Moving on…San Jose St @ Pilots 12/17 @ 6pm-local TV on KRCW
Portland’s loss to Oregon dropped the team 14 spots in the NET to 245 and eighth place in the WCC, just one spot ahead of Pacific and 10 ahead of Pepperdine.
San Jose State’s NET is 216.
KenPom still rates UP as last in the WCC at #293 while suggesting the game against #280 SJSU will be UP’s last win of the entire season, and it will be a squeaker, 72-70.
The Spartans (5-4) have won four of their last five games, a stretch that includes a 82-69 loss in Malibu and a home win over Pacific, 78-66.
SJSU has got height and talent. They have three players (#15, #13, and #31) who are hitting the 3-pt shot at close to or at a 50% clip, and as a team they are 12th in the nation behind the arc at just under 40%. On defense, their 7-foot center, #5, leads the team in blocked shots, and as a team they are 18th in the nation in blocks, averaging close to 6 blocks per game.
While UP is playing its 3rd game in five days, SJSU is well rested having played last Saturday, and just two games in the last 11 days.
This is the last home game for the Pilots in 2021, and remember, it starts at 6pm with limited parking in the main parking lot near the Chiles Center due to construction nearby.
It is going to be tough one for UP, and the games are only going to get much tougher going forward.

One of the positives to look for after being dominated by UO in the paint with their size is SJSU not having their 7-footer, Diallo, available for the game. Talked with Coach Miles yesterday on the phone and he thinks UP has the advantage with how they use T. Rob and rotate Zo and V. Diallo is out with an injury.
This SJSU team is not where they thought they would be early on. The Spartans only have 8 scholarship players on the roster and had 7 guys that were supposed to join the team but whether it was clearance or academics, they never made it on the squad for the season.
DD is right though, They shoot the three really well and that has been a problem for UP.

You’re not kidding. SJSU will be rested. Then they’ll play their 4th in 7 days against a rested Montana State team. Then on the road against a UC Davis team that just beat Oregon State in Corvallis.
This is a big one for the Pilots.

Too bad the schedule was UO this year. OSU might of been a closer game.
I need to ignore the win/loss record, and just focus on if I think the team is making progress, players are developing, and the guys are working together and enjoying the process. Those are things we haven't seen in recent years. I don't expect many wins going forward.

I think the mirror universe Coach Ben Johnson currently has the Minnesota Golden Gophers off to a 9-1 start!

I swear I feel like there's always someone on the opposing team every game who has a "career night" :V

At least it was over in a flash, and we didn't have sit through any more SJSU 3-point shots.
I do not recall any UP game being played in under 100 minutes start to finish including halftime and TV timeouts...but this one was.

SJSU #44, Trey Smith, is a walk-on, but he has started all 10 games of the Spartans.
In his 9 previous games this season prior to tonight, he was 16-52 from behind the arc, tonight he was 8-14.
Seems to me, if you are to effectively play defense and stop the shooters you have to get in front of the ball, and tonight SJSU's offense kept the Pilots defense running all over the court in pursuit of the ball.

On the postgame radio interview, Coach Legans talked about not staying in front of the ball.
The Pilots have allowed 90 or more points in their last three losses (VMI, UO, SJSU). SJSU had not scored 90 in any previous games; they'd averaged just under 68 ppg. Something is going to have to change soon, or conference play will be a bloodbath.
It was obvious that the UP plan was to score points in the paint. When the other team is getting 3 points for every two you get, you have a problem.
