Pilots vs. Denver, Friday 11/13/09, Merlo Field

Pilots were seeded #2, and will play Denver University on Friday, November 13th at Merlo Field. (Friday the 13th?! ) The other teams in our pod are Washington and Ole Miss.

Winners play on Sunday. I have a feeling the Pilots may come out with a chip on their shoulders regarding the seeding... this will be interesting to say the least.

So what is the scoop on Denver? Pretty strong W-L record for a team playing a two seed. Mirage?

The UP is gearing up for the weekend. I've gotten form emails from Jason Brough, Trish Miller and David Tayor in the past hour with all the info:

looking at denver's won/loss record on their website, we've played three mutual opponents. illinois which denver drew with 1-1 shortly before illinois played us. denver also played oregon an oregon st at the beavers tourney in mid september. lost to oregon 4-1 an oregon st 3-1

Look at their Sun Belt Conference opponents. A bunch of teams in the...ah...Sun Belt, and Denver. About as random as Louisiana Tech being in the WAC.

This might make them think twice about wanting to come into the WCC, though.

I like them as an addition to the WCC. They have a good program, so I expect a good game.

I do too. Denver is a large media market (a major issue when it comes to expansion) and is fertile recruiting territory for all WCC schools. Plus they are competitive in most sports, private (though not Catholic), very strong academics... a natural fit, for the most part. And they really want to be in the WCC.

There are issues with travel and all that, I know, but I would venture that Denver is "ahead" of Seattle when it comes to which school the fellow WCC schools want to join the conference along with Pacific (which is a shoo-in).

Huh... Not that it matters, but, wouldn't Denver be the only non-Catholic school other than Pepperdine?? I personally would rather have Seattle U. or Pacific. But, then again, I don't know a lot about Denver.

All this talk of WCC expansion. When does anyone think this will happen?

I didn't realize the WCC was a Catholic conference. Never heard of a conference based on religion.

Shouldn't we be calling it the Western Catholic Conference?

we'll it is mostly Catholic only by accidents of history, and I think if you talked to the folks at Pepperdine, they'd take issue with that characterization. They are affiliated with the Churches of Christ.

Hey, does anyone know anything about tickets for Sunday's game? Only the men's game is listed on ticketmaster. Does that mean they won't sell tickets until they know who's playing? That seems odd.

Flight-time wise it probably wouldn't be too much farther to fly to Denver for a cali team than say Portland or the Can. The travel thing would mostly be an issue for DU, and if they really really want in, that's something for them to consider.
As a Pilot fan on the Front Range, I'd like to have a WCC school close by.

I just called to get my tickets for Friday night and the Ticketmaster people said that Sunday's 2nd Round isn't on sale yet. I guess we will have to buy them immediately following Friday nights game.

They're up now. I just got mine for Sunday.
