A biggie for our hosting chances, Washington State beat Cal 2:1


milder upsets are Rutgers losing to St John's, Lousville losing to Marquette,

Not exactly an upset, but Santa Clara and St. Mary's tied tonight 1:1, effectively ending SCU's post season hopes unless they win the conference.

Not really a cause for celebration. With nothing to lose, it just makes them more dangrous.

Yeah, whenever I think of this rivalry I can't help harken back to the 1998 season. We went down there starting 8 freshmen and got absolutely pounded 8-0. That may have been the worst beating we ever took.

It wasn't so much the shellacking, it was that they kept their starters in and Mandy Clemens celebrated every goal in front of Clive and the UP bench like they were the Giants and just beat the Dodgers for the pennant. There were a couple of opportunities when we could have returned the favor, but I don't think either Clive or the current staff have it in them to do it.

In UP's case, it turned out OK. Count ahead four years to 2002, and those freshmen who took the beating were seniors. Think that was incentive?

It would be extremely out of character for Clive or his teams to behave like that. I'd rather win a one-goal match for a title than pound teams in the regular season anyway.

It's funny you mention that terrible 8-0 beatdown, Geezer. Jerry Smith mentioned that game recently in an interview he gave... something in which he was bellyaching about how that Santa Clara team was obviously the best in the country but didn't win the title. I'll try to track it down... it made me roll my eyes at how he just had to mention that game.

Whatever... we got our sweet, sweet revenge in 2002.
