Does anyone have an explanation of why Sophie was not drafted? Is there some separate selection process for non-US players?

Didn't think of Sophie. Anyway, she'll be busy training for/playing in the World Cup with Canada.

Re: Elli and Keelin both first round WPS draft picks!
Players had to have entered their names into the draft pool in order to be drafted. It's possible Sophie did not enter her name. The same is true of Jessica. For Sophie, it's also possible there's a separate process for players from other countries. Plus, with the World Cup this summer, she may not have wanted to be playing for a WPS team between now and then.
Does anyone have some inside information on Sophie and/or Jessica?

Re: Elli and Keelin both first round WPS draft picks!
I'm pretty sure Sophie and the rest of the Canadians will be Concentrating on the WWC and their victory tour
I wouldn't be at all surprised if Christine's WPS role is a lot more limited, and the WPS will be without the USA players a lot of the time. I'll also note no one has picked up Marta, and the WWC is probably a big part of that.
I'm not sure she has the same opportunity in the WPS anyway. Isn't the number of foreign players restricted?
I just assumed Jessica' 3.97 biology GPA meant she was headed to grad school.
A career in biology pays a lot better.

I wasn't thinking about it when I first posted, but I just realized that Tony Diccico is the coach for Boston, and he was crazy about Keelin in his post 2008 u20 WC report. Her made her the team captain, and She's the only player he expressly recommended for promotion to the full team in his post-cup report.
He was pretty high on Elli and Michelle, too.

On Marta, it could be two team have signed her to contracts, two team have folded due to financial difficulties. While she is a phenominal player and great fun to watch, at this point the WPS probably needs to err on the side of being fiscally conservative to stay afloat for another year.

Try to imagine an NBA in which no team can afford to sign LeBron.

Actually, that's pretty close to being the case.

There may not BE an NBA this time next year, so they have something in common with WPS.Purplegeezer wrote:purple haze wrote:Try to imagine an NBA in which no team can afford to sign LeBron.

I still think he's the best women's national team coach the US has ever had in terms of coaching fundamental technical soccer. I know that my classmate Milbrett really enjoyed playing for him.

Yeah, except for the fact that NBA owners can exaggerate their losses for teams that are really doing fine financially. In NBA accounting going from 8 million dollars in profit one year to 6 million the next = 2 million dollars in reported losses. It's pure bogus to report a smaller profit as being a loss. If the WPS even had those kinds of eggs to count, I'm sure the team owners would be thrilled.

Tony DiCicco does rule as a coach. Every soccer coach and fan should read his book "Catch Them Being Good."

Will Western New York make it 3 for 3?keeper wrote:On Marta, it could be two team have signed her to contracts, two team have folded due to financial difficulties. Re: Elli and Keelin both first round WPS draft picks!
Well, the good news is there's not much to do in Buffalo, so maybe more people will go to their soccer matches. And the owner of the Western NY team owns the company that is the official Hotdog of the WPS, so if a lot of people eat hot dogs, that may pay her salary. And the cost of living is probably cheaper in Western NY, so they can pay the rest of the players less money... Unfortunately, that probably doesn't fix what ails the other 5 teams.

Re: Elli and Keelin both first round WPS draft picks!
It's official. Marta will rejoin Christine (and join Elli and Alex Morgan) on the western NY Flash. The first year team will no doubt be favorites to win it all.

Yeah, the Flash may be able to score some goals. Hope the franchise is not a flash in the pan.
