Is there an official crew team at UP
After watching the olympics I thought UP would be a great loc to have a crew team. Plenty of flat water and we could kick some ive league butt.

No crew yet as a scholarship sport. There is a crew club, and they are actually pretty good.
here's a direct crib from their web page.

There have been rumors that UP will go varsity when we have possession of the lower waterfront property and can build our own facilities.

UP Crew finished its Spring 2008 season with a solid performance at the WIRA (Western Intercollegiate Rowing Association) Championship Regatta this weekend in Sacramento, California.
UP's only varsity boat that raced, the women's pair, took first in their heat and had the fastest time out of both heats, then medaled at second place in the grand finals on Sunday.

Re: Is there an official crew team at UP
Larry Williams talked with the SAAC (Student Athlete Advisory Committee) two weeks ago about this issue. The school is currently looking to add either women's crew or women's lacrosse. He said that the athletic department wants to make sure it can take on either sport fully, without taking away from the current sports (like scholarship moneys). The WCC is pushing for us to add crew, but ultimately it is the athletic department's decision!
Re: Is there an official crew team at UP
It only seems natural that we would have crew teams... due to the campus location and mascot... Having our own facilities, on the new lower campus would be sweet!

I thought the new logo was supposed to include representation of the Willamette flowing through the 'P'. Crew seems logical.

Not only logical... but would require little in the way of new facilities, unless you turned the practice field into a LAX venue or something like that... I mean basically you need a boathouse and perhaps some indoor training facility for inclement weather training (of course made very easy after buying that lot of land...)
My question is, if they build there, where are they going to film the sequel to The Hunted?? The first one was SO good I can't wait for work on the second one to rattle the Bluff with simulated gunfire and explosions!!

Women's Lacrosse would require a bit of an investment to do it right. The NCAA recommends an artificial surface for both Men's and Women's LaCrosse. The ball bounces so much more consistently that it's a different game on Turf. All the top programs now play on Turf, and most have dedicated fields for it. I can think of one top program at a school about the size of UP that has separate men's and women's Turf Lacrosse stadiums, and a separate Turf Field Hockey stadium (also NCAA recommended), And it's now D3! That's about $100K per field surface.
I think the tournament rules may even be like the soccer rules, except reversed. A team can refuse to play on a grass field in the tournament, much like a soccer team can refuse to play on Turf under certain conditions.
I'm not sure that Pru Field would qualify, as it looks a little small, and I'm not sure the soccer program would want to share it. At a Minimum, it would need to be fenced, or the auto liability increased
