On the Road

After being blown out in Corvallis by #21 OSU a week ago, UP played better last night in their loss at Cal State Northridge.

UP scored only 15 points in the first half before finally losing, 45-41.  It was almost too painful to watch the first half, but the ladies hung in and showed a marked improvement in the second half.  Freshman Sara Zaragoza has made great strides in adapting her game to D-1 play....and is beginning to learn how to grab rebounds and score without fouling. She was the only Pilot in double figures with 10 points and 4 rebounds in 27 minutes.

Tomorrow the Pilots are at Cal Poly for an afternoon game....I'll go out on a limb and say they'll win their first game for Coach Sorenson.

Despite double figure scoring from 3 UP players, including a game high 24 from Cassandra Brown, and having a 14 point lead at one time, the Pilots lose to Cal Poly, 76-67.

Too many turnovers and a lack of rebounding doomed the Pilots who led at the half by 3 points, but only scored 29 points in the second half after totaling 38 in the first stanza.

Next up is Nevada in Reno on Friday, then Ole Miss or Utah in Reno on Saturday.  Sorry, no wins there!  First opportunity for the women to give Coach Sorenson her first win will probably be 5 weeks after the beginning of the season....December 12th at home against PSU after home games against UO and UW.

Note: After watching the streaming low-def video from Cal Poly, I have a much greater appreciation for the quality of UP's video presentations.

Portland's Kari Luttinen scored her 1,000th career point, Cassandra Brown had 20 points and nine rebounds and head coach Cheryl Sorenson records her first career win as the Pilots surged past the Utah Utes 58-50 on the final day of the Nugget Classic in Reno on Saturday. The Pilots (1-4) out-scored the Utes (1-4) 9-1 down the stretch to pick up the win.

Congratulations, Coach Sorenson!
