A stat to make you wonder Empty A stat to make you wonder

Post by oh brody Tue Feb 15, 2011 12:59 pm

From Coach Reveno's twitter today

"A stat to make you wonder. We are 9-1 when we turn the ball over more than 21% of poss. We are 9-7 when turn it over less than 21%."

This one has me a little perplexed. The boys play better when they are aggressive and crazy? scratch

Any other thoughts out there? "Talk amongst yourselves"

Odd, for sure.

My guess is this - our team plays best when it's out and running in transition; which means that we're making stops on the defensive end.

That may lead to more turnovers with bad passes and things like that, but it also will lead to more open shots.

Because of our point guard situation and the fact that our wing players (Jared and Nem) are more shooters than creators, I feel like we can get bogged down in the half-court game. And we generally end up in a half-court offense after made baskets.

We may not turn it over as much in that scenerio, but that means maybe we're giving up points on the other end and we're not getting as quality of shots on offense.

Or maybe I just made that whole thing up? I really don't know...

Interesting that you point out that we end up in a half court offense after a made basket by the other team. I think this is completely true, but need not be the case. If we're better when we get out and run (which I think is to an extent true), then grab the ball out of the net and throw in a quick outlet pass!!! I hate sulking and slowly bringing the ball up the court when the other team hits a bucket. Take Gonzaga for example: oftentimes they just deflate teams (especially in past years) because about 2.3 seconds after you've made a basket and are feeling pretty good, they have just scored a lay-up or tip-dunked a missed fast break opportunity. It kills you.

So maybe they should just purposefully throw the ball away on the first 10 or so possessions?

Yeah, it sounds more like a style of play thing than a turnovers issue to me. I'd throw that stat into the garbage. In the last game, we only had 12 turnovers and we beat the opponent by a lot of points. We need Douglas and company to keep running and cut down the turnovers.
