Tonight's other big game

Post by PilotNut on Thu Jan 29, 2009 11:46 am

SMC at GU... the battle for first place in the WCC.

Thoughts?

I think GU gets the win, being at home... but I expect it to be quite close... I will say GU by 4. I guess we should want this game to go to about 5 overtimes, to make sure the Gaels are good an tired for Saturday night... Wink

I think as long as the Zags are at home, they will always be the favorite, but this year SMU definitely has the best chance of taking them out on their home floor... It will take a combination of foul trouble, poor shooting and general mental lapses (which this edition of the Zags seems awfully prone to do), but SMU most definitley has the talent to take advantage of just such a situation....

This is tough for me. I think that Gonzaga has, by far, more talent and depth than SMC. The problem with trying to defend Gonzaga, os who do you focus on? Anyone in the group of Heytvelt, Gray, Pargo, Daye, Bouldin, or Downs off the bench can score in bunches. With SMC, you've got Mills as the go to guy, with Simpson and Samham being good supporting cast. SMC will need O'Leary and Hughes to step up there game a bit I think.

BUT, the zags just don't seem to play that team ball that got them where they are now. I'm not sure why (well, I have a theory), but they don't play the team offense and tenacious defense that made them nearly unstoppable in WCC play. Now they have an abundance of talent, but a team like SMC, who plays the team ball, may be the "better" team. I will be very interested in this game tonight too!

Did anyone watch the Wake game last night (I refuse to write the name of the team they played)? At halftime they did a breakdown of the Gaels, it was kind of nice to see for those of us on the East Coast. I am going to try and stay up tonight and watch the game, but I don't know, I have a big day tomorrow...drop the wife off at work, then pick her up 8 hours later.
As far as a pick goes, I am going out on a limb and going with the Gaels. I think SMC and GU split, each winning on the road. But only one goes to the conference finals, where they lose to the PILOTS!!!! And the Pilots get put into the Eastern Regional and play in Boston, and I pay $500 for one ticket just so I can see them play in the tourney!
But first things first...beat USD!

Yeah I did see that breakdown, of SMU absolutely breaking down San Diego... And what a sweet victory that was over the team that must not be named!! BTW how awesome was that one footed fade-away leaner by Jeff Teague right at the end of the first half??

I'm going out on a limb, St. Mary's by 5. Patty Mills blows by Jeremy "underachieving" Pargo many times. If he doesn't get the bucket he passes to Samhan,Simpson, or any off-guard on roster who are all excellent 3 pt shooters. Mills is the key if he doesn't have a good game, the Zaggetes will win. Daye,Downs and Heyfelt are too good of shot-blockers to try and pound it inside all the time unless one or the other get's in foul trouble. Plus they have that big . clumsy average backup Foster who's only talent at 7'4" is blocking shot's and dunking. I have never seen a team (Gonzaga) do so little with so much talent(look at their play in Florida tourney they should be in the top 10 at least with their talent)...... Rev, Grier, and Bennet have all coached circle's around Pew this year. He has a bunch of talented "crybaby's", who could all learn from their backup Ira Brown how to play the game like it's suposed to be played. Bouldin has improved his effort during game's this year, and his god-awful flat 3 pt shot's seem to be going in so he can post more.
Gonzaga will win if Daye plays up to his potential, and Gray get's hot. If this happen's it will be a long night for the Gael's unless Mill's score's 40 points.

Gonzaga was a much better team with that red Head "Pendo" last year. They might not have had as much "experienced" talent. But, they were led by a Senior who overachieved and the whole team did not whine so much and play for their own stat's every game. St. Mary's is improved over last year and may just sneak away with a win at the stinkin Dog House.

Its a shame that Gonzaga has "choked" so many times in March as they are clearly the front-runner of the WCC every year.......they should be in the "sweet sixteen" every year if their coach could get all that talent to play good the whole year. This is the Gael's best year to win until they "reload" again.

"Big Game" Libbey for final four referee cheers

Hard to say... Even if it is a sprain, it was on his shooting hand, I'd mark him as questionable right now...

That really sucks for Patty... he is such a stud. I would much rather beat SMC with him on the floor.... Wink

Mill's was on his way to 40 until Jeremy "underachieving" Pargo bumped him to the ground. Isn't that Zag student body scratch , i GUESS when you go to school in BFE you can act like a pig . St Mary's looks rattled and you can't blame it on McConnell(Kramer's HS teamate) he's distributing.
Samhan looks slower than Bryant, it looks like he's walking in cement on offense. Simpson's having a hard time carrying the Gael's on his back.

Oh well maybe our student body can make some noise and I wish they would start acting a little like cyclops on Saturday.I think the adult's made 1000 times the noise as the students from a radio perspective. An assist to the general public ticket holder's ,Pilot Nation regular attendee's commended. Razz

Well, if he isn't 100% I'll take the good break. We've had more than our share of bad breaks over the years. Of course, even without Mills SMC is still good. Take nothing for granted!
