I have been told that Tyler got in excess of $300,000, so I guess they've got plenty to spread around.up7587 wrote:Yeah, I saw that too. With all those new portal players, wonder how much NIL they had to spread around.

Re: 2024 Offseason
With $2 million being handed out to Osobor, a resident of England, one has to wonder how many of these payments are being handled if international players cannot receive NIL money except in their home country.
Have the rules been changed, or will he be doing $2 million worth of endorsements for UW in London?
I am told that a very good transfer was close to committing with UP but instead decided to take NIL money elsewhere.
Under the current rules, it would seem UP will just go through a continuous cycle of changing rosters each year as Coach Legans develops young recruits so they can transfer to other schools offering $$$,$$$.

Re: 2024 Offseason
Exactly. Players come to UP to buff up their game and trade it for NIL elsewhere when Portland opens. Personally,I would not want to coach in that situation And look for an exit

Not unlikely that Coach Legans is frustrated. It doesn't take much imagination to think that the fan base will soon follow.
The "organ donors for the rich" arrangement may not be tenable in the long run.

Re: 2024 Offseason
One thought, is this has a whiff of desperation to it for Washington. They brought in transfers last year, failed to win big, and fired the coach. Now they are moving to the Big Ten. The new coach who coached four years at Montana St and had two good seasons, then moved to Utah St., had a good year there and immediately left for UW. Hard to fault players moving and getting paid when a coach is jumping that quickly.
Sprinkle has to be successful, or the Huskies won't grant him any slack after spending all that NIL money for him, and probably paid a buyout at USU for him. Osobar played for him at MTSU, and was a middling player. He moved with Sprinkle to USU, and blew up. Will he be a dominant player in the Big 10? We'll see.

Re: 2024 Offseason
Heard a comment on a local sports radio talk show that parents are now demanding their own NIL money in addition to the money their athlete kid gets.
And that when the NCAA settles the lawsuits against them, there will be a collective bargaining agreement that plays the players, which will be in addition to the NIL money.

I learned today that many of these athletes are doing nothing more than posting on social media to legally earn their money.up7587 wrote:Heard a comment on a local sports radio talk show that parents are now demanding their own NIL money in addition to the money their athlete kid gets.
I also heard of one instance where a star athlete was given a car by a dealership and then was paid to drive the car around in the vicinity of the university as an advertisement for the dealership.
Apparently, they just have to be doing something...

Where's Yuto? It's not likely that UW ran out of NIL donors...
Today, Ihenacho goes for the $$$,$$$ and joins Tyler Harris and his millionaire teammate at UW.Wyoming Tribune Eagle wrote: Less than 24 hours after reports surfaced that head coach Jeff Linder was on his way out, the University of Wyoming men's basketball team lost a trio of incoming transfers Friday afternoon.
Yuto Yamanouchi-Williams (University of Portland), Tyree Ihenacho (North Dakota) and Obi Agbim (Fort Lewis College) all decommitted from the Cowboys.

Yeah, Muncie Indiana, northeast of Indianapolis. I guess they had an opening as their 2nd leading scorer and assists leader Jalin Anderson, who played 3 years at LMU before transferring to Ball St. last year, jumped back in the portal and moved to Incarnate Word. Incarnate Word had PGs transfer to Sam Houston St., Bowie St, and Texas Southern, so they needed one.
Round and round they go.

BTW, Ball St. was #266 in KenPom, so a little better than UP, but not much. I'm sure Muncie is lovely.

Cyprian Hyde to VMI:

He will look good in the VMI ROTC uniform...better than in his Keydet basketball uniform...(yes, that is the proper spelling).

Really good school, great town and fan base, excellent coach and team...Go Yuto!
Yuto has the most potential of all the UP players who have gone into the portal, IMO.

@VerbalCommits wrote:Former Portland G Drew Stack is transferring to Hartford (DIII).
To summarize:
Vucinic -> Weber St.
Gorosito -> Ball St.
Stack (W) -> Hartford
Y-Williams -> Nevada
Harris -> Washington (the bad purple)
Hyde -> VMI
That's almost everyone who left. Andrew Younan was a redshirt walk-on who I have not seen a report of his destination. And I don't know anything regarding Thomas Oosterbroek.

Re: 2024 Offseason
According to Verbal Commits, most of Ball State's guards have transferred out. They have a Sr. PG who played four years at Boston U., transferred to Ball St. a year ago, and didn't play in 2023-24. Juanse is the only other PG on their roster so far. They don't have any other PGs or SGs with much experience. If Juanse wanted guaranteed minutes, he may have gotten from the Cardinals.

Re: 2024 Offseason
I know nothing about NIL money potentially going to Juanse and his "advisor," but I do know he was NOT a hot commodity in the portal and he was definitely looking for more minutes than he was likely to get at UP this coming season.up7587 wrote: If Juanse wanted guaranteed minutes, he may have gotten from the Cardinals.

Re: 2024 Offseason
San Diego transfer and Tyler Harris's All-WCC Freshman teammate, Kevin Patton Jr. has committed to USC.
So, Tyler to UW and Kevin to USC.
Both those school are in the Big 10 this coming season, right?
Wow, that's a big jump for both, and it also confirms the eye for talent that both Coach Legans and Coach Lavin have.
I'm not going to comment on NIL available at the bigger schools, to me it's all about the opportunity to compete at the highest level.

Re: 2024 Offseason
It should be a recruiting pitch by all the WCC coaching staffs that two of the five players on the NBA All-Rookie First Team are from the WCC.
EDIT: Talking to Coach Legans, he indicated that something like this used to be good for recruiting but now that NIL $$$$$$$ is part of the deal it does not matter as much as it once did.
