Very cool idea and news:

http://usfdons.cstv.com/sports/m-baskbl/spec-rel/012909aaa.html

(San Bruno, CA) - Six of the WCC's all-time greatest athletes and two of the conference's top coaches headline the WCC's inaugural Hall of Honor class. The members will formally be inducted at the 2009 WCC Hall of Honor Brunch on Saturday, March 7 at the Orleans Arena and honored the next day during halftime of the first men's basketball semifinal game on March 8.

USF's inaugural inductee is former NBA and Dons star Joe Ellis (1963-66), who led the Green and Gold to three postseason trips, including a pair of NCAA Tournament berths. One of a long line of Dons from Oakland's McClymonds High School, Ellis helped lift USF to a No. 6 national ranking during the 1964-65 campaign. Ellis ranks in the USF career top-25 in scoring (21, 1,120) and rebounding (11, 737) in just three varsity seasons.

The Hall of Honor Brunch will be held Saturday morning at 9 AM in Gold Rooms B & C. Tickets are currently available for $40, and tables of eight are available for $320. In order to purchase tickets, contact Audrey Mesta at the WCC Office by phone at 650-873-8622 or by email at amesta@westcoast.org.

This year's honorees include eight individuals that span a long history of outstanding athletic achievements across the WCC's eight respective institutions. The inductees include: Loyola Marymount's Hank Gathers, the conference's first two-time tournament MVP and the leading scorer in the event's 19-year history; 1991 and 1992 All-American and conference MVP Doug Christie from Pepperdine; Frank Burgess, who led Gonzaga in scoring for three seasons and won the national collegiate scoring crown in 1961; head coach Clive Charles, who led Portland's men's and women's soccer teams to 439 victories, 20 national playoff berths, 13 league titles, and a national championship; the winningest Santa Clara men's basketball coach and former athletic director Carroll Williams; Tom Meschery, who concluded his collegiate career as Saint Mary's leading rebounder and 12th leading scorer; former USD basketball captain and MVP Bernie Bickerstaff, who later coached USD's men basketball team and moved on to coach in the NBA; and USF Hall of Famer Joe Ellis, who represented the U.S. in the World Games.

"We are very proud of the inaugural Hall of Honor class," said WCC Commissioner Jamie Zaninovich. "The list of inductees represents the West Coast Conference's strong tradition of athletic excellence."

All inductees will be present at the Hall of Honor Brunch in Las Vegas with the exception of the late Hank Gathers and Clive Charles. Attending on behalf of Gathers will be former LMU teammate, Jeff Fryer, while Clarena Charles will be in attendance to honor her husband.

CLIVE CHARLES, University of Portland
Clive Charles was the greatest coach in more than a century of University of Portland athletics, leading his women's and men's soccer teams to 439 victories, 20 national playoff berths, 13 conference titles, and a national championship. His players went on to play on the national teams of Canada, Mexico, and the United States, and also play in the professional ranks in America and Europe and Asia. Others earned Olympic gold medals and won World Cups. He coached the United States Olympic Team (1996-2000) and Women's National Team (1993-1996). He was a professional soccer star in England, Wales, and North America, and was named to the all-time North American Soccer League team.

Just before the Olympics in August 2000, Charles was diagnosed with prostate cancer. Despite the harsh news, Charles still coached the U.S. to a fourth place finish in the Olympic Games. Charles also continued to coach both the men's and women's Portland teams until his death. During his last season (2002), the Portland women's team won the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) championship.

relax guys. this looks like it was a quota of one individual per school, and it sure looks like each school got to pick its inductee.

I have no doubt we made the right choice for UP, but who are we to chose for the other schools?

the rest of those folks will come in soon enough.

We should be more concerned with getting our own hall of fame in order. Beating a Dead Horse

If they had asked the GU fans they probably would have picked Adam "greatest player ever in WCC history" Morrison, seeing as how so many of them only know about this decade. Rolling Eyes

I'd like to see a few players who were playing since I was alive, too. They were doing the calendar with Capital letters instead of arabic numerals, then.

UP is the only school I know that doesn't induct its All Americans and Olympic medal winners.

Haha, maybe we should make our own HOF for deserving pilots of old... What criteria do you use?? Post season accolades? Medals? Career stats? Success AFTER leaving UP? I think all have to be considered obviously...

I think the criteria is for athletes of others who bring athletic credit to the university.

from the website-

Nominees to the Athletic Hall of Fame must meet several qualifications: if an athlete, the nominee’s athletic eligibility must have been completed at least five years prior to induction. Athletes still active professionally will not be considered for nomination until they formally retire; the nominee must have attended the University for at least two years; if not an athlete, the nominee must have made a significant contribution to the University’s athletic program as an administrator, coach, benefactor, etc.

At present, there are 68 male and female student-athletes in the Hall of Fame, as well as three honorary inductions, six Meritorious inductions, seven coaches and administrators, and one team.

