LMU @ Portland, Saturday 2/12, 7:00pm
Time to stop celebrating and look ahead. The Lions come to Chiles, currently 2-7 in conference with a game Thursday vs. BYU before heading north. After beating the Pilots 70-58 in L.A. on 1/17, they beat PU in OT, and have lost five in a row against teams in the top half of the conference standings.
In the first game, the Pilots had a 7-point lead after 15 minutes, allowing only 13 points. Then they allowed 18 in the last 5 minutes and trailed at the half by 3. LMU stayed hot and went on an 11-0 run in the first 5 minutes of the 2nd half. Pilots never got close again. In that critical 10 minutes in the middle of the game, LMU made 7 3P shots and 4 2P shots. Overall they were 8-24 from 3P. Meanwhile, the Pilots were 3-23 (13%) from 3P, with Tyler going 1-7 and Kristian going 0-5. Hope we never see that again! Five Lions were in double figures. Eli Scott is their skilled inside player, averaging 16.3 ppg, 6.9 rebounds and 3.3 assists.

I forgot to mention, Coach Legans was interviewed today on 1080 the Fan. He said that anyone who mentioned the interview or mentioned him got in free on Saturday night. Not sure the exact process, but spread the word to pack the house.

LMU comes to Chiles 2-8 in WCC play, 9-13 overall. Pilots looking for payback after getting thumped at Gersten last month. LMU is coming off an OT game Thursday where their 5 starters did most of the work. They are big and strong, happy to pound it in the paint, but they can also shoot the 3 (10-23, 43.5% vs BYU). They have lost six in a row and will be hungry for a win.
TV will be Root Sports, radio 910 ESPN.

WCC Network is out of market only. Root Sports has it locally.

I finally got it to work, in time to see an outstanding second half. When was the last time we had a winning streak in conference play? Hard to say if Robertson or Sjolund should be the WCC player of the week.

No game-related in-game posts and the Pilots win again?? I think we have a trend here fellas.
And this is just so much fun to watch after what we went through for the past half decade. What an absolute treat!

Ditto. I could actually enjoy a game for the first time in a long time without dreading the potential end of game fold.
Tyler was such a joy to watch tonight at both ends of the floor.
The league office is going to have a problem deciding between Robertson and Sjolund this week.

Go Pilots!
Seems to be the 2017-18 season with back-to-back wins against USD and LMU and then Pepperdine and LMU again. Anything longer than two would be 2014-15 with 4.
As much as Sjolund was clutch in the USF game, I'd probably edge out Robertson just by stats alone. It's amazing how many "greats" have passed through the program and yet the first two triple doubles in school history are already from this season alone.
Post-game Radio with Legans and Robertson.

Re: LMU @ Portland, Saturday 2/12, 7:00pm
First LMU game, LMU got 31 points from their bench. LMU scored 70 points. Pilots got zero bench points in their 58 total points.
This game, LMU got 5 points from their bench in their 76 points. Pilots got 22, just over 25% of their 86 total points.
Of note, a probably jet-lagged Matija Svetozarevic. just returned from his mother's funeral, played 5 minutes, made all his shots, first a 3P shot, then a beautiful put-back shot, made both his FTs, and got 2 rebounds.

Tyler's night is obviously unparalleled, but Matija's first touch and 3-pointer from the corner in front of the Pilots bench just as LMU was fighting back was the highlight of the night for me.up7587 wrote:Of note, a probably jet-lagged Matija Svetozarevic. just returned from his mother's funeral, played 5 minutes, made all his shots, first a 3P shot, then a beautiful put-back shot, made both his FTs, and got 2 rebounds.
Not only was the game entertaining from start to finish (LMU's only lead was 2-0), but Legs is as fun to watch as any coach whether winning of losing. And don't count out TJ when it comes to pegging the fun-meter when the team comes up big on defense.
WARNING: You risk potential injury doing chest-bumps with any of the coaches following a victory!!

Re Tyler Robertson's amazing night, he scored 26 of his 31 points in the first 21 minutes of the game. With Meadows out the 2nd half, he spent his time drawing the defense to him and distributing. Great team player.

WCCSports.com wrote:#WCCSPORTS PLAYER OF THE WEEK – TYLER ROBERTSON, SO., G – PORTLAND
Robertson led the Pilots to two wins last week while recording some memorable performances. He posted a triple-double with 31 points, 11 rebounds and 11 assists in Saturday's 86-76 win against LMU, joining teammate Mike Meadows as two of 17 Division I players to record a triple-double this season. Robertson secured the first 30-point triple-double by any Division I men's player in more than four years. In addition, he became the first Division I player in the last 25 years to post a 30-point triple-double, making five-plus threes without a miss (5-for-5) and drilling 10-plus free throws without a miss (10-for-10). Robertson also helped propel Portland to its upset victory at San Francisco (69-68) on Tuesday with 10 points, five rebounds and two assists. He played all 40 minutes in both games and was a perfect 18-for-18 from the foul line for the week. This is Portland’s first weekly honor this season.
Also Nominated: Yauhen Massalski, San Francisco; Alex Barcello, BYU; Tommy Kuhse, Saint Mary’s; Houston Mallette, Pepperdine; Drew Timme, Gonzaga
Tyler is the first WCC Player of the Week this year not from one of the top 4 teams (GU, SMC, BYU, USF).

Great news and well deserved! If UP had nominated Sjolund instead, he may well have won the award this week (although Mallette from Pepperdine -- who won Freshman of the Week -- would have a strong case for the POW award, too).up7587 wrote:After two 40 minutes games, hope he sits out Bushnell.
Let's hope all the starters sit out tomorrow's game. I still think it's a bit foolish to play this game, with two important conference match-ups on Thursday and Saturday. But if the back-ups play the vast majority of the minutes, I'll change my tune. As Dean said, it could set up some of the reserves to make needed contributions in later games.
If Silveira is healthy, I'd love to see him get some extended time and get back into the rotation. He had stretches of being very effective early in the season.
