The coaching carousel

Post by PurpleGeezer on Tue Mar 31, 2009 11:36 pm

The AD's have been busy already at the final four. -- or have they?

Kent stays another year 'cause he did so well this year.

Ditto Few

Calipari is the big winner, at 6 million to leave Memphis for Kentucky.

Wow! the stakes are getting high....

Ernie is bringing in a new associate head coach who was on Lute's staff for a long time. UO asked Few, Few said thanks, but... (you could see that coming from both parties).

I guess Calipari is going for the $ then. There's no way Tareke even thinks about coming back to Memphis without his coach. He probably would have gone pro anyway, but, now I think it's tomohawk slam... Done deal. Going from coaching Tareke to Meeks must be rough... I've forgotten what year Meeks is at Kentucky.

This is not basketball related, but, my condolences Geezer for Argentina's 6-1 loss to Bolivia. The US is on right now on ESPN2 (5 pm PST; 4/1/09).

Meeks is a junior. And Patterson is a sophomore. They are only losing one guy (to graduation) this year, he averages around 1 point a game. So I wouldn't be surprised if they were back in the tourney next year. I don't know what this will do to recruiting. If I remember correctly, UK already has a pretty big commitment. I wonder if any of his Memphis recruits will follow him...

Looks like Tim Floyd is taking the Arizona job. That means USC now has an open position.

So then we're back to square one - who's going to take Arizona?

Few? Please? Twisted Evil

Here's a blurb from Mike Tokita's blog in the O about coaches:

• Washington State isn't the only Division I school in the Pacific Northwest with a coaching opening. Seattle University, which is in its first year of a five-year process of becoming a D-I program, also is looking after coach Joe Callero leaves to take the Cal Poly San Luis Obispo job. This becomes another domino in the area's coaching game. If, for example, Bone gets the WSU job, then potential successors at PSU also have the Seattle U job to look at. Washington assistants Jim Shaw and Cameron Dollar, could be mentioned for either, the Times' Condotta writes. Bone, of course, also was a UW assistant before getting the PSU job.

Bummer for SU. The only Pilots game I was able to make this year was against the Redhawks, and I thought Callero was doing a great job coaching those guys up. Isn't Jim Shaw a former Chavez assistant?

It's even more complicated than that. Not only was Jim Shaw an assistant at UP under Rob Chavez, but Seattle U. assistant Keith Brown was an assistant at UP under Michael Holton.

I can't believe this wasn't noticed earlier, especially by DonsCentral. According to the Seattle Times, former USF coach Phil "We Play Hard" Matthews is in the running at Seattle U.

Cameron Dollar... that name probably ruffles some Gonzaga feathers - he was the guy Mark Few crybabied to the NCAA about after some questionable contact he had with Josh Heytvelt after Josh had signed his LOI.

Still, he knows the Seattle recruiting turf well and has been rumored as a possible candidate for several openings now. Will be interesting to see how he does with the opportunity.
