Re: Spring ball 2022
Has anyone heard how the team did in their spring games in Washington over the weekend? There doesn't seem to be any news on the UP website.

The results are listed in the ‘Results” section on portlandpilots.com and tacked on the end of last year’s schedule.
The first game against W, Washington was 0-0
The second game over UBC was a 1-0 win the next day.
The score was a Putback by Cally Togiai off a Nadia Nadim shot that came off the keeper.
Apparently everyone healthy got minutes.
Next up- March 19 against Corbin at home.

Re: Spring ball 2022
If you need a women’s soccer fix this weekend, Saturday’s game against Corban is scheduled for 1:00 PM.

Re: Spring ball 2022
Pilots had to shake out the cobwebs that allowed an early breakaway goal by Corban.
After a few minutes the Pilots settled in and went on to beat Corban 8-1.
I lost track of all the scorers, but Sawan and K.Adams looked particularly impressive.

Re: Spring ball 2022
An update on Saturday’s games.
The three- team day of competition starts at Noon with UP vs OSU.
This is to be followed by both teams having scrimmages against Puget Sound, presumably to get more players some time on the ball. I’m not sure what the format would be, but presumably something like each team playing a half.
The NCAA allows 5 days of competition in the Spring, but doesn’t limit how much you play each of those days.

Re: Spring ball 2022
The scrimmages against the Beavers and Puget saw each team play a half against each of the other teams.
First up was UP-Beavs whisk was a 0-0 result after 45. The beavers came out strong, the Pilots finished with slightly better chances.
UP - Loggers was all Pilots with an 8-0 result. I didn’t keep notes so just assume everyone scored.
I left before the beavers came back to play their other half against Puget Sound.
Next up, the Ducks on Saturday April 9 at 4:00 PM

Re: Spring ball 2022
The women closed out spring ball by hosting the ducks in a somewhat oddly formatted game that featured two thirty minute and one twenty minute period which may have been shortened because of an injury which took a while to deal with.
Both teams used virtually their entire squads, near as I could tell, so it probably isn’t an indication or of how a regular season will go but players got a chance to lobby for a starting role next spot.
The game was pretty well played. With both teams getting some chances. The best Ducks try was a blast from distance that rattled the crossbar. The Pilots just failed to convert several chances. the Pilots started out a bit slow with some players clearly not comfortable in the roles they were in but as the game wore on they became more comfortable and controlled the midfield more and passed better.
UP struggled a bit at the start of the third period so the starters came back in. That resulted in a nice Kayla Adams Header off a cross for the only score of the match. Final 1-0
I think this fall will see a more aggressive midfield, some better passing, a willingness to commit to the final third, and some more attacking help for Sawan, especially from Adams. Too bad she was out last year. The addition of the incoming class is sure to help round out the squad.

Re: Spring ball 2022
Good assessment, Geezer.
I am really looking forward to Adams playing hard and with confidence. I know she has been somewhat disappointed with her role and play to this point, so it would be nice to see her cap off her time on The Bluff with a chance at the NCAAs.
Good thing they did not try to play today...

Re: Spring ball 2022
I find it interesting that despite playing the whole squad most games, the team only gave up one goal all Spring, and that was in an 8-1 rout ( it was a great strike from distance by a Corban player, btw.)
