assume USC won.

So, if you've been doing something other than trolling the interwebs, you may not have seen this video of an Alabama female fan who had a difference of opinion with an Oklahoma student at the Sugar Bowl. Hilarity ensued.
Of course, there are already many parodies of this event. I found this one funny.

I like watching the husband. He pulls her out, and thinks it's over. Then he looks at the game for a second, and she slips behind him for her dive bomb attack. Then when the ushers show up and start escorting her out, he stops again to look at the game action. 'Bama priorities.

Re: It's Bowl Season!
Looking for something I'm less passionate about than UP basketball, I realized today is the start of the College Football Bowl season.
Coming from an era where the only bowls were the Rose, Orange, Sugar, and Cotton, it was quite a shock to look at the TV bowl schedule and find there are at least 41 bowl games this year....and now even losing teams are participating.
I was also immediately struck by the lack of simplicity in naming the bowls now that capitalism and corporates sponsorship have merged with college athletics:
My favorite bowl names/games this season:
6. Famous Idaho Potato Bowl
5. Raycom Media Camellia Bowl
4. AutoNation Cure Bowl
3. Tax Slayer Bowl
2. Quick Lane Bowl
1. Popeyes Bahamas Bowl
The loud noise you might hear could be my DVR or my brain about to explode.....

Re: It's Bowl Season!
Yup, I thought about that last night, that the bowl thread needed to be updated. Maybe I'll go watch the 2nd half of the Holy War bowl.

Midway through the first quarter, and this one is over. Five possessions for BYU, 5 turnovers, including 2 pick-sixes (almost 3). 35-0 Utah.

Haha, turned it on and saw that score. That's gotta be tough to take, especially when you have to be sober.

Re: It's Bowl Season!
The bowl game in Albuquerque between New Mexico and Arizona was good, but the best bowl game so far this season, especially if you like to watch the military academies, was the Navy win over Pitt today.
Navy QB Keenan Reynolds, who led Navy to its 3rd consecutive bowl win, will somehow find a position in the NFL (probably at slot receiver) when his US Navy commitment is completed.
Today's game started off with Pitt returning the opening kickoff 100 yards and ended with Reynolds leading Navy to its first 11 win season ever! And he did it in style, becoming the all-time FBS leader in touchdowns (88) and points (530). Not only that he rushed for over 300 yards in the game to become the all-time leading quarterback in rushing yards in FBS with 4,559 yards over his career.
Reynolds may have finished 5th in the Heisman Trophy balloting this year, but his performance today was better than any I remember from former Navy Heisman winners Roger Staubach ('63) and Joe Bellino ('60).

The fact that Reynolds wasn't even in the top three for the Heisman was really upsetting. I thought he deserved earned it more than anyone else.
