NCAA reprimands wrestler
IN an official act of the NCAA wrestling games committe, an Iowa state wrestler was reprimanded publicly for shoving a guy after a match.

Now, I'm sure the guy was a jerk and embarrassment during the championships, but the NCAA never reprimanded Bobby Bowden or Woody Hays, or issued public reprimands for the countless embarrassments players and coaches in other sports have committed. All kinds of fights occur that don't need NCAA committee action. They were handled by ordinary rules enforcement, or in Hay's case, not by the NCAA at all, but by the school.
It just seems weird...

Yeah... at the top level? This seems like something that should be handled in house with the school, not putting the kid in the stocks of public opinion... I mean I'm sure the kid deserved some punishment (those wrestling matches can get brutal, and a lot of, um, unclean stuff goes unnoticed a lot), but yeah Geez this is a bit off...

I found the video on youtube. It was clearly a dangerous situation, but wouldn't have been nearly so had the winner not been doing handsprings. Action occurs about 4 mins in.

This might be due to the coverage that the sport was receiving at the time. I can't recall that I've ever seen college wrestling on as mainstream a channel as ESPN - or any channel at all, for that matter.

I'm pretty sure that I'd have done the same thing as the Iowa wrestler. From my point of view dude was showboating before the match was over.
Not saying it's right, just that I'd have probably done the same...

Disagree, the match was down to 2 seconds, it was over. Sounds like this was a David defeats Goliath situation, and I think the winner deserves a little exuberance. Kind of like a soccer team dogpiling on the field at the end of a big game while the other team is still walking off, perhaps??

I wrestled some in College. From my perspective, the kid in red put himself in jeopardy with that stunt. if somebody tried that with me I would have made sure he stayed down.
You can hear the announcer saying "he should just walk off, you've got to win right"
Having seen that, if you reprimand one kid, you've got to reprimand the other.
Now it seems even weirder.

I'm okay with some celebration in college sports. The wrestler was just celebrating, not gloating in my opinion. Although sometimes there's a fine line there...

Jake Locker doesn't see the big deal with celebrating.

We all know the cliche:

Yeah, I think upsets are a little bit different though. When a cinderella beats a powerhouse in basketball, it becomes okay for a player to jump onto the scorer's table...or for fans to rush the court. It's part of the beauty of college sports. Thrill of victory...agony of defeat. Both are a part of life...
If UP scores a defeat of UCLA or one of the power teams in our early season tourney next year (in men's basketball) I hope the players celebrate...and if someone jumps onto the scorer's table before the game clock winds down completely, I'm okay with it.

Before the game is over? No way. I honestly would be a little disappointed if that happened. After the game, well...I guess.
And definitely no crying before the game is over...

I personally would be so emotionally happy by the upset that I wouldn't care...
