How about an update on FSU's season after they left Portland in August?

Wow

You are apparently a master at the thread killer question. I saw this in the AM and decided to let someone else start, ( maybe our friend from FSU?)

Here goes... My impression. I caveat it with the disclaimer that I don't really know much about their style of play other than the two games they played in Oregon and what appears to be their offensive emphasis since. Until the ACC tournament, they were middle of the pack. Then they found themselves a bit.

I thinK we will see a lot of the same style of play we saw in August. I also expect they are better at it.

But what you will see is a very strong defense and an attack predicated on the idea that they can let their fast forwards outrun the defense.

I sure don't expect they will dominate the midfield if we play at our best.

But as banged up as we are, it will mostly depend on us. If we play as we did against OSU, I'm calling it a coin flip.

Considering how beat up we were in the middle of the season and the new agression our midfield has shown that they didn't show in the last matchup, I like those odds.

It was surprising to me it took so long for someone to reply. I thought folks would be jazzed up about the topic and ready to share. Thanks for averting a shutout for me.

It should be a good game, no doubt about it. I am really looking forward to it, sure hope Memphis has decent announcers.

I was going to say something like "They played well enough to earn a 1 seed" but I hate to be smart on here (Oh who am I kidding?).

I've been busy all day doing my own "seeding" process for the NCAA Tournament, using only the criteria that are applicable to the at large selections. I just saw your post. Here is Florida State's regular season record, including the ACC Tournament. Since it isn't obvious, here's a key to the table:

Date/Florida State/ FSU goals/FSU Win/FSU Loss/FSU Tie/Opponent/Opponent goals/FSU Away/FSU Neutral/FSU Home

Code:
8/19/2011   FloridaState   1   1   0   0   OregonState   0   1   0   0

This from Chris Henderson at All White Kit:

Code:
-Portland’s Resilience

Some people were surely holding their nose at the thought of a 9-9-1 team making the Big Dance, but examining Portland’s season as a whole, it’s hard to not admire the resilience off this Pilots squad. Having already lost Kendall Johnson, one of their top players, to injury before the season, Portland would be left to fight more injury issues all season. There was also the little matter of replacing a cadre of all-stars from last year’s powerful team. It’s difficult to count the number of times UP could’ve been considered dead and buried this season. The shocking loss against Seattle. The draw against Washington that sealed a four match winless streak. The stretch of three losses in four that left the team 0-2-0 to begin the league season. The losses to Santa Clara and Pepperdine that perched Portland on the bubble going into Selection Monday. But survive they did, and the Pilots made the most of their second life heading into the postseason, banishing some of their penalty shootout demons after advancing over Oregon State in Corvallis. Portland already beat Florida State once this year. Who’s to say it couldn’t happen again?

One apparent change from earlier this year for FSU...

At some point during the season they apparently changed from the 4-4-2 we saw them in earlier this year to a 4-5-1 with Pressley in the middle of the back line instead of the outside.

I seem to recall she made a shift like that partway through our game with them.

So, I get into Nashville in the early evening yesterday and head to the REI store. Who’s the very first person I see -- a young lady wearing a UNIVERSITY OF PORTLAND SOCCER shirt. Wow, I think, we’re taking over the state just for the playoffs. She quickly informs me she hadn’t a clue the women were in Memphis and didn’t even know they were in the playoffs. “I like watching the DUDES” she tells me -- I have no good reply and continue my shopping --I guess not everyone is as jazzed as the guys on PN!
