St. Mary's 10/31

Post by A_Fan on Sun Oct 27, 2013 12:57 pm

The game this Thursday is listed with a 2:30 start time. It appears St. Mary's has a video feed, however it is a pay option. The cost is $7.95 for a month.

Anyone know anything about the quality of their feed?

We've watched few of their games including our men's overtime loss there few weeks ago. †Because of the camera angle/positioning, you won't be able to see the actions in either side of the near-side corners. †Adequate at best but better than not seeing the game at all! Go Pilots!!!

People are getting serious rest. Saturday off. We should be ready for Santa Clara next week.

Saint Mary's is out shooting UP 7-5. If I am reading the stats correctly.

The Pilots seemed a half a step slow to me. They seemed to be laying off the St. Mary's players which seemed odd because the SM's girls were not particularly fast. For the first 30 minutes of the 2nd half the Pilots were out played and the announcer on the broadcast said he thought they looked tired. The field looked awful. Large area's with no grass in front of the goals and rough all around. Even the announcer mentioned that the field was in poor condition. The picture on the broadcast wasn't too bad, however the camera work was sub par. The ball and play were off screen a lot and they didn't use their zoom capabilities very much so most of the play on the far side of the field was hard to follow. I have no idea what happened to cause the penalty kick, there was no replay and the announcer was just thrilled that they got the kick so did not describe what happened. All three Pilot goals were on nice shots. Parker's was exceptional, it tucked right into the upper left hand corner of the goal.

No. 11 Pilots Score Early and Cruise to 3-1 Win at Saint Maryís

MORAGA, Calif. --- Portland freshmen Allison Wetherington and Danica Evans scored a goal and had an assist, Ellen Parker notched the game-winner and the No. 11 Pilots defeated the Saint Maryís Gaels 3-1 in a West Coast Conference womenís soccer game played on Thursday afternoon at Saint Maryís Stadium. Both Wetherington and Parker scored in the first half, while Evansí insurance came in the second stanza.

Portland improves its record to 14-2-1 overall and to 6-1-0 in the WCC. Saint Maryís drops to 6-11-0 and to 2-4-0 in the conference.

After the opening whistle, Portland quickly went on the attack. The Pilots gained possession following the Saint Maryís kickoff, leisurely worked the ball up field, and scored in the second minute, courtesy the fourth goal of the season by Wetherington.

It was Evans who fed Wetherington with a through ball inside the left edge of the box, and Wetherington drilled a shot that grazed the right post on its way into the back of the net. Itís the second goal this season to come within the gameís first two minutes for Wetherington, who scored 1:02 into the match against Nevada on Sept. 13.

Then in the 28th minute, the Pilots scored off a corner kick for the first time this season. On a delivery from Wetherington, the ball fell to the feet of Parker, who stayed composed and hit it just right inside the left post. The goal is the fifth this season for Parker, while Wetherington picked up her fourth assist.

In the 43rd minute, UP goalkeeper Erin Dees helped preserve the 2-0 lead with a big-time save. On a loose ball just in front of Portlandís goal, Melinda Madden drilled a shot from six yards out. Dees somehow knocked the shot away before the Gaels were called a for hand ball, ending the threat and allowing the Pilots to take a 2-0 lead into the halftime locker room.

The Gaels would get one back in the 53rd minute when they were awarded a PK. Dees guessed right, but Samantha Dion was able to sneak the PK inside the left post to pull the Gaels within 2-1.

The game would remain 2-1 in Portlandís favor until Evans returned to the Portland line-up in the 80th minute and immediately made an impact. Noelle La Prevotte fed a great ball ahead to Ellie Boon, who sent a cross into the center of the box. Thatís where Evans took a touch and finished just under the crossbar to make it 3-1.

Itís the third goal of the year for Evans, who was one of six freshmen to start for the Pilots.

Four of Portlandís eight shots were on-goal, while the majority of the 13 shots for Saint Maryís came from outside the 18-yard box.

Dees finished with three saves, while Kaeli Schmidt made just one stop for the Gaels, which came on a shot off the foot of Wetherington during the first half.

The Pilots next conclude the regular season with a pair of WCC games at Merlo Field next week. On Thursday, Portland hosts conference foe and No. 9 Santa Clara at 8 p.m. in a game that will broadcast nationally on ESPNU.

UP then hosts San Francisco on Saturday in the season finale.

Weatherington Kicked the corner that Parker scored on. Our first score on a corner of the year. Perhaps she should continue to take those. Frisbee would then be in a position to perhaps score.

Just an idea, not saying that this one corner means W is better than F at corners or anything like that.

As to the relaxed defense, maybe no one wanted to put more energy than necessary into a game they were confident they would win. Biggest game so far of the year is a week away. Lets have everyone relaxed, restored and rested.

Wetherington has been taking many of the corners in recent weeks, even when Frisbie was in the game. Especially since Cruz's injury. She has had some good placements but folks have not made good connections. Hopefully this will open the floodgates.
