What a roller-coaster season for the Lady Hurricanes:
Lose to NAVY . . . squeak past Washington . . . defeat UNC . . .

VA-FSU score still holds at 59:55. Virginia has 8 shots, 5 on goal; FSU has 6 shots, none on goal. Corners are 7-4 Virginia.'78 Alum wrote:At the half-

Also of note, Nebraska beat Iowa State 2-1 in overtime. Morgan Marlborough had an assist but not a goal.

Re: Games of Interest
The FSU result should surely put us ahead of them in RPI if we take care of business. Maybe we needed UCLA or FSU to lose one more to assure top 4.
UCLA and USC are on Fox Soccer Channel tonight for those of you who subscribe.

Maybe, it would be neat if FSU were able to meet up with Portland this postseason, preferably in the Cup.

Wake Forest 3, Maryland 1 final
Wake is getting up there. Plays Boston College next week.
According to the instant RPIs on the NC site, UCLA is precisely tied with us in unadjusted RPI, at .669. And their two remaining opponents, UW and WSU, have slightly better records than Santa Clara and San Diego (and also presumably better Element 3 scores) so presumably we won't do better than 4th in RPI if we, UCLA, and NC all win out. It would be great if one of the Washington teams could manage at least a tie. Or Maryland against NC. They're all home games for the teams we're rooting for.

If both FSU and the Pilots win out, then according to the nc-soccer "projecting forward" feature, the Pilots will finish with a higher unadjusted RPI than FSU. I just realized, however, that the "projecting forward" feature does not include conference tournament games if they aren't on the schedule yet, and they aren't for the ACC since their tournament participants won't be finalized until Sunday.
Re: Games of Interest
Sheesh, it sounds like having a league tournament is a huge advantage in RPI, since you always play teams with great win-loss records. What we need is a little season-ending tournament combining, say, the top WCC team with the top three Pac-10 teams.
But it would be tiring and injuring. Better would be for NCAA to change their formula a little, put more emphasis on Element 1 (and/or NCRPI?) and less on Elements 2 and 3.

Re: Games of Interest
If we all win out we will have an advantage over UCLA in head-to-head competition over UCLA, since they tied USD.
Beyond that, we have to depend a little on the teams we played to perform (element 2) and the teams that play UCLA and FSU perform, also , especially the ones that aren't the ones we played in the PAC10 when we compare to UCLA, and aren't Miami when we compare to FSU.
We got a bit of help this weekend so far from Illinois, TAMU, Col Col,Columbia, and even SMU
We almost got help from Miami, and the best we can say about Montana (and SMU) is that their season is over, so they can't drag down our RPI any more.
This would all be moot if Vtech manages a win over FSU.
UCLA has a couple of teams on their schedule who will play each other, guaranteeing a loss or two ties in the RPI column.
Long beach State plays Cal Northridge next. Both teams played UCLA.
UCLA played FSU and UNC, which guarantees a loss or two ties there.
UCSB plays Cal Poly, which is probably a loss.
We have none of these linkages outside the PAC10, and the ones we have within the PAC10 we share with UCLA

I did a study of whether conference tournaments are a plus or a minus for teams' RPIs. My conclusion: the evidence does not demonstrate either a plus or a minus. If you're interested in the details, go to the RPI site and look through the "Effect of Conference Tournaments" page. Link: http://sites.google.com/site/rpifordivisioniwomenssoccer/Home

It turns out that SMU made it into the Conference USA tournament, as the last (#6) team to get in. They play Memphis on 11/4. The bad news is that they lost to Memphis 2-0, at Memphis, earlier in the season. The good news is that SMU has been playing pretty well towards the end of the season, and the game is at SMU, which is hosting the tournament.
Bottom line is that the Pilots need to beat Santa Clara and San Diego.

Hey!
It's time to start pulling for #1 -- err, #2.
If the choice is me seeing a quarterfinal game at home or you seeing a quarterfinal game at home, I'm not conflicted over my choice.
I'm pulling for them more than you know. My niece was a Hokie, and Maxwell, the talking robot head that sits on my desk, is sporting a Hokie hat right now.
I'll pull for a UP -FSU final, though. Hows that?
Besides, I don't think they'll pull it off.

I could at least get him to chant
"Let's Go --- Hokies"
Nice crowd. Sort of reminds me of a Merlo Tournament crowd.
How do you like the 3D glasses?
