Date: Feb. 7, 2015
Time: 5:00 PM
Location: Santa Clara, Calif.
Venue: Leavey Center
Video: TheW.tv
Radio: Sports 910 (KMTT)
POR vs. SCU Series
Overall Series: 32-58
Home: 21-22
Road: 9-32
Neutral: 2-4
Last 5/10: 2-3/6-4
Last: POR 78, SCU 61 (1/8/15 at Portland)
THIS WEEK
• Portland looks for a Bay Area road sweep when the Pilots take on the Santa Clara Broncos Saturday at 5 p.m.
• The game will be aired live on TheW.tv with JB Long and Dan Belluomini calling the action.
• All Portland basketball games will be aired live on Sports 910 (KMTT) with pregame coverage beginning 30 minutes prior to tip-off. Bill Johnson will call the play-by-play all season long.
• Pilot fans are encouraged to attend watch parties for all Portland road games at Buffalo Wild Wings-Lloyd District.
ABOUT SANTA CLARA
• The Broncos (11-13, 5-7 WCC) led No. 2 Gonzaga at the half before falling by a 77-63 margin Thursday night.
• Santa Clara is tied for fifth in the WCC standings with San Diego, half a game ahead of the Pilots.
• Senior G Brandon Clark averages a team-best 15.8 points, while sophomore G Jared Brownridge - the reigning WCC Newcomer of the Year - adds 14.8 points.
• Head coach Kerry Keating is in his eighth season at the helm of the Broncos and posts a 125-133 overall record. He guided Santa Clara to the 2011 CIT Championship and 2013 CBI title.
• Portland defeated Santa Clara by a 78-61 margin at the Chiles Center on Jan. 8... the team's split last year's series with each team picking up road wins... The Broncos took a 76-68 decision in Portland, while the Pilots won 76-64 at Santa Clara.
Obviously this is a huge game in terms of seeding. A win and a season sweep gives us the tiebreaker over SCU--which could be huge...

Re: Pilots @ SCU, 5pm tip
We're hoping for as many as 60 Pilots fans at the game today....not enough to take over the Leavey Center, but enough to be heard.
If there are any Bay Area lurkers reading this, come on out and support your Pilots.....as Nut suggested, this could turn out to be a huge game for the team.

Re: Pilots @ SCU, 5pm tip
Pilots two-point favorites according to Vegas....SCU one-point favorites according to Kenpom.
With LMU down double digits to BYU right now and USD with a difficult road game at Pepperdine tonight, this is a huge opportunity for the Pilots to make a bit of a move up the standings.

Re: Pilots @ SCU, 5pm tip
My goodness... what a half! And Bailey with the looong buzzer beater to push the lead back to 16 at the half; that was a much needed hoop as SCU was trying to creep back in it.
We still have waaaaay too many turnovers (10), but shooting 7-7 from 3 and out rebounding the Broncos 18-7 helps that!
SCU looks really bad, too.

"It was a clinic by Portland" - announcers at the end of TheW.tv broadcast. Great to hear.
What a road trip for the Pilots. Lots of work left to do this year, but so nice to see this team get it done - and in convincing fashion!

Re: Pilots @ SCU, 5pm tip
It was good to see the team take the game back after SCU cut the lead to 9, and we pushed the lead back to 20.
SCU should get some recognition here--they really made the Pilots ineffective on offense for much of the 2nd half; fortunately the Broncos were cold as ice. Good to see us figure it out and win convincingly down the stretch.
Turnovers were still an issue, but we dominated the boards 34-21.

Re: Pilots @ SCU, 5pm tip
Kevin played 38 minutes, Thomas played 36, and Bryce played 32. Jason Todd played 28 minutes off the bench and made all his shots. Not much other help off the bench, although Phillip had a nice dunk. Bobby played 9 minutes, missed the only shot he took. D'Marques had a difficult couple minutes.

Re: Pilots @ SCU, 5pm tip
On the pre-game interview with Bill Johnson, Rev said it wouldn't help for him to tell Thomas to "make your layups". He said Thomas knows very well he needs to make those shot, so he tells him to get rebounds, defend well, etc. Must have worked, Thomas was 7 of 8 tonight.
Why I don't coach; I'd be yelling "make those layups" with my neck veins throbbing.

Pilots Complete Road Sweep with Win over Santa Clara
On the Web: http://portlandpilots.com/news/2015/2/7/MBB_0207153018.aspx
SANTA CLARA, Calif. – Thomas van der Mars recorded a double-double and set the Portland record for career blocked shots in a 74-54 victory over the Santa Clara Broncos in West Coast Conference men’s basketball action Saturday night at the Leavey Center. The victory gave the Pilots a season sweep of Santa Clara and crucial road sweep after knocking off San Francisco on Thursday night.
Van der Mars finished with 16 points and 12 rebounds after going 7-of-8 from the field. Last season, he went 9-for-10 from the field in recording a career-high 28 points at the Leavey Center. He added to his growing list of accolades by tying the school record for blocked shots in the first half and then breaking it midway through the second period. He now has 104 career blocked shots.
It was a balanced effort for the Pilots (14-10, 5-7 WCC) as senior guard Kevin Bailey and junior guard Bryce Pressley also finished with 16 points each.
Pressley sparked the Pilots early with four first half three pointers as the team finished 7-for-7 from beyond the arch in the first period. Bailey capped the half with a 30-footer at the buzzer to give the Pilots a 42-26 lead.
Portland led by as much as 20 points in the first half and 18 early in the second, but the Broncos (11-14, 5-8 ) cut the deficit to 55-46 on a Jared Brownridge three-pointer. The Pilots held Santa Clara without a field for the next five-and-a-half minutes and never looked back.
Senior guard Brandon Clark scored a game-high 18 points, while Brownridge added 10.
Portland shot 75 percent from the field in the first half (15-for-20) and a season-high 62 percent for the game. Santa Clara was held to 36 percent overall. The Pilots also used their size advantage to garner a 34-21 rebounding margin
Portland will look to extend its win streak when it returns to the Chiles Center next week. The Pilots will host Pepperdine on Thursday at 7 p.m. on TheW.tv and then Loyola Marymount on Saturday at 7 p.m. on ROOT Sports NW. Radio coverage for all Pilot games begins 30 minutes before tip-off on Sports 910 (KMTT).

How much recognition are you supposed to give a team that lets you shoot 62%?
So, you mean we really made them ineffective for much of the second half as well?
They didn't score a field goal for 5 1/2 minutes.
Since we shot 50% in the second stanza they couldn't have been all that effective. Our holding them to 36% for the night and 34% in the second might indicate we played lots better defense than they.
Even our free throw defense was pretty good tonight.

Re: Pilots @ SCU, 5pm tip
I was referring to SCU in the first 7 or 8 minutes of the second half... we could not get the ball inside, got in some foul trouble, and had to settle for low-percentage shots and turned it over. Compared to the first half, SCU came out with some defensive intensity to get back into the game momentarily (after being blown out of their own gym for the other 75% of the game), but the Pilots were able to right the ship... props to SCU for battling back, and good on us for recovering and putting the game away (and not letting it be a close game at the end).
And yes, we were playing solid D all night... it was nice to see shots falling this weekend after many games where they weren't. It was also good to see Gabe Taylor getting minutes after being ill.

Re: Pilots @ SCU, 5pm tip
Obviously all games from here on out are big... but we play 4 of the last 6 at home, so that is good. If we can pull out 2 wins at home next weekend, we're starting to look good for 5th or 6th place.