Lets look at the male/female breakdown:

of the 68 inductees, I count 11 women. I'm willing to bet there are more women soccer All Americans than men in any sport (possibly than in all other male sports put together) , yet there is only one woman in the hall. Why is that?

The women's basketball team has been to the tournament more times than the men, yet there are fewer women in that category as well.

At schools that take their sports seriously, if you get a gold medal you are in - period. Heather Oreilly is in her hall of fame. Mia hamm was in hers the year after she graduated.

How come Tiff and Shannon aren't in ours?. Don't give me the retirement crap, either. that wasn't adhered to with Benedetti or other male atheletes.

Even Virginia Chiles was excluded, while Earle got in. Aren't both their names on the building?

Yeah, if you eliminate the retirement caveat you have a ton you could most definitely add... Tiff, Shannon, Kasey Keller are the obvious ones... Christine OBVIOUSLY, and heck you could even induct the 2002 and 2005 women's teams as a unit as well (and I like the concept of inducting teams in additions to individuals). And what about John Moore or David Kinsella or the Driscoll brothers, they are all done and graduated, and definitely brought acclaim... The men have one 30 straight WCC titles and NOT ONE HOF individual in that entire time span???

I think you could also look at coaches not in there like Jack Avina, and it may be a bit early but if Garrett and Rob Conner aren't in there, it's a joke.

I knew it was bad, but I didn't have any idea it was THIS bad... I feel your ire Geez....

Here's the most inadequate official HOF list at any school I've ever seen if anyone wants a look: http://portlandpilots.com/documents/2008/8/11/Athletic%20Hall%20of%20Fame.pdf?id=2541

A letter writing campaign in the summer will be useless. They vote on members in the spring of odd years. That's this year. if you write this summer the letter will be forgotten in two years. The time is now.

They voted nobody into the hall the last cycle. Imagine - they couldn't think of one woman to induct. Shocked

There is one team in the hall. It's a tennis team that I'm sure was a fine team.

It did not win National acclaim, no National championship, not even a final four.

Um-- people - have you been keeping track of some other teams that did better?

The National Soccer Hall Of fame had a similar problem. The last voting cycle they voted nobody into the hall, even though Joy Faucett, arguably one of the three best of all time, and Shannon were on the ballot.

It was seen as enough of a scandal that they rewrote the voting rules and reconstituted the voting panel. Faucett got in this year.

Maybe it's time to do something similar here. If you can't think of a single Pilot to grace the hall, you don't deserve a vote.

Shannon will get on the National ballot again. Tiff will surely join her. Will UP have to suffer the embarrassment of having a player in the National Hall and not in the UP Hall?

Shannon is already in the San Diego and Oregon Halls.

She and Clive are the only soccer people in the Oregon Hall, but that's another issue.

That would indeed be embarrassing... And while there may not be scandal involved here, when the list of players NOT in the hall is growing more impressive than those in it, it might be time to fix the system...

just for the record- Shannon retired from playing several years ago.

Tiffeny retired from the National team and is not currently under contract with any professional team. Those are the same conditions under which Benedetti and Bumgardt were admitted to the hall. They both played professionally before and after admittance.

Tiffeny and Shannon started playing around the time my family started really following UP sports (well, I guess my grandpa started in like the 40s). Back when they were playing you couldn't think of UP (academics, athletics, everything) without thinking of those two. They both (along with Sinclair) should have been inducted the first day they got back to campus after their last collegiate game.

The way the Hall is now, they should just get rid of it, it is kind of a travesty. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I have not been to Chiles much in the last few years, but aren't there awards in glass cases across from the snack shack? The players whose names are in there would be a batter HOF.

It will look funny 50 years from now when the hall had (making numbers up here) 20 members in 2009, but the class of 2010 included 35 members? That is almost what it needs though.

I think it would be great if they re-did the Hall and voted in a ton of new people, and maybe during Reunion weekend did a special ceremony to reveal it, or induct the members or something. I went to the reunion when I was in Portland, but have not since I moved. I don't really see myself going anytime soon, but if they did some big HOF thing, I would certainly consider it.

Agreed... Honestly I feel like by the criteria listed, our soccer players have a better chance of being enshrined in Canton, Springfield or Cooperstown than seeing their name in the UP HOF... A big induction ceremony of deserving players at a Reunion event or whatever would definitely make a Reunion intriguing.... I'll just hope I'm at the 1000K post mark so Geez, Nut and Stoney will let me sip on the Pliny during the ceremony...

"Athletes still active professionally will not be considered for nomination until they formally retire;" --qualifications quoted by PurpleG.

This is a pretty lame rule. Take for example, how Brandon Roy recently had his number retired at the University of Washington. If he attended UP, he would not be able to enter the HOF until he finished a career in the NBA.

So, if a soccer player comes out of retirement to enter the WPS for a year, they are ineligible until they formally retire...even if it's just a 1-3 year swan song? I don't like that rule.
