UP had to overcome some unusual circumstances to win a postseason contest for the second year in a row. The Pilots didn’t have Carlin-Voigt on the sideline for the first 45 minutes of the match. The seventh-year head coach served a suspension due to what a Portland administrator termed “administrative sanctions by the NCAA.”

Nick, as the coach, apparently had to take the punishment because one of the teenagers on the UP bench was posting video of the UCR walk-through on social media.

Innocuous but illegal, apparently. I will leave it to Sore Knees to adjudicate.

Not sure if Nick used that same phone to watch the first half, but it's now in the past and a lesson was learned.

I'm not sure I have any expertise here, but there are regulations about electronic communication from and to the bench. They change frequently and differ by competition, so I have no idea what the current college rules are. But it's an explanation that seems logical.

Great defense tonight in Corvallis where the Beavers only had one shot on frame.

Jacob Babalai opened the scoring with a nice assist from Cambridge around the 77th minute, and then Muslim Umar finished it off about 10 minutes later.

Washington was beaten 3-1 by Creighton.

Moving on!

UP got two late goals from Babalai( Cambridge) and Umar ( unassisted)

OSU looked better in the first half but didn’t sub players and I think they paid for that late.

So we get another home match against Western Michigan who upset 9th ranked Lipscomb

Quicker on the draw.

And the next round is at Merlo!

Pilots basketball at Memorial Coliseum during the day and Pilots soccer at Merlo in the late/dark afternoon.

I believe the PKI games are Thursday, Friday and Sunday. No Saturday game.

Thanks for the correction, I was looking at the women's game in Florida vs. Northeastern.

Yes, the men play in the Moda Center on Thursday and the Coliseum on Friday.  Sunday is TBD, but likely in the Chiles Center for the consolation game unless there is a BIG upset.

Since we'll both be at the Western Michigan (16-2-2) game, someone else will likely post before we even get in our cars to drive home...

With a win next Saturday, would that mean that undefeated and #1 Kentucky (15-0-5) would likely be on the horizon?

Maybe.
Maybe not.

#2 UW just got pasted 3-1 by  Creighton, who was #30 in the RPI.

Best just to focus on next weekend.

It’s interesting that 7 of the sweet16 teams left come from the unranked group.
And two of the top ranked teams in the four quadrants of the bracket went out in their first match.

Thankfully, the Broncos -winners of their last three games on the road -have embraced what it means to be the road warriors that come in and spoil everything for the home team.

The Broncos have only lost one game on the road all season: an August 25th showdown with Butler in Indianapolis.

Two of the seven are playing at Merlo tonight, and it could be a doozy!

UP's RPI is 31 while Western Michigan's is 33.

The #18 Pilots, 14-2-3, on the season, were second to USD in the WCC. (USD, RPI 95, was knocked out in the first round at Denver and Denver then lost at Duke in the second round).
UP beat UC Riverside at home and OSU in Corvallis to reach the Sweet 16.


The Western Michigan Broncos are 16-2-2 on the season, winning the MAC.
They beat Louisville and Lipscomb to reach this point in the tournament.

Nick has said more than once that WMU is VERY physical, while indicating it could end up looking like UP's ugliest game this season, the 2-2 tie with Central Arkansas on August 26th.

(Central Arkansas ended up 6-5-6 with a 47 RPI)

Unless the referee(s) take control tonight, the Pilots are going to have to be just as physical as their opponent...something I think they are now more capable of than they were in August.

Didn't see the Central Arkansas game, but seems the ugliness hit a peak near the end and after the final whistle from the WMU bench.

Nonetheless, 1-0 ELITE EIGHT BOUND!
