From the NyT.

The College Football Playoff selection committee revealed its first four-team bracket on Sunday, seeding Alabama No. 1, Oregon No. 2, Florida State No. 3 and Ohio State No. 4. The two most deserving teams left out were Baylor and Texas Christian.
Under the Football Bowl Subdivision’s new playoff system, the top-seeded team is placed in the semifinal bowl where it has more of a home-field advantage. So Alabama will play Ohio State in the Sugar Bowl, and Oregon will play Florida State in the Rose Bowl. Both of those games are on Jan. 1. The winners will play for the national title on Jan. 12 at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Tex.

The Big 12 snubbed, because they don't play a 13th game in a championship. They need 2 more teams to stage a championship. Will BYU get the call?

Before BYU does go, the WCC should get the media rights like the ACC did. Very Happy

My liver and wallet would probably enjoy not having the Sunday break in Vegas...

So if they go, what is the WCC's move? Stick with 9? Look at Denver or Seattle again?

I dunno. Some of the movers and shakers that fueled the expansion ( Janinovich, Beauchamp, Williams, et al) aren't here anymore.

So they selected four conference champs. Never would have guessed that.

As it should be, to determine the national champ. Some are already calling for a 8 team play-off. This year that would include the snubbed Big-12 schools, plus Miss. St. and Mich. St., two teams that didn't win their divisions, let alone their conferences. Some years, there may not be 4 quality conference champs, if there are upsets in the CCGs. Having 6 worthy teams that were conference champs or co-champs is an anomaly. Last year, Stanford was Pac-12 champ with 2 losses.

Agree with all this. And with 5 power conferences and four spots, there will be enough uproar one way or another to cause an expansion to 8.

I don't think so. There will be no interest in diluting the money.

In college football anyway.  One of our two national championships came when we failed to win the conference.

Aren't bowl proceeds shared within conference? Moving to 8 would bring in all the P5, but then you're talking about revenue from 2 more games over the current format. Not sure what the net change in conference payout would be from all this. Then there is the issue with keeping the pesky G5 excluded.

No. You might be confused by what the WCC does with March madness money.

Most bcs conferences say the bowl team keeps the money.

And the bowls bid for the right to be one of the championship presenters.

Do you have a link for this? Everything I've read says "most" conferences divide the money.

"Keep in mind that all of this money goes to the conference, not to the team playing in the game. Most conferences split it equally between all 12-14 teams with an equal share also going to the conference office (although some give a bonus to the team participating in the game)."

And then there were two!

Old School.....Big 10 vs. Pac 12 in the very first NCAA FBS Football Championship....and it's the same two teams that met in the very first NCAA Basketball Championship game in 1939.....Ohio St. vs. Oregon.

The only the thing that could make it better is if the game were played in the Rose Bowl, but the Jan 12th game in Arlington could be one for the ages.   Cool

Interesting to note that if the old BCS system was still in place, neither Oregon nor Ohio St. would of played for the championship.  It would have been Alabama and Florida St.

In the Cotton Bowl post-game press conference, a reporter mentioned to Urban Meyer that Oregon won by 40.  "Oregon won by 40? I gotta go. We've gotta go get ready for that one."  Laughing

There is a pretty liberal interpretation of " expenses paid".

Not like the expenses paid to convention goers to the teacher's union.

Yeah, but it would appear the teachers have no where near the expenses that football players have.

Here are sample " expense " payouts for one conference (SEC).

SEC

$50 million base to the conference

$6 million to the conference for Alabama (Sugar Bowl – CFP semifinal)

$4 million to the conference for Ole Miss (Peach Bowl)

$27.5 million to the conference for Mississippi State (Orange Bowl)

Total: $87.5 million to the conference

Conference distribution model: For bowl games with receipts of $4,000,000 - $5,999,999, the participating team retains $1.475 million (Ole Miss), plus a travel allowance determined by SEC. For bowl games with receipts of $6 million or more, the participating team receives $2 million (Alabama and Mississippi State), plus a travel allowance determined by the SEC. If an SEC team makes it to the championship game, it receives another $2.1 million, plus travel allowance. The remainder of the revenue from these bowls is divided 15 ways – one share for each of the 14 SEC teams and one share for the conference office. There’s also a distribution method for bowls with lower payouts, but I’m not covering that here.

So if an SEC team made the semi's and Finals of the National championships , that's four million in expenses for two games, plus their conference share.

Note that the four Million does not include what it actually costs to get the teams, coaches, and retainers TO the games. That is paid by the conference.

So this last round of bowls paid three SEC teams 5.475 Million for incidentals besides travel and board.

For comparison, the EADA database shows the expenses for UP's entire athletic department at around 5.6 million for all men's programs and 5.7 million for all women's, including travel.
