NIL Follies Empty NIL Follies

Post by up7587 Wed Sep 25, 2024 3:46 pm

Three games into an undefeated season, the quarterback for the UNLV Rebels has decided to withdraw from the team, use his red-shirt year, and enter the transfer portal. He came to UNLV via the portal from the Holy Cross Crusaders, where he played four seasons including the covid shortened 2020. (Note: the College of Holy Cross is a Jesuit school in MA, not affiliated with the UP Holy Cross order.)

The QB, Matthew Sluka, is making this move because he says he was offered $100,000 in NIL money by an assistant coach to transfer to UNLV, and the money was never delivered. Now I just saw a note that a UNLV RB is doing the same thing.

College sports keeps getting stranger and stranger.

CBS Sports article about NIL issues in college basketball.

Bad collective directors are the most dangerous thing to a success of a program. Imagine you're a head coach at a high-major school, you've worked so hard to build relationships with agents, AAU coaches, players and build a reputation, and there's some guy who you didn't hire and has a big ego and he's trying to battle agents over details that don't matter.

https://www.si.com/college/lsu/recruiting/lsu-wbb-recruiting-the-latest-buzz-on-the-no-1-prospect-in-america-aaliyah-chavez-01j8n759c09n

Aalyah  Chavez, the No.1 high school  wbb recruit, initially committed to LSU, but then demanded a $1 million NIL package. LSU refused so she is back on the market,. If the reports  are to be believed. Now other institutions of higher learning are stepping up, apparently including Texas.  Recruiting is a different world.

Just wondering whether an NIL offer played any part in our own signed recruit Eshoo leaving town this summer before she had stepped foot in a classroom?

Call it what you will, but beginning now and for the next few years the college landscape is being redefined.  UVa former coach Bennet's resignation because of the "professional model" in college sports is but another sign.

No, it did not.

However, with six players graduating this spring, including five starters, NIL will certainly be in the picture over the next couple of years or until the NCAA gets a handle on the outrageous number of dollars being thrown around.

Thank you for the information and the response. While not being widely discussed, one possible regulation which may help the problem: a "sunshine" like rule. Consumers and taxpayers, and fans, should all know the extent and amount of NIL money being paid college players, particularly from businesses they patronize. Uncle Phil may not like the rule, nor will any large universities shelling out this kind of money, but the initial step in grappling with the problem may be understanding its extent. As it is both players and schools are resisting the release of data, citing a myriad of reasons. Here in Oregon we have a "sunshine" statute already, yet we do not generally know the amounts being paid at state schools, like UO. Perhaps this is something of a naive proposal, but as a first step I am all.for it. I am unconvinced by the argument that donors paying players are unassociated with a school, or not directed in any manner. Likewise, I would hope such a requirement survives a first amendment challenge: a consequence of accepting the money would be its disclosure.
