Official Release

PORTLAND, Ore. --- The University of Portland men’s soccer program will play five games against teams that advanced to the 2011 NCAA playoffs as well as four non-conference tournaments as part of the 2012 schedule, which was released on Tuesday. The Pilots’ home-opener will be as host of the Nike Portland Invitational the weekend of Aug. 31 – Sept. 2, which will feature Cal State Bakersfield, Wisconsin and Washington. The Pilots take on NCAA first round participant Cal State Bakersfield on Friday, Aug. 31 at 7 p.m. and then host Wisconsin on Sunday, Sept. 2 at 2:30 p.m.

The Pilots open the regular season at a tournament hosted by Cal State Fullerton on Aug. 24-26. Portland will open with Cal State Northridge on Friday, Aug. 24 and then face Fullerton on Sunday, Aug. 26 before returning home for the Nike Invitational.

Portland will then travel to Evansville for the Aces Soccer Classic on Sept. 7-9, facing the host Purple Aces and Bradley, who advanced to the second round of last year’s playoffs.

Following an off week, the Pilots will head to the Husky Fever Classic in Seattle, Wash. to face Seattle University and Brown University. Brown is coming off of a NCAA third round appearance after winning the Ivy League in 2011.

The double round robin West Coast Conference schedule begins on Wednesday, Sept. 26 when Gonzaga visits Merlo Field. Portland will then host San Francisco on Friday, Sept. 28.

A road trip to San Diego (Oct. 5) and Loyola Marymount (Oct. 7) kicks off October before the team returns home for big weekend against WCC rival Santa Clara on Friday, Oct. 12 and NCAA quarterfinalist Saint Mary’s on Sunday, Oct. 14.

The team will then head to the Bay Area for a quick rematch with both Santa Clara and Saint Mary’s on Oct. 26 and Oct. 28, respectively. Portland’s final regular season home games will be Friday, Nov. 2 against Loyola Marymount and Sunday, Nov. 4 against San Diego, which will also serve as Senior Day.

The regular season concludes with a road swing at Gonzaga (Nov. 7) and at San Francisco (Nov. 11).

Portland will be looking to make its 15th overall appearance in the NCAA playoffs, which begin with first and second round games on Nov. 15-18. The NCAA College Cup is set for Dec. 7-9 in Hoover, Ala.

The Pilots return 16 letterwinners and eight starters from a team that just missed the playoffs last fall with an 11-7-2 overall record and a 6-5-1 mark in the WCC. Among the returners is 2011 All-WCC First Team selection Steven Evans, a junior midfielder who led Portland last season with a conference-best six goals and 17 points. Sophomore midfielder Derek Boggs also returns after garnering WCC All-Freshman Team honors last fall, as does senior goalkeeper Justin Baarts, who played every minute in goal for the Pilots last season. New to UP are seven newcomers, which includes five players from the Portland metropolitan area.
Portland season tickets will go on-sale to the public on June 6. Mini packages will be available on June 18, while single-game tickets go on-sale Aug. 1 at 11 a.m. Packages can be purchased in person or over the phone at the Pilot Box Office at the Chiles Center (503) 943-7525. The schedule includes men’s and women’s teams from more than 15 athletic conferences and 21 action-packed Division I matches. On the men’s side, viewers have the opportunity to see players such as UC Santa Barbara’s Ema Boateng, the 2011-12 Gatorade National Boys Soccer High School Player of the Year, when he suits up against UCLA on Sept. 21 and Cal Poly on Oct. 19, as well as collegiate powerhouse Dillon Serna from Akron when the Zips face St. John’s on Sep. 14. FOX Soccer also presents Texas A&M, the highest scoring offense in women’s Division I play, when they meet Big West favorites Long Beach State on Sept. 7.
