Final Run to the WCC Tournament
A VERY RARE ROAD WIN: Senior Natalie Day led five Pilots in double figures as the Pilots cruised to a 80-63 victory over the LMU Lions Saturday afternoon in LA. Aided by a 15-2 run to open the game, the Pilots never looked back. The Pilots are now in 8th place in the WCC, half a game behind LMU for the coveted 7th spot and avoidance of the Wedndesday afternoon game in Las Vegas.
Senior ReZina TecleMariam returned to action for the Pilots from a knee injury, picking up eight points and four assists, leaving her with 999 career points. The native of Puyallup, Wash., will get a chance to reach the 1,000 career point plateau next weekend as the Pilots return to the Chiles Center for a pair of home matches against San Diego and Pepperdine.

The men play at 5:30 on CSNNW, and the women at 7:00 LIVE in the Chiles Center. Watch both games tonight (DVR or late show at the women’s game will both work) and watch ReZina get 1,000+ career points while the ladies begin their march to the WCC Tournament.

Re: Final Run to the WCC Tournament
WOW, that was crazy. Despite some of the worst officiating imaginable, and being down by 5 with less than 2 minutes to go, the women pulled out a win in overtime tonight 58-56. Z finally reached the 1,000 point milestone, but just barely, scoring just 2 points while still trying to get back in game-shape after a knee injury.
A really good game to watch, too few people saw it. But for those of us who were there, including Caleb, a very loud shirtless student wearing a cape who was really getting the middle-schoolers worked up, it was fun and pretty noisy.
In a big, big upset tonight, the last place USF women beat BYU at BYU. This is the same BYU team that took out a ranked Gonzaga team by 40 points just 10 days ago.
So, heading into Saturday, here’s the situation:
GU 23-4 12-2
BYU 22-5 10-3
USD 19-6 10-3
SMC 18-8 9-4
PU 12-12 7-6
SCU 10-16 3-10
UP 10-1 7 3-10
LMU 7-19 3-11
USF 5-22 3-11
The Pilots have 3 games (2 at home) remaining: SCU; @USF; and USD
The Dons have 2 games: UP; and @SCU
The Lions have 2 games: @SMC; and @PU
The Broncos have 3 games: @UP; @BYU; and USF

Re: Final Run to the WCC Tournament
From UP Athletic Department (edited):
Alexis Byrd (image from UP)
Sophomore Alexis Byrd hit a tough go-ahead lay-up in overtime and the Pilots denied Pepperdine in the closing seconds as Portland rallied for a 58-56 win over the Waves in a West Coast Conference women’s basketball game on Thursday night at the Chiles Center. The Pilots scored the final six points in regulation to tie the score and force the extra stanza.
Twice during overtime Pepperdine was able to claim a two-point lead, but the Pilots responded both times as senior Natalie Day and sophomore Cassandra Brown each hit game-tying lay-ins. Then with 45 seconds left and the score tied at 56-56, Pepperdine’s Lauren Bell missed two free throws, setting up Byrd’s game-winner.
With the shot clock winding down, Byrd went baseline, made her way through a couple of defenders and converted a reverse lay-up to give the Pilots the two-point edge with 17 seconds left. The Waves then called time out to set up a final shot, but Jazmine Jackson’s short jumper was off the mark as the buzzer sounded.
The Pilots win their second straight game to improve to 10-17 overall and to 3-10 in the WCC. Pepperdine drops to 12-12 and to 7-6 in the conference.
Day finished with 21 points on the night to lead the Pilots. She hit three three-pointers and has scored in double figures every game this season. Byrd was 4-for-6 from the field, hit a three and four free throws to finish with 13 points.
Brown added eight points, with four of them coming down the stretch when it appeared the Waves had the game in hand with a 51-45 lead and 1:54 showing on the clock. First Byrd hit a pair of free throws to make it a four-point game, then Brown followed with two free throws of her own to pull UP within two.
On Pepperdine’s ensuing possession, Brown made a steal at mid-court, headed the other way and made a close-range shot to tie the score at 51-51 with 32 seconds remaining. The Waves then turned to Jackson for a potential game-winner, but she missed and Portland’s Cassandra Thompson corralled the rebound as the Pilots went to overtime for the first time this year.

That was fun at the end. Good to see the Pilots make the big plays and hit their shots. The layup by Bird for the winning points was a tough shot. Congrats to Z for joining the 1000 point club.

