Around the WCC

The WCC teams won their season openers at home tonight, but the only "blowout" was #6 Gonzaga over #8 Baylor, 101-63 in Spokane.

The Zags win propelled them from #9 to #2 in the KenPom rankings...while Baylor dropped from KP #11 to #26.

Santa Clara beat St. Louis, SMC beat Towson, OSU beat Utah Tech, and in the most fun game to watch, both WSU and PSU scored 54 points in the second half, but WSU was the winner 100-92.

In other games, LMU beat Life Pacific and UOP beat Jessup U.

Cal Poly gave USF all they could handle tonight, but the Dons, favored by 20, controlled the inside game with blocks and second chance points in the paint in its 86-78 victory.

USD hosted Rider from the MAAC conference, and lost 68-67. Rider was led by a 6th year player (4 at UMass, 2 at Rider).

It was the second game of the season for Rider, having lost at UCLA by 30 points two nights before.

In another game, Pepperdine downed Western Illinois in Malibu, 77-64.  This was also WI's second game after defeating a pretty good San Jose St. team on Monday.

On Friday 11/08:
SCU lost to Arizona St. 81-74 at a neutral site
UOP beat San Jose St. 80-67 in the Rainbow Classic
USD beat Boston U. 70-60 at home
LMU lost to UC Irvine 66-51 at home
OSU beat Weber St. 76-48 at home
WSU beat Bradley 91-74 at home

Arizona State led late, but Gonzaga prevailed, 88-80, in Spokane.

No. Arizona beat UOP in Stockton 60-57.

Don't be fooled by the 10 point defeat WSU suffered at the hands of Iowa today, they led most of the game before letting it slip away.

Fullerton led OSU at the half, 32-25, but the Beavers prevailed, 70-51.

GU smothered UMass-Lowell, 113-54.

On Saturday, Idaho St. defeated USD in SoCal 78-66.
St. Louis beat LMU at home 77-71.
Nevada beat SCU 85-59 at home. Broncos now 1-3.
USF walloped Chicago St. at home 82-37.
UC Irvine beat PU at home 80-62.
Tough night for the WCC.

On a neutral court, SMC gave Nebraska their first defeat 77-74.

Monday 11/18:
WSU beat No. Colorado in Pullman 83-69.
Arkansas beat UOP 91-72 at home.
GU went to San Diego St. and beat them 80-67.

Tuesday 11/19:
SCU blasted UC Riverside 96-54 at home. After 3 straight losses, they took it out on UCR.

Wednesday 11/20:

The Beach must have been exhausted after losing to the Pilots and lost in Spokane, 84-41.

UNLV hosted Pepperdine and led the Waves 46-17 at halftime before prevailing, 80-59.

And SMC, mimicking the SEC football teams*, scheduled a cupcake in DII CSU Stanislaus. The game was tied 4-all before the Gaels outscored them 40-15 to finish the 1st half, and 34-20 in the 2nd half for a 78-38 win.

*e.g. Mercer vs Alabama; Wofford vs. So. Carolina; UMass vs Georgia, etc.

So UP also mimicking SEC football w game against Lewis and Clark? Except we didn’t blow them out, so in that sense we didn’t mimic.

Yeah, that's right, but SMC regularly gets grief (at least from GU fans) for weak scheduling, while only a few of us care about the UP scheduling.

Thursday 11/21:
OSU lost to Oregon 78-75. OSU led most of the way but lost the lead in the late going.
USF lost to Memphis 78-74 in San Francisco.
WSU beat EWU 96-81.

Not a good night for the WCC:

UP was a 7.5 underdog and lost to Ohio by 12.
UOP was a 20.5-point underdog and lost by 35 to Missouri on the road.
PU was an 18.5-point underdog at Northwestern and lost by 18.
LMU was at home and favored by 10.5 points to beat North Dakota but and ended up losing by 4.
USD was a 1.5 underdog to Southern Utah and lost at home by 5.

After winning their first three D-1 games, Oregon St. lost a heartbreaker to UO last Thursday, 78-75, and tonight they hung tough on the road at North Texas before falling, 58-55.

Likewise, USF has been playing well, losing only to Memphis, 68-64, before getting crushed, 70-55, by Clemson in Daytona Beach tonight.

On Tuesday 11/26:
USF beat Fordham at a neutral site 85-64
LMU beat Belmont at a neutral site 77-63
PU lost at home to Cal St. Fullerton 72-63
WSU beat Fresno St. at a neutral site 84-73

And "The Win That Got Away" Oregon beat #20 Texas A&M 80-70 at a neutral site. UO is now 6-0.

GU took their 1st loss today against West Virginia in a tournament in the Bahamas.  They were up 8 at half, but WVU quickly tied it up, then it was close to the end and went to OT, where WVU outscored the Zags 15-7.  Final was 86-78.

In a late game, USD struggled against D-3 Marian U. from Wisconsin, but prevailed, 69-64, after Marian was within one point at the 3 minute mark.
In other action, LMU beat Wyoming in Cancun, 73-70, after leading by 10 at the half.
UOP beat Pine Bluff in Stockton, 83-71, after being down by one point at the half.
In Palm Desert, SMU beat WSU, 77-60, after outscoring the Cougars, 50-29 in the second half.

We heard that USC beat GU in a preseason scrimmage, but today SMC embarrassed the Trojans in Palm Desert, 71-36!!

GU beat #14 Indiana, 89-73, in the Bahamas while SCU upset TCU in Palm Springs, 69-52.
