Re: Kendal Johnson
I've missed her defensive skills, but the Thorns have made great improvement in that category this season. I do hope she continues to write...I've been thoroughly entertained by her wit.

Re: Kendal Johnson
Kendall's back, has played in at least the last two of the Thorns' pre-season games. Didn't look so good against the U23s, but had a good game against the Houston Dash last weekend. In the Dash game, she started and was subbed in for, in about the 60th minute, by -- another Pilot -- Ellie Boon!
I was out of town, so not at the game this past weekend, but I watched the game on YouTube, to see how Ellie did. (Google YouTube Thorns v Dash) I think she did really well -- no mistakes and a bunch of well connected passes. Unfortunately, her chances of making the regular roster don't seem so good -- she's got Klingenberg and Kendall ahead of her at left D. But, she may make the "taxi" squad. She definitely looked like she can be an NWSL player.

I too was out of town and am glad to hear your assessment of Ellie's play. I hope to see her starting on an NWSL team some day soon.

Re: Kendal Johnson
No one has mentioned yet that Kendall and Christine just won the NWSL Chamoionship for the Thorns! How about that!

Not a particularly well-played game or exciting game to watch, but the result was a W and the "Chamoionship."SouthCarolinaPilot wrote:No one has mentioned yet that Kendall and Christine just won the NWSL Chamoionship for the Thorns! How about that!
Let's see, how many does that make for Christine here in Portland?
2002 Pilots, NCAA National Championship
2005 Pilots, NCAA National Championship
2013 Thorns, NWSL Championship
2017 Thorns, NWSL Championship
Probably one of the greatest athletes in modern Portland history, and a wonderful person too....we can claim her, can't we?

Christine, as you know, has fared pretty well with international competition as well.
I would expand your characterization to suggest that Christine is one of the greatest women's soccer players ever--maybe that is obvious. And, assuming you are referring to the U when you refer to "Portland," I find it hard to believe that there is a more accomplished athlete who played here than Christine, in a relative sense, of course. For my money, she is the number one Pilot athlete . . . that is not to slight the other fine athletes, greatly accomplished in their own rights, who have played on the Bluff, only to recognize how great Christine was and is. That she is, as you describe, a "wonderful person," doesn't hurt.

Re: Kendal Johnson
Just checked... Christine is #2 all-time on the international goal-scorers list with 168. She trails only Abby Wambach at 184.
Abby is retired now, but Christine is still active. Something tells me Canada will keep playing her until she decides to hang up her boots. It's possible she could one day pass Abby to become the #1 international goal scorer of all time.
(Worth noting - Tiffeny Milbrett is on that list at #15 with 100 international goals. Two of the top 15 goal scorers of all time are Pilots... not bad!)

Not with the Thorns it looks like.

Defender Kendall Johnson was the lone Portland Thorns player listed on the NWSL re-entry wire today, ending her Thorns tenure after an intermittent string of appearances over the past three seasons.
Over the last two of those seasons, Johnson struggled with match fitness, after suffering a serious concussion during her loan to Western Sydney in the 2015-2016 NWSL off-season. Johnson wrote about her injury detailing its severity, and her post-concussion symptoms appear to have been largely responsible for keeping her off the pitch in 2016 and may have continued to limit her playing time in 2017.
The Thorns organization has not yet added to the information released by the NWSL, so it is difficult to determine whether her release was part of a mutual parting-of-ways or whether Johnson had hoped to continue her progress in returning to the field but was not part of the club’s future plans.
Johnson, a Portland native, played here for her scholastic career, first for Lincoln High School and then for the Portland Pilots. During her college career, she also appeared for both the U.S. U-20 and U-23 national teams. Sky Blue signed her after graduation in 2013, and she appeared in 37 matches for the New Jersey club before being traded to Portland during the 2015 NCAA draft.
Johnson spent much of her career as a Thorn coming off the bench or as a spot defensive starter. Her longest sustained appearance consisted of a six-week stint in the starting XI between May 30 and July 11, 2015. From April 2016 to October 2017, however, her official record shows her on-field for a total of only 10 minutes over four matches.
Johnson joins another ex-Thorn, McKenzie Berryhill, on the waiver wire.
Berryhill, released by Orlando, was included in the group that also contains Jocelyn Blankenship and Jordan O’Brien released by the Pride; Kelly Conheeney, released by the Houston Dash; Line Sigvardsen Jensen, released by the Washington Spirit; Natasha Kai, released by Sky Blue FC; and Stephanie Ochs, released by the North Carolina Courage.