Re: Final Run to the WCC Tournament
All fans wearing pink to tonight’s key contest against Santa Clara will receive free entry into the game, which is set to tip-off at 7 pm. (Not 2pm as originally scheduled).
Saturday’s WCC games and predictions from Basketball State:
USD @ BYU; BYU by 9 (BYU’s got to regroup after losing to last place USF)
PU @ GU; GU by 29 (seems like PU is better than that, but GU’s at home……….)
SCU @ UP; SCU by 15 (that’s crazy, we CAN win this game)
LMU @ SMC; SMC by 10 (just as long as LMU loses!)
Caleb (our Caped Crusader) will be at the game, but his mom will be accompanying him (it's Junior Parents Day) so he won't be able to carry on his great cheerleading (mom doesn’t know about his caped alter-ego), so Drum Squad, this is your chance to really show your school spirit, and PN, come on out and yell; you will be heard!
The schedule has got to favor the Pilots IF we can get plenty of noisy fans in the Chiles Center for the last two home games of the season.

Re: Final Run to the WCC Tournament
The women lost tonight, and it’s hard for me to figure why the coaches didn’t put anyone on Santa Clara’s #10. She made 28 points (24 on 3 pointers) before we started covering her closely; from then on she scored ZERO, but it was too late and we lost 71-70.
A very good and noisy crowd, but we were stunned when, with 8 seconds to go, the Pilots came out of a timeout with the ball in our own end, and the played that was called from the bench resulted in an off-balance, awkward angle shot that wasn’t close.
The Pilots can still avoid the Wednesday play-in game in Las Vegas, but they’ve got to win the two remaining games.

Re: Final Run to the WCC Tournament
Alyssa Shoji is one of the top shooters in the conference but you're right. They let her get a lot of open looks.
We did very well to come back and have a chance with the last shot and Natalie had a lot to do with that. Good job by Alexis Byrd with 23 and Luttinen keeps up a good freshman year with 13.

Point well taken, upsailor; there are many who share your sentiment. There was a long-term contract signed just before the last AD came in; I think it has about run its course.upsailor wrote:Nothing that comes from the women's bench surprises me.

Re: Final Run to the WCC Tournament
The Ladies are @ USF tonight in another "must win" game. USF just came off a BIG win @ BYU that gives them the tie-breaker when it comes to the Wednesday play-in game.
Well, if both the Men's and Women's teams play on Wednesday, at least it will give us week more of Pilots basketball -- always the optimist!!!

Re: Final Run to the WCC Tournament
Well now! The women may have just saved the band's trip to Vegas (the band leaves Wednesday night...IF one or both Pilot teams play Thursday). They beat USF on the road 77-63 tonight. Natalie Day got a double-double with 28 and 12. She's been one of my favorites. When she's on you can't stop her.
Now it comes down to Saturday against USD.
[T6] SCU 4-11
[T6] UP 4-11
[8] USF 3-12
[9] LMU 3-13 (locked in to the 8/9 game)
USF is at Santa Clara, but let's just get the win and not have to worry about it. Hope people can make it out for a big game.

Congratulations to the Women's Basketball Team. By my calculation, UP is IN for a Thursday afternoon game at approximately 2:15 - 2:30.PurplePrideTrumpet wrote:Well now! The best USF can do is tie us, and we've already beaten USF twice this year. So, regardless of the UP or SCU results, the Pilots will finish 6th or 7th, and #6 plays #7 30 minutes after the conclusion of the noon game on Thursday in Las Vegas.

Re: Final Run to the WCC Tournament
So, heading into Saturday, here’s the situation:
GU 13-2
BYU 12-3
USD 11-4
SMC 10-5
PU 8-7
SCU 4-11
UP 4-11
LMU 3-13
USF 3-12
There’s really nothing to decide in the final day of WCC Women’s Basketball play. GU and BYU will play for the regular season title, but GU already has the #1 seed and BYU the #2 seed in the tournament.
It will not be easy for the Pilots to beat SCU in the tournament, a team they’ve lost twice to this year, but if they do, they will likely next play USD in Las Vegas, there opponent on Saturday.
Remember, Saturday @ 2pm is SENIOR DAY at the Chiles Center; we’ll be saying goodbye to Natalie, ReZina, and NaKeisha, three really good players and outstanding ladies. We haven’t seen a player of Natalie’s abilities in recent years.

Re: Final Run to the WCC Tournament
The women lost to San Diego in a hard fought battle on Senior Day today. A few well know PN regulars were on hand to watch the women play very, very hard against #3 seeded USD. IF we could have hit our three-pointers it would have been a much different result, but we were abysmal!
IF we can beat SCU on Thursday, we’ll play USD again on Friday. (We’ve lost to both teams twice this year).
Here are the seedings and the plan for next week:
#1 GU 14-2
#2 BYU 12-4
#3 USD 12-4
#4 SMC 11-5
#5 PU 8-8
#6 SCU 5-11
