Pilots vs Santa Clara, Monday 3/11, 2:30pm, ESPN+

The #3 seed Pilots off their big win over LMU and a day of rest face the #2 seed Broncos.  The teams split the regular season, Pilots won by 10 at home in January and Broncos won by 8 there in February during the women's 4-game slump near the end of the season.  Santa Clara is 24-7 overall.  They are on a 9-game win streak.  Their last game was March 2nd. Soph G Tess Heal scores almost 20 ppg, and had 19 and 24 in her games against UP.

ESPN+.  I miss BYU-TV.  Not BYU, just their TV coverage of the tournament.

Former Pilot Keeley Frawley has been a starter for SCU all season, and in the two games against her former team this season she scored a combined 16 points and grabbed 13 rebounds.

Keeley will not be playing in today's game UP because she has now finished her collegiate playing days by forgoing the WCC Tournament to attend her sister's wedding in Australia.

When I spoke with Keeley a couple of weeks ago, she mentioned that she did not expect to play more basketball after finishing at Santa Clara, but was looking forward to playing her dad's sport, Australian Rules Football.

An 18 point first half, and a 45 point second half! That's some adjusting.

When I posted about the poor start, the Pilots were shooting 2-11, 18.2%. After that point they were 20-41, 48.8%.

In the only year they did not win 20 games (2020-21) under Meek, the Pilots represented the WCC in the Women's Invitational Tournament in Frankfort, Kentucky by beating Abilene Christian and Northern Arizona before losing the Championship game in a heartbreaker to Cleveland St.

Over a beer or two in Las Vegas we were talking about how Keeley Frawley was such a fan favorite during her four years at UP before transferring to SCU for her graduate year.

Over those beers, it was concluded that Keeley played a huge role in the Pilots beating GU for the WCC Championship this season.

How?  Because if Keeley had been in the SCU lineup against UP instead of at her sister's wedding in Australia, it would have been much more difficult for UP to overcome the 16-point deficit they faced to beat SCU and play GU the next afternoon.  

Beer brings clarity to most sports stories...

WRONG!!

When that was written, Keeley thought her college career was over, but SCU was invited to the inaugural WBIT and tonight they hosted BYU out the Big-12.

A back-and-forth game all the way, Tess Heal hit a layup with 4 seconds left, and BYU missed the second of two free-throws as time expired and SCU won, 60-59.

What about Keeley?  After playing a solid 35 minutes and scoring 8 points on 50% shooting, she now has at least one more college game to play.

Where the BYU men seemed to gain respect in the Big-12, the women did not fare as well. They tied for 9th in conference at 6-12, and were 16-16 overall going into the WBIT game. Big drop from the WCC where they appeared in the tournament championship game seven of eleven years winning three times.

Good on Keeley for coming back to help SCU win their game.

Injured?  Just speculating, but Keeley did not play in SCU's final game of the season as the Broncos get slashed by the Cougars from WSU, 73-47.

SCU finishes the season with 25 wins, the second most in program history, trailing only the 1990-91 team that went 28-3 and won the WNIT.
