World Cup Qualifying matches... Empty World Cup Qualifying matches...

Post by onetouchfutbol Mon Mar 30, 2009 4:40 pm

So, who watched the World Cup qualifying games on Saturday and Sunday? The 2-2 US vs. El Salvador game was actually a good result considering that the US came from behind to win on the road. Mexico also had a nice win against Costa Rica, and there were quite a few other good games on Sunday for various South American teams. I saw the US and Mexico games with a bit of carne asada and al pastor. Mmmmmmmmmm....

Here's a link to a nice site with nice video highlights coverage:

I saw the US comeback; they were down 1-0 when I turned it on. The local fan intensity was amazing.

US plays Trinidad & Tobago tonight on ESPN 2. The pregame is on right now: 4/1/09 at 4:48 pm... Maybe Heath Pearce will get some minutes. I like our chances with Howard back in goal...

PurpleGeezer--my condolences for Bolivia's 6-1 defeat of Argentina. Who saw that coming??? Dios Mio!

Nice hat trick by J. Altidore; he and Donovan played outstanding... It was interesting watching Jose Torres from Pachuca put in some minutes too toward the end of the game. Creative player.

They are calling it the worst Argentine defeat since Che Guevara took on the Bolivian Army...

Considering the happenings in Argentina this week, I think a lot of people saw it coming. The first division is half Buenos Aires teams, and last week Independiente fans hurled the worst epithet they could think of at their cross town rival Boca fans. (Boca has a lot of immigrant fans. In fact, they call themselves "Los Xeneises" - the Genoese)

They called the Boca 12th man "Bolivians and Paraguayans" and waved the flags of the two countries as an insult. It almost caused a riot, and the leaders of those countries demanded the AFA do something. The AFA is considering sanctions. Remember there was a border war years back over a Futbol game.

Today in La Paz, the largely native Bolivian fans were chanting ""Maya, paya, quimsa, pusi, peskha y sojta" which is "one two, three, four, five, six" in Qechwa, Guaraní and Aymara - native languages. Pretty odd, since one of the icons of Argentina's identity myth is Anahí, a Guaraní princess.

And you thought Red Sox fans chanting "Daryl, Daryl" was a big deal.

Another reason some saw it coming was that Riquelme is feuding with Maradonna and isn't on "La Selección" at the moment. Maradonna had a squad that the midfield and attack were all little guys about his size. Some wags called it the Wendy's team.

Remember "where's the beef"?

Their coach just got fired. Mexico is underachieving. Honestly though, they are just a better team at Azteca than anywhere else. Eventhough the US beat Mexico in the last meeting, they will probably lose when they play at Azteca (Mexico City) in August...

Very interesting history there, PurpleGeezer.

I'm sure you saw the news earlier this week that Aguirre was hired...

-------------------------

What are Heath Pierce's chances of making the US National Team squad for the World Cup? Coach Bradley really jumbled up the lineup for the last game, having Landon Donovan play midfield and Beasely play left defender instead of Pierce.

As an example of generational gap, I would have picked Hank.

Here's a bit on Javier:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Javier_Aguirre

I had no idea that he had played for both America and the Chivas. That's like playing for both the Lakers and Celtics or Red Sox and Yankees. Interesting...

--------------------------

So, it's been 3 games and still no goals against Keller. How many games will he get to until the streak comes to an end?
