Re: 2022 Recruiting
Cedric Coward has committed to Eastern Washington!Rob's Jacket wrote:[Deep sigh.]
NWC Freshman of the Year, First Team All-NWC, Second Team All-Region, and Region 10 Rookie of the Year, averaging 19 points, 12 boards, 3 assists, and 2 blocks per game ... on a team that went 6-18 overall and 3-13 in conference. I don't blame him at all--he's a great kid and deserves a D1 shot--but as a fan of this once very proud D3 program that's now going on 13 years without a winning season, it's still depressing.
Good for him, he's deserving of his shot at D1 ball based upon his freshman year at Willamette.

One of those big men is 6-10/255 grad-transfer Joey St. Pierre from Chicago, transferring from Milwaukee.DoubleDipper wrote:The staff is actively looking for one or two big men to join the Pilots this summer, and they knew of McRae, but expecting to find someone better, they did not reach out to him.
I've heard that Joey has committed to the Pilots and will be signing a grant-in-aid agreement to attend UP classes beginning this summer.

Re: 2022 Recruiting
After being the first to report on seeing at least 4 recruits on campus over the last 4 years (freshmen McRae, Obioha, Aimaq, and grad-student St. Pierre) I am glad we got a least one of them.
McRae -- Cal Riverside
Obioha -- Pepperdine
Aimaq -- Mercer and Utah Valley
St. Pierre -- Portland

In 2021-22, St. Pierre played in 31 games, starting 30. He averaged 23.7 min/game. He averaged 6.3 pts, 5.7 rebs, 1.4 blks. He shot 59% from the field, only 48% on FTs, with less than 2 FT attempts per game.
Before playing one year at Milwaukie, he spent 3 years at Univ. of Wisconsin - Parkside, a D-II school, redshirting one year.

Another sighting, but not by me.
I was told there was another tall (6-10?) but skinny guy on campus this afternoon that no one had seen here before.
Besides being described as another white guy, he was also described as "older, definitely not a freshman, probably a grad-student."

I asked Skylar if he knew the name of the recruit on campus this weekend, and he replied, "no, but you should see his wife..."StudentPilot wrote:Besides being described as another white guy, he was also described as "older, definitely not a freshman, probably a grad-student."
Okay you history majors, has UP ever had a men's basketball player with a wife while he played at UP?

Re: 2022 Recruiting
I suspect that over the years there have been more married players than we fans know about, especially post-WWII, but it is probably very rare.StudentPilot wrote:Okay you history majors, has UP ever had a men's basketball player with a wife while he played at UP?
I was away for Portland for 25 years, so someone else will have to comment on the period from 1967 to 1992, but the only married players I can think of are Cincy Powell '66 and his wonderful wife Faye, and in more recent years, David Carr.
Unlike some universities, UP does not have married housing available because the vast majority of married students are grad-students who are established in the area and have homes.
I think the university is going to have to step up their game to fund housing for a student-athlete that will be at UP just one or two years.

Re: 2022 Recruiting
Recruiting visits are a period of evaluation on the part of both the student-athlete and the coaching staff (at least one recruit failed his evaluation on an official visit to UP under the current staff), but the actual recruiting is heavily one-sided with the staff putting its best foot forward.
And in the case of the current recruit on campus, I think we know who should be getting most of the recruiting attention...

Yes! That is the couple that was on campus.
He said he easily recognized the recruit in the picture, but the bride was less easy to recognize at first.
"But that is her."
Who is the recruit??

My hunch is it's someone that Coach Legans has already offered...maybe even already been mentioned in this thread.

You can meet an emotional Wyatt and Alyssa in this BYU tape.
Despite the injuries described, we know that since this tape was made, not only were Alyssa and Wyatt married but he also played a full injury free season at Snow.

At this point it is difficult to say what school the Lowells will choose...I am told they have a number of opportunities and more visits planned.

Offered by the Pilots last June, and by at least 25 other schools including some from the Power 5/6, McGriff committed to Duquesne.DoubleDipper wrote:Quincy McGriff, from LA, is the point guard that Chase Adams is hoping to beat out at Salt Lake CC...that would be an interesting coincidence if McGriff were to come to UP next seasonLA Court Report wrote:The offers keep coming in: 2022 Quincy McGriff 6’6 PG Salt Lake CC has just been offered by Portland
I'm told he had not been on UP's radar for some time.

Your ball must have been iced-up on April 7, because Bonham has committed to Florida.Dean Murdoch wrote:(Crystal ball prediction on Bonham - he’ll be off to Chattanooga)
However, Bonham's teammate at VMI, 6-11 Jake Stephens, has committed to Chattanooga. Stephens had 18 points and 6 rebounds against the Pilots in December.

Re: 2022 Recruiting
A Serbian combo guard who hit the portal at the U. of Maine is being looked at by the Pilots...the same school Isaiah White transferred from three years ago. His name is Vukasin Masic.
He is just a bit older than your average kid with 3 years to play having attended prep school in America, then Hofstra U., and finally Maine.
Not sure he'd be eligible this year with back-to-back D1 transfers, but because his Hofstra coach left due to illness and his Maine's coach was fired, I think there is a possibility he won't have to sit if Legs can convince him to move clear across the country.
Not Portland to Portland...but it's even farther and more difficult from Orono.

Maine was only 6-23, and did not have a single player average double digit points. Masic (6'5", 195#) averaged 9.3 ppg and 28.1 min/game, the most minutes on the team. 4.1 rbs/game, 3.1 asst/game, 1.7 TO/game. Took 53% of his shots from 3P range, hitting 35.4%. Excellent FT shooter, but averaged less than 1 try per game. Also committed just 1 PF per game.
