2009 Rosters
Some of the teams are posting their 2009 rosters now.
UNC lists 37 players (9 Sr, 8 Jr, 7 So, 13 Fr) while FL has 33.
Are they planning a JV schedule or what?

Re: 2009 Rosters
Ha, post that on BigSoccer, that will surely get a great reaction . Double dog dare ya. Seriously though I have heard that a few on UFs roster are local(from Florida) and have other scholarships and are basically walk- ons. None are likely to see the field, but hey you could find a diamond in the rough.

Whether any see the field is another question, But just because they received academic money isn't cause to dismiss them. There are and have been students at UP who were eligible for academic money that were great contributors to the team. The first one that comes to mind is Sinclair. I'm willing to bet that with her academic accomplishments, very little of her money had to come from athletic scholarships. In addition the the Mac-Hermans, she was also NCAA scholar athlete of the year one year.
Cheryl Loveless was another. She came on a President's Grant, if I recall, an academic grant the President of the University gets to administer based on academic prowess (hers was in chemistry).
I don't think anyone would have called either player "walk-ons"
And these aren't isolated cases. Every year UP gets some of those kids. I'm convinced it's part of the recruiting strategy.
The local vs out of state issue is another story. I don't know about Florida, but surely part of North Carolina's inflated roster is that student athletes there are treated as in-state by statute, greatly magnifying the benefits of any partial scholarships they receive.
UNC law helps athletics more than scholars

My intent was not to dismiss the walk-ons, although I can see how that came across.

Penn State lists 29 on the roster including the 9 Freshmen. After I looked at the freshmen list, it is the best I have seen in a number of years. Still hoping for that rematch here at Merlo next year.

There is quite a bit of buzz around PSU this year. The FSU-PSU game should be a good one.

I am not expecting too much early from the freshmen except maybe from Nairns. I think FSU has the better returning team.

Re: 2009 Rosters
Narin and Tiffany McCarty of FSU were club teammates and there was an article about them a year or so ago by ESPN Rise. As for us having the better returning team, perhaps but we did lose three starters from the back line.
