Certainly an "underwhelming" hire... interesting that they went with an East Coast coach. Neutral

I hope that USF can get things straightened out, but it really seems like there are issues in that Athletic Dept. that are deeper than the hoops coach...

Yeah... I'm not entirely sure about this one. Apparantly he grew up in San Jose, so he does have Bay Area roots.

His record at Florida Atlantic isn't all that impressive, though it's probably similar to putting up that kind of record at a school like Portland or LMU... I don't think FAU is a very strong program in the Sun Belt, so it's probably tough to put up a good record. It's pretty new to D1, as far as I remember.

Then again, he is young, a former NBA player, and played at a big-time program in college. Pretty much sounds exactly like Michael Holton, really, except 10 years younger and without as much experience as an asst. but +2 years as a head coach. So I could see it potentially working out... I still feel like UP was really close to turning the corner with the talent Holton brought in before it all kind of fell apart.

Still, it's definitely a bit out of left field. He must have been really impressive in the interviews, that's for sure.

Well, I admire his enthusiasm, but I think it will be a while before he can hang any banners at War Memorial Gym. The way coaches have been going in this conference he may not be there long enough to get the chance.

It may be--and no offense to Walters--that this is the best hire they could make with all the ongoing issues.
